- Before and now: the labour situation of clients in a therapeutic communityPublication . Henriques, Susana; Candeias, PedroThis article aims to identify changes in the work situation among problematic drug users (PDU) clients of an international therapeutic community located in Portugal, after the completion of treatment. In this article, we analyse these changes on the assumption that entry to the labour market is essential for effective social reintegration. To achieve our aim, we carried out a pilot study with an analysis of the administrative records of a therapeutic community and then held telephone interviews with 63 former clients. Different work-related factors were compared, with special attention being paid to the changes registered. We concluded that, after reatment, although there was greater instability, educational qualifications and the number of PDU employees with an occupation increased. There was a decrease in factory workers and an increase in administrative functions. First jobs were obtained via a more formal channel, while the most recent ones were obtained on own initiative. This leads to the conclusion that after an initial period of greater difficulties the PDU participants in this study manage to gain higher autonomy and better integration into the labour market.
- Collaborative management in schools: experiences on the role of ibero-american networks in health educationPublication . Reis Bomfim, Natanael; Correia, Silvia Letícia Costa Pereira; Henriques, Susana; Rodrigues, ElisabeteHealth education is complex and, in schools, involves not only specific teams, but also management, organizational climate, and curricula. In this context, we understand collaborative management as a model in which school leaders promote the involvement of the school community, are based on open communication processes, and are receptive to innovation. Networking, enhanced by digital technologies, is one of the resources of these collaborative practices in the management of schools that, at the same time, reinforce them. Following a methodological strategy of an exploratory and qualitative nature, we analyze in a comparative perspective the public policies that frame health education in schools. The focus is on two experiences carried out in a network, in Brazil and Portugal. The results allow us to (re)think health education strategies in the school context, based on collaborative management strategies and cooperation networks.

Henriques, Susana; Molero, Juan Carlos
- Letter to the editor: virtual community of researchers and prevention experts: approximating drug research and practice fieldsPublication . Henriques, Susana; Van Hout, Marie Claire; Teixeira, AntónioThis paper presents the key findings of a virtual community of addiction experts set up to share evidence- based programmes of prevention on novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use in Portugal. Using a theoretical framework that combines contributions from a virtual community of practice and learning in a virtual environment, with prevention science, this paper traces how members interact in order to improve their prevention intervention domains and approaches, and consider the political and practical implications.
The young Europeans of the third millennium are the inheritors of a society that is defined in terms of consumption and opulence. These are young people who have been born into a society of well-being in which leisure and entertainment have assumed a hegemonic position among the various criteria that govern contemporary social structure. But leisure has also been assimilated by the market and is defined by consumption-related criteria that have given rise to an active, well-established and growing recreational industry, which is playing an active role in the creation of lifestyle criteria. More than almost any other social group, young people have truly made leisure spaces their own. The preferred time for engaging in these recreational/fun (and consumer) practises is the evening/night. Against this background this research project looks at the association between ecstasy (and other synthetic drugs), certain types of music (house, for example), the rave circuit, a young lifestyle and a particular view of the world. - Supporting emergency remote teaching due to Coronavirus pandemic: problem solving group at ICUDDRPublication . Henriques, Susana; Eyles, Cary HopkinsBACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for all and has had a particular effect on university-level educators. Although the use of technologies in education is recognized as critical in developing transversal skills and preparing students for the needs of modern society, the COVID-19 pandemic crisis stressed the relevance of the digital medium. At the same time, the emergency hastened significant changes to universities’ main roles – teaching, learning, and evaluation. AIMS: In this article, we present research conducted by a Problem-Solving Group, a virtual community of practice formed by the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) to support educators in addressing the challenges of the pandemic crisis. METHODS: Based on a problem-solving methodology, the virtual community of practice Problem-Solving Group) provided synchronous group sessions and asynchronous individual support. The resulting analysis and discussion are based on the problemsolving methodology. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two educators, including two facilitators, attended six virtual problem-solving sessions between September and December 2020. RESULTS: Participants were committed educators who shared their experiences, challenges, and best practices. The problem-solving methodology was effective in identifying critical areas in remote emergency university-level teaching. CONCLUSIONS: The results stress the importance of creating a common space where educators with similar problems and difficulties can share ideas, experiences, and best practices. The virtual community of practice was effective, although it requires more extensive development and research.
- The first university e-learning study programme based on the adaption of the EUPC: Portuguese implementation studyPublication . Henriques, Susana; Burkhart, Gregor; Miovsky, MichalBACKGROUND: The training curriculum has been developed by a European project (UPC-Adapt) cofunded by the European Commission. Eleven partners adapted the Universal Prevention Curriculum to suit the European context. AIMS: The aims of the implementation study were to adapt the EUPC into a standardised university course delivered by distance learning by Universidade Aberta (UAb) and develop a process evaluation study focused on this adaptation process. METHODS: The methodology was inspired by the WHO guidelines for the evaluation of prevention and treatment programmes and combined with qualitative research strategies and methods (observation and qualitative content analysis). PARTICIPANTS: It features distance learning, without geographical borders or physical barriers, which is particularly important for prevention professionals working in the far-flung Portuguese-speaking environment. RESULTS: Enrolment has been difficult, probably for three reasons: i) people tend to believe that they know everything about prevention, ii) the prevention of substance use might be too narrow a field, and iii) there is no perceived need for a specific qualification in order to do prevention work in Portugal. CONCLUSIONS: EMCDDA staff with proficiency in Portuguese had access to the training course and followed the development of the e-activities and the interaction within the virtual community as part of the evaluation protocol. The course represents the first real e-learning-based university adaptation running in a standard regime in Europe, and UAb (Portugal) has joined Charles University (Prague) in making effective use of programmes and materials based on the original UPC curricula in the university context.
- A virtual ‘experiential expert’ communities of practice in sharing evidence based prevention of novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use: the portuguese experiencePublication . Henriques, Susana; Van Hout, Marie Claire; Teixeira, AntónioWe present findings from a unique virtual community of practice piloted to support a programme of prevention evidence and knowledge sharing among professional prevention practitioners as ‘experiential experts’ around tackling novel psychoactive substances (NPS) use in Portugal. A mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative analysis of interactions and qualitative content analysis of debates about NPS, NPS users, patterns of use and best practices in prevention of this type of drug use was conducted. Results show low and irregular interactions between members of this virtual community, but very rich discussions around sharing of experiences and problematizing practices. We discuss the layers of interaction between members, and the shared learning around policy and practice implications. Such virtual and collaborative work practices are not yet integrated within the drug prevention field where instead individualistic approaches tend to prevail and preclude the sharing of alternative solutions that shape different experiences. Our virtual community of NPS prevention experts provides a flagship for ongoing collaboration between research, generation of evidence informing policy and practice, professional training, support and shared learning. It underscores the need for an innovative and multi-disciplinary approach to sharing perspectives in tackling emerging and harmful drug trends.
