- Entrepreneurship in different contexts in cultural and creative industriesPublication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Mónico, Lisete S.This study analyzes howhard and soft conditions influence the development of entrepreneurship in cultural and creative industries (CCIs). The study further examines what influence the context has on the effect of these conditions. A multiplemultivariate regression analysis examines the importance of both the hard and soft conditions to explain the differences between the United Kingdom and the Mediterranean countries of Portugal, Spain, and Greece. The sample comprises 123 entrepreneurs from the four countries. The use of this method represents an important contribution to the understanding of entrepreneurship dynamics and for the further fine-tuning of entrepreneurship policies in CCIs in different contexts.
- Exploring migrant entrepreneurship and innovation in ultraperipheral regions: an investigation on opportunity and necessity-driven entrepreneurshipPublication . Porfírio, José; Felício, J. Augusto; Rodrigues, Ricardo; Carrilho, TiagoMigrant entrepreneurship involves the indigenous population and migrant communities, exerting a profound influence on the host country or region. This phenomenon is particularly relevant in ultraperipheral areas, as in this research exemplified by the Autonomous Region of Madeira (Madeira), which recently wit nessed an intensification of migrant inflow, many originating from countries with a deep historical connection to the region. This research characterizes the entrepreneurial migrant community to discern factors that may contribute to formulating and enhancing political-social policies to foster entrepreneurship success, broadly relevant to generating wealth but of particular importance in facilitating migrants’ integration. The analysis focuses on understanding the motivations that drive entrepreneurial initiatives among migrants, recognizing the predominance of necessity-driven entrepreneurs, and that migrant entrepreneurs often take advantage of historical and familial ties to the region to overcome the obstacles specific to migrants.
- Factors affecting digital transformation in bankingPublication . Porfírio, José; Felício, J. Augusto; Carrilho, TiagoThis study analyzes the perceived impacts of Digital Transformation (DT) in the banking industry, identifying the factors that most affect banking performance and business volume. Based on the opinion of some board members and the perceptions of 50 bank employees, ground theory is used and fsQCA is applied to identify the factors and configurations between Employees, Internal, and External factors that influence the impact of DT on the performance of Portuguese banks. Research is developed at a micro level putting in evidence the holistic comprehension of the DT process and concluding on the importance of flexibility and management capacity to potentiate the impact of DT in banking, highlighting the crucial importance of the employees’ skills and stakeholders’ digital experience to bypass drawbacks to its potential and contributing to improve management and human resource policies to address DT in the banking industry.
- Family business succession in different national contexts: a fuzzy-set QCA approachPublication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Hassid, Joseph; Rodrigues, RicardoFamily business succession is a key topic that has attracted considerable attention from researchers, especially in the last decade. Most research, however, is based on case studies with limited applicability and fails to present comparisons across international contexts that highlight di erences in succession processes. We apply expectation states theory to analyze a sample of 128 observations in two Southern European countries, Portugal and Greece. We study configurations of successors’ characteristics, family business characteristics, the existence (or absence) of a succession plan, and successors’ motivation to succeed. Our aim is to reveal how these issues a ect successors’ perceptions of preparation for succession using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Family businesses are a dominant organizational form all over the world, and succession issues are critical for the sustainability of family businesses. Our findings suggest that di erent configurations of conditions influence successors’ perceptions of preparation for family business succession. Moreover, we verify the influence of cultural di erences on these processes. This research helps fill a gap in the literature, showing the role of a set of characteristics in successors’ perceptions of preparation for family business succession. Our conclusions provide insight into the types of policies that can promote successful family business succession.

- Fostering entrepreneurship intentions: the role of entrepreneurship educationPublication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Jardim, Jacinto; Wittberg, VolkerTo foster economic development, entrepreneurship is a crucial pillar. Young people and especially students are potential entrepreneurs, whereas education is crucial to promote capabilities and to pursue intentions. In this research we study the importance and effect of the personal characteristics of students, the inherent psychological factors, and the influence of education and training to promote entrepreneurial intentions. From our sample of 1750 students, we conclude about the importance of entrepreneurial education to promote entrepreneurial spirit and develop entrepreneurial intentions. Our results highlight the importance of proposing entrepreneurship education, especially to younger girls in regular education but also to older boys in vocational education. In this sense, this research closes a gap in literature by demonstrating that entrepreneurial education is an important aspect to promote entrepreneurial intentions, despite some inherent adverse psychological conditions on these younger students for entrepreneurship development.
- From entrepreneurship potential in culture and creative industries to economic development: the situation of UK and southern European countriesPublication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Felício, José AugustoThis research proposes a model to evaluate the way entrepreneurship potential (EP) defined by environmental factors (EF) and psychological factors (PF) influence entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) results in Culture and Creative Industries (CCIs), and analyzes how country cultural contexts may influence these patterns, comparing the situation in UK and EU Med countries (Portugal, Spain and Greece). Fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) applied to a sample of 123 CCIs from these countries, provides the results for the global model and for the two sub-sets of countries considered (UK and EU Med countries). Confirmation of proposed patterns of entrepreneurship potential that influence entrepreneurial self-efficacy, improves previous theoretical research on this field, allows a systemic assessment of entrepreneurs’ outlook, and paves the way for complimentary oriented quantitative research for a better conception of entrepreneurship’s public policies, as well as the definition of different support programs to promote the development of ESE in CCIs.
- Leadership characteristics and digital transformationPublication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Felício, José Augusto; Jardim, JacintoDigital transformation (DT) is essential for all companies and industries, depending crucially on systems, IT, strategy, and people. In this research, we analyse how firms’ characteristics, associated with management characteristics, promote DT in Portuguese companies. The model considers the relationship between digital strategy and corporate and business strategy, according to firm and management characteristics. We use a multilevel analysis, applying fsQCA to data obtained from 47 Portuguese firms. The results represent an important step forward in the knowledge of the conditions to promote higher stages of DT, especially regarding leadership and management associated with certain firms’ characteristics. The conclusions support the crucial role of leadership and especially the importance of managers’ coherence towards companies’ mission to promote more advanced stages of DT. At the same time, it contributes to develop knowledge about the best possible combination of firms’ and management characteristics to promote DT.
- Organizational purpose and employee motivation: an fsQCA analysisPublication . Porfírio, José; Rodrigues, Ricardo; Magalhães, Filipa; Carrilho, TiagoPurpose – Organizational Purpose (OP) has become increasingly important in the organizational context. This research focuses on how OP can contribute to employee motivation, using personal and institutional OP factors and considering the importance of employee motivation toward organizational success. Design/methodology/approach – To conduct the research, we selected a branch of a leading multinational company in the chemical sector. Based on data collected through a questionnaire sent out to employees and using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we identified combinations of individual and institutional OP factors leading to high (or low) employee motivation. Findings – The results reveal that individual and institutional OP factors synergistically promote high employee motivation. The employees’ contribution to the OP and the integrity of the organization’s leadership are two key motivating factors. Practical implications – Organizations struggle to develop sustainable competitive advantages in an ever competitive environment. Focusing on the “why” instead of the “how” may help organizations differentiate and achieve higher employee motivation. This research clarifies how to turn purpose into an asset to improve employee motivation. Originality/value – The conclusions highlight the need to share the OP through leadership actions and the importance of helping workers recognize the OP and its values, integrate them into their actions and feel how they contribute to its achievement.
- Promoting entrepreneurial intentions from adolescence: the influence of entrepreneurial culture and educationPublication . Porfírio, Jose; Felício, J. Augusto; Carrilho, Tiago; Jardim, JacintoFrom a young age, entrepreneurship intentions depend heavily on the culture of countries and the entrepre neurial contexts that will shape entrepreneurial archetypes about what defines an entrepreneur, and the influ ence of role models. All these aspects depend on the would-be entrepreneurs’ personal characteristics, and are influenced by the entrepreneurship education they receive when they are young. Most of the studies on youth entrepreneurship focus on university students. However, it is in adolescence that the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs are formed. This may be the reason why these studies mostly reach contradictory results about the importance of these programs. From our sample of 1750 Portuguese students, we confirm the importance of entrepreneurial culture and education to promote entrepreneurial self-efficacy and develop entrepreneurial intentions. Our results contribute to ascertaining the importance of entrepreneurial educational programs delivered in adolescence, adapted to the specific characteristics of the target populations (potential entrepreneurs) on the development of entrepreneurship intentions. Thus, it helps with the subsequent definition of educational policies to foster entrepreneurship development from adolescence.
