  • Fostering entrepreneurship intentions: the role of entrepreneurship education
Publication . Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago; Jardim, Jacinto; Wittberg, Volker
To foster economic development, entrepreneurship is a crucial pillar. Young people and especially students are potential entrepreneurs, whereas education is crucial to promote capabilities and to pursue intentions. In this research we study the importance and effect of the personal characteristics of students, the inherent psychological factors, and the influence of education and training to promote entrepreneurial intentions. From our sample of 1750 students, we conclude about the importance of entrepreneurial education to promote entrepreneurial spirit and develop entrepreneurial intentions. Our results highlight the importance of proposing entrepreneurship education, especially to younger girls in regular education but also to older boys in vocational education. In this sense, this research closes a gap in literature by demonstrating that entrepreneurial education is an important aspect to promote entrepreneurial intentions, despite some inherent adverse psychological conditions on these younger students for entrepreneurship development.
  • The new EU nutrition labelling : barriers and opportunities that food business operators perceived in their business practices and for consumers food purchases
Publication . Carrilho, Tiago; Moura, Ana Pinto de; Cunha, Luís Miguel
Although consumers express a growing expectation in finding clear, credible and easy to understand label, presented in food products, studies confirm that European consumers have difficulties in understanding and use nutritional labelling in the format currently existing in the European Union. To overcome this situation, the European Union issued a new food information regulation on the provision of information on food consumers to be in force from 13 December 2014. The proposal took into account the need to simplify and consolidate the plethora of legal acts on labelling, to accommodate what consumers have shown to need, as well as improving nutrition information in order to help them make informed and healthier choices. The aim of this study was to understand in depth the largest Portuguese manufactures and retailers’ nutrition labelling practices in the light of the acceptance of the new food information regulation. A qualitative study has been developed and an interview guide was designed through food business operators, taking into account barriers and opportunities for food business operators and consumers face the new nutrition labels. Although the majority of the ten respondents had a positive opinion on a unique regulation, they also addressed the minimum character size, that acts as a barrier to marketing actions, because with this limitation they do not have space to provide voluntary information on the: product (e.g. claims, “kosher”), production method (e.g. organic), package (e.g. PET recycling), and corporate social commitments. Industry operators also worry about the obligation of the country of origin labelling inclusion. Most participants identify a number of benefits for the consumer like: allergen communication in non-pre-packed food, improved clarity of labels, mandatory nutrition declaration and, the harmonisation of rules. However, food operators considered the presence of confusing information, like changes in nutrition declaration (e.g. replacement of “sodium” to “salt”) and origin labelling in processed foods.

  • Conditions for entrepreneurship development in creative industries in Portugal
Publication . Carrilho, Tiago; Porfírio, José
Creative Industries are at the core of the development of modern societies, fuelling innovation and promoting the development of new business models. However, the adequate conditions for the development of Creative Industries is not usually spontaneous, and must be developed. At the same time, likewise other types of entrepreneurs, creative entrepreneurs present some idiosyncratic characteristics that make them “special”. In the present paper we present the preliminary results for Portugal, of a large study conducted among creative entrepreneurs in some Southern European countries and in the UK, under an EU project. The principal objective of this paper is to present the conditions that established creative entrepreneurs in Portugal consider vital for their establishment and the inherent development of their businesses. We conclude that the development of creative entrepreneurship has implicit specific characteristics that differentiate it from the overall entrepreneurship picture, and that creative entrepreneurs, although present also some differences according to the different sectors of creative industries considered, are in themselves different from the general entrepreneurs. This may have consequences at the level of public policies’ conception and implementation that must be considered by the countries that want to promote entrepreneurship in creative industries.
  • Business intelligence standardization and corporate strategy : a paradox
Publication . Jacquinet, Marc; Porfírio, José; Carrilho, Tiago
Market evidence suggests the increased investment of companies in BI systems to feed their strategy processes. The change in the strategy fundamentals increases substantially the value of information for both strategies’ implementation and control. One domain neglected is the use of BI systems for strategy conception. And this is something increasingly important in today’s constantly changing world of business, where new information in a knowledge economy is usually synonymous of more added value and competitiveness. However, together with this tendency, we experience a general trend for BI systems standardization, a dominant movement for BI solutions providers to standardize processes in order to take advantage of learning curves and processes, and economies of scale and scope. Considering that each strategy should be unique, and departing from the principle that BI systems are closely related with corporate strategy, it seems that there is a double paradox in BI markets that companies should solve as soon as possible, in order to take the most out of the momentum of BI markets.
  • Promoting entrepreneurship in cultural and creative industries in Europe: creative industries entrepreneur’s network : the CINet project
Publication . Porfírio, José; Hassid, Joseph; Carrilho, Tiago
CINet, the Creative Industries Network of Entrepreneurs was a project inspired in the unique ecology of Nottingham’s creative industry sector. The project was funded by the European Commission under Leonardo da Vinci Transfer of Innovation Program (cinet.eu.uab.pt) CINet brings together creative industry clusters in Nottingham, Greece, Portugal and Spain. Its aim was to facilitate shared learning amongst entrepreneurs and to promote entrepreneurship in the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) by developing the conditions for learning and collaborative advantage within small firm clusters. CINet Partners came from several southern European countries (Portugal, Spain, Greece and France), the UK and Romania. They were: • Universidade Aberta, Lisbon (Portugal) – Project Coordinator • UK WON (UK Work Organisation Network) • Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Barcelona (Spain) • University of Piraeus Research Centre-UPRC, Athens (Greece) • Association for Education and Sustainable Development (Romania) • DNA, Cascais (Portugal) • Media Deals Association (France) CINet developed an acceleration program that was offered through three main modalities: full eLearning; blended-learning and full face-to-face training. This permitted to test the different conditions and respective advantages and drawbacks of training entrepreneurs. The outcomes of the project allowed the creation of a network of creative entrepreneurs between the three Southern European Countries involved; an improvement of knowledge concerning important differences deriving from the different type of entrepreneurship training delivery, and also the need to consider different cultural conditions when defining public policies and actions concerning entrepreneurship development in CCIs.
