- Conditions for entrepreneurship development in creative industries in PortugalPublication . Carrilho, Tiago; Porfírio, JoséCreative Industries are at the core of the development of modern societies, fuelling innovation and promoting the development of new business models. However, the adequate conditions for the development of Creative Industries is not usually spontaneous, and must be developed. At the same time, likewise other types of entrepreneurs, creative entrepreneurs present some idiosyncratic characteristics that make them “special”. In the present paper we present the preliminary results for Portugal, of a large study conducted among creative entrepreneurs in some Southern European countries and in the UK, under an EU project. The principal objective of this paper is to present the conditions that established creative entrepreneurs in Portugal consider vital for their establishment and the inherent development of their businesses. We conclude that the development of creative entrepreneurship has implicit specific characteristics that differentiate it from the overall entrepreneurship picture, and that creative entrepreneurs, although present also some differences according to the different sectors of creative industries considered, are in themselves different from the general entrepreneurs. This may have consequences at the level of public policies’ conception and implementation that must be considered by the countries that want to promote entrepreneurship in creative industries.

- Artefacto Presense: do ciclo criativo à experiência transdisciplinarPublication .
- What Are Your Strengths?Publication . Sousa, Ivo Dias deStrengthsFinder 2.0 is a little book around strengths-based psychology with an important message: “Each person has greater potential for success in specific areas, and the key to human development is building on who we already are”. If we unpack this idea a bit what it means is that us, as humans, should invest in developing our talents instead of trying to fix our weaknesses. With such an approach the ratio benefit/effort will be much bigger, which means that you will benefit immensely with a smaller amount of effort. The author of the book is Tom Rath, an American author and researcher. His books have sold several million copies and have been translated into more then fifteen languages. Two of his most well-known books are “How Full Is Your Bucket?” And “Eat Move Sleep: How Small Choices Lead to Big Changes”. He is a scientist at Gallup and lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. According to the author, since we are children society around us preach a misguided maxim: “You can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enough”. This mantra is so entrenched in our “hard working” culture that it leads us to follow the path of most resistance in our professional lives. Tom Rath believes that in reality we can accomplish a lot more if we focus on our talents. The path of less resistance could be achieved by : “You cannot be anything you want to be – but you can be a lot more of who you already are”.

- Stochastic response surface methodology: a study in the human health areaPublication . Oliveira, Teresa; Leal, Maria da Conceição Dias; Oliveira, AmilcarIn this paper we review Stochastic Response Surface Methodology as a tool for modeling uncertainty in the context of Risk Analysis. An application in the survival analysis in the breast cancer context is implemented with R software.
- Distribution function for the ratio of two normal random variablesPublication . Oliveira, Amilcar; Oliveira, Teresa; Seijas-Macias, J. AntonioThe distribution of the ratio of two normal random variables X and Y was studied from [1] (the density function) and [2] (the distribution function). The shape of its density function can be unimodal, bimodal, symmetric, asymmetric, following several type of distributions, like Dirac Distribution, Normal Distribution, Cauchy Distribution or Recinormal Distribution. In this paper we study a different approximation for this distribution Z = X /Y , as a function of four parameters: ratio of the means of the two normal variables, ratio of the standard deviations of the two normal variables, the variation coefficient of the normal variable Y , and the correlation between the two variables. A formula for the Distribution function and the density function of Z is given. In addition, using graphical procedures we established singularity points for the parameters where the approximation given for Z has a non normal shape.
- Acquisition of competencies in mathematics through gamesPublication . Ferreira, Maria Cristina; Pereira, José António; Oliveira, AmilcarThe objective of this paper is to present the fundamentals of game theory and illustrate how the theory can be applied in education of Mathematics.Literature specific applications of game theory across all levels of instructor-led education. With a game theory model, we provide a mathematical description of a social situation in which two or more individuals or players interact. We strongly suggestthat traditional teaching techniques of mathematics should be complemented with games.
