  • Online gamification devices as extensions of the educational printed book
Publication . Bidarra, José; Rocio, Vitor
In recent years there have been several commercial products designated as "augmented books". These use gamification and augmented reality technologies to provide the reader with more layers of information, thereby fostering the use of the book in new ways. So, in this article we describe part of the research and outcomes of the Portuguese project CHIC – C3, aimed at designing and developing a platform for managing the production of digital content connected with printed books. Furthermore, we developed a model for the gamification of digital content based on the printed book, mainly aimed at educational purposes. A proof of concept for the model was built in the form of a companion platform, supported by the Moodle LMS, fully integrated with the main CHIC website. Readers were able to access the platform, engage in several content related games, and interact with other readers.
  • Gamification badges and ratings: impact in a academic social network
Publication . Saraiva, Fernando; Morgado, Lina; Rocio, Vitor
The article describes the Impact of using Gamification Elements like Badges, Status Bar and a Rating System on the Interaction, Collaboration, Cooperation and the Presences of the Community of Inquiry Framework, inside an Academic Social Platform. We used a Design Base Research Methodology with Mixed Methods. We started by collecting opinions of users using semistructured interviews. The results from coding, informed on the construction of a gamified prototype, made with Elgg. Then Usability tests were conducted and the data helped refine the subsequent implementation. A Survey was deployed, Observations were made, and we gathered some Analytics. Results are presented congruent to the iterations and discussed. Some indications for the use of Badges and the implementation of Gamification are considered.

  • Using BPMN to identify indicators for teacher intervention in support of self-regulation and co-regulation of learning in asynchronous e-learning
Publication . Morais, Ceres Germanna Braga; Pedrosa, Daniela; Rocio, Vitor; Cravino, José; Morgado, Leonel
We used BPMN diagrams to identify indicators that can assist teachers in their intervention actions to support students’ self-regulation and co-regulation in an asynchronous e-learning context. The use of BPMN modeling, by making explicit the tasks and procedures implicit in the intervention of the e-learning teacher, also exposed which data were available for developing decision-support indicators, as well as the relevant moments for carrying out interventions. Such indicators can help e-learning teachers focus their interventions to support selfregulation and co-regulation of learning, as well as enabling the creation of live data dashboards to support decision-making for those interventions, thus this process can contribute to devise better instruments for teacher intervention in support of self-regulation and co-regulation of student learning.

  • Tecnologias de informação: provocações e contradições
Publication .
  • Task scheduling model for fog paradigm
Publication . Barros, Celestino Lopes de; Rocio, Vitor; Sousa, André; Paredes, Hugo
Task scheduling in fog paradigm is highly complex and in the literature, there are still few studies. In the cloud architecture, it is widely studied and in many researches, it is approached from the perspective of service providers. Trying to bring innovative contributions in these areas, in this paper, we propose a model to the context-aware task-scheduling problem for fog paradigm. In our proposal, different context parameters are normalized through Min-Max normalization; requisition priorities are defined through the application of the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) technique and scheduling is performed using Multi-Objective Non-Linear Programming Optimization (MONLIP) technique.
  • Searching a mixed corpus in the light of the new portuguese orthographic norm
Publication . Carvalho, Gracinda; Falé, Isabel; Matos, David Martins de; Rocio, Vitor
A mixed corpus of Portuguese is one in which texts of different origins produce different spelling variants for the same word. A new norm, which will bring together the written texts produced both in Portugal and Brazil, giving then a more uniform orthography, has been effective since 2009, but what happens in the perspective of search, to corpora created before the norm came into practice, or within the transition period? Is the information they contain outdated and worthless? Do they need to be converted to the new norm? In the present work we analyse these questions.
  • Social engagement and motivation in a MOOC on school libraries
Publication . Bastos, Glória; Cabral, Pedro Barbosa; Rocio, Vitor
This paper explores two editions of a MOOC delivered at Universidade Aberta’s “AULAbERTA” (Open Class) platform. This platform offers different kinds of open learning paths and concerning specifically the MOOC learning path it is relevant to understand if the pedagogical model and the strategy achieve the desired results: (i) to improve education and enlarge the access to knowledge; (ii) to deliver high quality open and online education in Portuguese. The methodology used was based on a cross analysis of learner activity statistics against certain characteristics of the participants’ profile like profession and motivations. Four categories of participants were identified and some aspects of their behaviours and engagement in the MOOC were examined, providing some insights concerning the level of participation and interaction. These elements can help us to understand some differences in the learning experiences connected with internal and external motivations and also how participants appreciate the online experience and course design.
