- Access to homebanking services a portuguese perspectivePublication . Negas, Mário Carrilho; Lopes, José; Bernardo, Maria do Rosário MatosHaving the information at our fingertips we can consider that we live in a digital age. In fact, images, sounds, videos and information in general are shared every minute all around the world by people connected to the Internet. We live with all the benefits, speed and efficiency that the Internet brings to us, but we must be aware of the inherent risks to data and equipment security. The future of the banking system is definitely dependent on the online services it can provide. Therefore, it is vital to know deeply all the types of cybercrimes that can affect this industry in order to defend those who use the banking online services. This research explores the theme computer security, specifically concerning the homebanking activity, so that (1) we can identify the risks involved in the use of this service and (2) understand if the users are aware of them.
- Agrarian migrant workers in times of Covid-19 pandemic: the cases of Spain and PortugalPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Bussotti, LucaThe research addresses the impact of the pandemic on rural migrant workers in two Southern European countries that are at the center of a restructured supply chains of fresh vegetables: Portugal and Spain, where a new political economy of agriculture emerged in the last decades. These two well-known countries for wine produce also olive, olive oils, almonds, tomatoes, oranges, grapes, and other fruits and vegetables. Traditionally, the workers were still in the 1990s mostly coming from local places. Now, immigrants from Sub-Saharan and Northern Africa and from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia are a large part of the agrarian labor force. The vulnerability, discrimination, and difficulties of livelihood of these migrants workers are common currency and, despite contradictory economic incentives, the pandemic has made matters worst, especially for women and individuals not speaking the local languages. After describing the historical evolution and differences of the agrarian sectors of the two countries for fresh fruits and vegetables, we discuss the impact of the pandemic with a focus on gender. Whereas the situation before the pandemic was precarious and slowly improving on some counts, namely the increase of worker organization, the current process is one of recess. The paper identifies questions neglected by the literature on the pandemic in rural areas, in particular the vulnerability of immigrant workers to hunger, austerity, gender divide and discrimination, health risks, heavy constrained work, deportation, joblessness, and the lack of policies to ease social and economic ills beyond the focus on temporary normalization and repression.
- The art of storytelling: analysis of digital advertising campaigns in the telecommunications sectorPublication . Amorim, Edgar; Santos, SaraIn recent years, the telecommunications sector in Portugal has experienced increasing competition and consumer demand for more personalised and affordable services. In response, major brands have adopted emotionally engaging and immersive storytelling in their digital advertising strategies, particularly during seasonal campaigns. This study explores how storytelling in audiovisual campaigns can influence consumer engagement and evoke positive emotions. Through a literature review and qualitative analysis of two video campaigns by Vodafone and NOS, this paper examines the role of narrative structures and emotional appeal in shaping brand perception. The campaigns on YouTube were analysed in terms of narrative content, emotional tone, and audience engagement. Vodafone’s campaign, focusing on disconnection from technology to foster family bonds, achieved strong viewer interaction and empathy through relatable themes and nostalgic visuals. NOS’s campaign centred on traditional Portuguese values and the emotional power of a holiday message, resonating with audiences through music, familial imagery, and themes of longing. Both campaigns highlighted the strategic use of storytelling to humanise brands and deepen emotional connections with consumers. Despite growing academic interest, literature on narrative advertising in the digital environment, specifically within the telecommunications sector, remains limited. This study contributes to bridging this gap, providing insight into how storytelling can be an effective branding tool in a saturated and competitive market.
- Artificial intelligence, big data, platform capitalism and public policy: an evolutionary perspectivePublication . Jacquinet, MarcThe present paper aims to discuss the change in political economy when considering the new context and complexity of social, environmental and economic issues today, and more recently all the debates around artificial intelligence, big data and platform capitalism. First, it is important that the reflection be situated in the new and latest phase of transformation of the capitalist system, either globally or locally. Second, the convergence between artificial intelligence, big data, computer science and platforms is not fortuitous and there is more than buzzwords, but new real economic processes emerging. Third, the evolutionary perspective adopted here is based on complexity theory and the recent developments in the study of innovation, technological change and institutions, from a rather heterodox view mixed with economic history. Fourth, the historical dimension of change and the need to adopt a long view of historical processes, namely because of uncertainty, ignorance and constraints on economic agents. Finally, the problem of framing political issues and measures is tackled and is related to the level of complexity of what is at stake with the digital transformation of capitalist economies and different types of democratic societies.
- A avaliação do desempenho enquanto ferramenta motivacional no setor público portuguêsPublication .
- Between emotion and rejection: the consumer in the age of controversyPublication . Carvalho, Beatriz; Simões, Jaqueline; Silva, Marcelo; Pereira, Miguel; Santos, SaraThe growing saturation of the advertising environment is driving brands to adopt provocative strategies to capture audience attention. Although the use of controversial themes is effective in increasing awareness, it entails high reputational risks. This study analyses, through a literature review, the impact of controversial campaigns on consumers’ emotional reactions and ideological perceptions. The findings show that controversy can intensify emotional bonding or trigger profound rejection, depending on the alignment between brand values and those of its audiences. Moreover, the strategic management of controversy, grounded in authenticity and communicational coherence, is essential to transform risks into opportunities for differentiation and to build loyal brand communities.

- Collaborative design of case studies applying an adaptive digital learning toolPublication . Isaías, Pedro; Lima, SolangeThis paper explores the use of Smart Sparrow as an authoring tool to explore course content using adaptive case studies that were developed by students. Smart Sparrow is a platform that endows teachers with the possibility to build adaptive learning pathways for their course content. The collaboration process started with students from a previous course within the Students as Partners framework. For the group participants, it was a rich learning opportunity for understanding the course content, the adaptive delivery platform and the course assessment. As students construct the cases, they become creators of content. This paper describes the process of creating the content using a collaborative design process, and the lessons learned.
