- From cognitive maps to hypervideo: supporting flexible and rich learner-centred environmentsPublication . Guimarães, Nuno; Chambel, Teresa; Bidarra, JoséThis paper discusses the creation of rich learning environments, based on the expression of knowledge structures through cognitive mapping tools and its integration with rich information spaces, namely based on hypervideo support. The paper introduces a background of cognitive and pedagogical or learning models that suggest the use of knowledge mapping tools and the support for different cognitive modes and learning styles. The power of video information, together with the exploration of non-linear access and navigation, is then presented. Experiences in both dimensions of the approach are presented.
- From cognitive landscapes to digital hyperscapesPublication . Bidarra, José; Dias, AnaThe widespread diffusion of e-learning in organizations encouraged the discovery of more effective ways for conveying digital information to learners, for instance, via the so-called LMSs (Learning Management Systems). A problem that we identified is that cognitive variables and pedagogical processes are rarely taken into consideration; sometimes these are confused with the mere use of “diversified” hypermedia resources by learners. Within a context of widespread multimedia content, following the emergence of massive information resources, we discuss the need for more powerful and effective learner-centered tools, capable of handling all kinds of design configurations and learning objects.
- Ecological strategies and knowledge mappingPublication . Bidarra, José; Dias, AnaIn this paper we discuss the concept of ecological strategy in relation to cognitive artefacts that reflect the expressive power of learners engaged in the development of significant knowledge paths. Our experiments show that learners strive to make sense of the fragmentary information surrounding them and in this endeavour they may benefit from the creation of knowledge maps, i.e. branched structures of knowledge that depart from a central node, a starting point or a homepage. In the course of creating these fractal hyperspaces on the Web, with integration of varied multimedia materials, the range of cognitive strategies used during the learning process becomes evident, both at individual and collective level. Perhaps ecological strategies may encourage a new research approach regarding the study of knowledge construction within complex hypermedia environments.
- Quantitative Evaluation Framework (QEF)Publication . Escudeiro, Paula; Bidarra, José
- Using a cartographic model to assist medical diagnosesPublication . Carvalho, Elizabeth; Marcos, Adérito; Santos, Maribel Yasmina; Espregueira-Mendes, João; Pereira, Rogério B.Objective: The main goal of the CHUB (cartographic human body) model is to introduce a cartographic approach that can assist in the analysis, visualization and diagnosis of medical images and related data. Method: A cartographic model is proposed as a reference framework for developing computer systems and applications. This model accommodates subtle spatial features of these data that may facilitate diagnosis. Medical images and related data are structured into different “human-referenced” information layers. Algebraic map operations are used to combine these layers and achieve greater insights into the information content. Results: Two case studies were considered to evaluate and validate the model: hydrokinetic therapy and the diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. A prototype based on the CHUB model was implemented, and two different approaches were used to test and evaluate it. Full acceptance of the model was achieved by clinicians who used the CHUB system.
- A prototype for cartographic human body analysisPublication . Carvalho, Elizabeth; Marcos, Adérito; Santos, Maribel Yasmina; Espregueira-Mendes, JoãoIt is proposed a cartographic-oriented model to visualize and analyze medical data relative to the human body. A prototype implementation has proved the viability and long-term promise of this approach in two case studies.
- Tone mapping operators on small screen devices: an evaluation studyPublication . Urbano, C.; Magalhães, L.; Moura, J.; Bessa, M.; Marcos, Adérito Fernandes; Chalmers, A.In the last decade, many techniques have been developed to reproduce high dynamic range imagery on traditional displays. These techniques, known as Tone Mapping Operators (TMOs), have been compared and ranked in different ways according to several image characteristics. However, none of these algorithms has been developed specifically for small-screen devices (SSD). In this paper, we evaluate currently used TMOs to show that SSDs with limited size, resolution and colour depth require specific research to find or create an appropriate solution. The research described in this paper is based on psychophysical experiments using three different types of displays (CRT, LCD and SSD). The obtained results show that rankings obtained are similar for the LCD and CRT but are significantly different for the SSD. Furthermore, these rankings show additionally that some characteristics of TMOs need to be emphasized to obtain better high-fidelity mapped images for SSDs.
- NUVE: resizing the digital gesturePublication . Moura, João Martinho; Marcos, Adérito; Barros, Né; Branco, PedroThe project presented here aims to explore the artistic possibilities offered by digital performances in real-time, in the form of dance, which is regarded as a privileged form of body language in the interaction between the performer and a digital artefact, an interaction that establishes itself as the driving element of the whole scenic narrative. To research the aforementioned possibilities, a digital artefact named NUVE was conceptualized, developed and implemented for the purpose of creating a dance performance where a performer will interact with the system, resulting in a fluid digital performance based on the theme of the analogue body versus the digital/virtual body, a performance that will be exhibited in public.
