O denominado cinema negro evidencia as complexas estruturas sociais que reproduzem a desigualdade social e o racismo, induzindo à culpabilização do povo negro.
- AR with cloud anchors: a way to improve HCI and interactive artPublication . Antunes, João; Bidarra, José; Figueiredo, MauroDespite all the potential of augmented reality to improve the human-computer interface (HCI) and the user experience, it’s still below the expected usage. The reason may be related to the fact that until recently the AR implementation was mostly markerbased or GPS-based to trigger additional content (video, 3D, or other) to the reality identified with the camera. The research in this paper is focused on AR marker-less solutions that allows sharing AR content between users across the Cloud, based on the anchor identification. With this technological paradigm shift, the potential for use of new functional environments and an unprecedented status of HCI enrichment is achieved. In addition to the operations related to the applications functionality, the door opens for media-art artists to create AR models that can be shared in a multiple user environment across the Cloud.
- Assum livre performance: a live environment for cyberperformancePublication . Sapucaia, Rosimária; Bidarra, José; Saldanha, ÂngelaThe performance “Assum Livre” integrates a sequence of artefacts fisrtly presented for the PhD Thesis “Backyard of Sounds: A path to sound immersion”. It was recently recreated in a cyberspace event, thus its transcription to cyberperformance. It consists of an artistic proposal that seeks to reflect on freedom/imprisonment, evoking a metaphor that recreates the experience of the lockdown periods in 2020/2021. The performance is based on the streaming of a video recorded with the author/singer performing part of the song “Assum Preto” (Teixeira and Gonzaga, 1950), simultaneously with the live performance of the other stanzas of the song. These alternate with the presentation of the lyrics, and the materialization of the performer. As backdrop we have a natural scenery as a projection of “freedom”, depicting the natural habitat threatened by human intervention, enhanced by the natural soundscapes and integrating the hybridization of image / sound / live performance. The main concepts, the description of the artefact, and the developments made are discussed.
- Backyard sounds: an immersive sound experience in Almenara-Vale do Jequitinhonha, BrazilPublication . Rocha, Rosimária; Saldanha, Ângela; Bidarra, JoséThis article is a study on the immersive sound installation “Backyard Sounds”. The union of our artistic practice to theoretical research resulted on the birth of this project. One of the main objectives of “Backyard Sounds” was the consideration of the sounds of contemporaneity. Seeking to lead users to experience videos and sounds in a dark room, since sounds were only set off with the users’ approach, sounds of nature and those produced by humans were used intentionally to demonstrate the inherent paradoxes of contemporary life. This research consists of a study on the immersive sound installation “Backyard Sounds”. The authors approach the artistic process involved in its creation and the concepts, notions, and reflections related to the computational artifact. The sounds heard were reveries of the soundscapes (concept of sounds of nature and others produced by humans), and it was intended to bring users the extreme paradoxes of contemporary life.
- Canon and process in the 3D modeling of human anatomyPublication . Azevedo, Hugo de; Araújo, AntónioThe authors argue that the concept of the anatomical canon is not just an arbitrary standard of anatomical beauty but an indispensable mnemonic tool for the artist. The authors further argue that the canon is most relevant when adapted to a specific artistic process and tools, and in particular must be updated to the requirements of the digital tools of 3D modeling. A proposal of such a canon is discussed, as well as the process of its synthesis from standard 3D primitives and its artistic applications.
- Computer artefact: the crucial element in artistic practice in digital art and culturePublication .
- Curating the Everywhere Museum of EverythingPublication . Veiga, Pedro Alves daThe Everywhere Museum of Everything is a research and action proposal founded on the array of aestheticised online content, which can be purposefully and critically curated in order to create a meaningful territory of contemporary online culture, art and knowledge creation. This abundance of content is rooted in a culture of consumerism, blackboxed mobile applications and social networks. Individual experiences in the physical world have been transformed by onlineness, a combination of the pervasive use of mobile devices and applications over Internet access, used to share opinions and evidence through original and remixed media, often complemented by hashtagging. Even if the majority of this content quickly becomes irrelevant and forgotten, it can still be accessed through an augmented view of the world, as digital media is frequently anchored to locations through geo-tagging or referencing. This vast collection lacks systematization and classification, but presents multiple possibilities for artists, curators and scholars.
- Digital media artefacts: hybrid praxisPublication . Marcos, Adérito; Araújo, António; Olivero, Lucas FabianThe special issue on Digital Media Artefacts, “Hybrid Praxis”, is a post-congress collective reflection about technology, science, and art. The invited authors participated in ARTeFACTo 2020 or ARTECH 2021; two key congresses were exploring state-of-the-art digital media arts. These encounters gather experiences from the academic world, practitioner world, and hybrid praxis, with art practice-based research as the common thread. If we reflect on contemporary technology, science, and art, we can see that technology is pushing more profound changes in sciences and arts than the other way around. Just take your eyes off the screen, look around you, and compare your daily life to what it was twenty or even ten years ago. Digital technology has profoundly changed your everyday life, relationships, possibilities, and how you express, explore, research, share, and do. We could therefore look exclusively into the digital domain to frame the relationship between the elements of this triad as it now stands.
