- Anamorphosis reformed: from optical illusions to immersive perspectivesPublication . Araújo, AntónioWe discuss a definition of conical anamorphosis that sets it at the foundation of both classical and curvilinear perspectives. In this view, anamorphosis is an equivalence relation between three-dimensional objects, which includes two-dimensional representatives, not necessarily flat. Vanishing points are defined in a canonical way that is maximally symmetric, with exactly two vanishing points for every line. The definition of the vanishing set works at the level of anamorphosis, before perspective is defined, with no need for a projection surface. Finally, perspective is defined as a flat representation of the visual data in the anamorphosis. This schema applies to both linear and curvilinear perspectives and is naturally adapted to immersive perspectives, such as the spherical perspectives. Mathematically, the view here presented is that the sphere and not the projective plane is the natural manifold of visual data up to anamorphic equivalence. We consider how this notion of anamorphosis may help to dispel some long-standing philosophical misconceptions regarding the nature of perspective.
- Anatomy primitivesPublication . Azevedo, Hugo de; Araújo, AntónioWe propose an installation that investigates the notion of the anatomical canon and its conceptual and practical role in the artistic modeling of human anatomy. This installation guides the visitor through the synthesis of a digital canon built from standard 3D primitives. Through a model that can be interactively constructed or deconstructed step-by-step, using simple controls, the visitoris invited to study, and draw, the human surface anatomy and its main features as interpreted through the natural tools of digital modeling.
- Applications of anamorphosis and mixed reality in a classroom settingPublication . Flores, Manuel; Araújo, AntónioWe report on a novel use of handmade anamorphoses in connection with Mixed Reality in a classroom setting involving Portuguese 9th grade visual education students. This is based on a conceptual reformulation of anamorphosis that makes it intrinsically immersive and connects it naturally with digital visualizations. We propose that this is a useful device for motivating the study of perspective and descriptive geometry for young students.
- ARTECH 2021 - Book of Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts - Hybrid Praxis – Art, Sustainability & TechnologyPublication . Lopes, Maria Manuela; Bastos, Paulo Bernardino; Araújo, António; Fabian, Lucas; Marcos, AdéritoBook of proceedings of the 10th edition of ARTECH - the International Conference on Digital and Interactive Arts, Centro de Congressos de Aveiro, Aveiro, Portugal 13-15 October 2021.

- Cadavre Exquis: Forking Paths from surrealism to interactive filmPublication . Silva, Bruno Mendes da; Tavares, Mirian; Costa, Susana; Araújo, António
- Canon and process in the 3D modeling of human anatomyPublication . Azevedo, Hugo de; Araújo, AntónioThe authors argue that the concept of the anatomical canon is not just an arbitrary standard of anatomical beauty but an indispensable mnemonic tool for the artist. The authors further argue that the canon is most relevant when adapted to a specific artistic process and tools, and in particular must be updated to the requirements of the digital tools of 3D modeling. A proposal of such a canon is discussed, as well as the process of its synthesis from standard 3D primitives and its artistic applications.
- Digital media artefacts: hybrid praxisPublication . Marcos, Adérito; Araújo, António; Olivero, Lucas FabianThe special issue on Digital Media Artefacts, “Hybrid Praxis”, is a post-congress collective reflection about technology, science, and art. The invited authors participated in ARTeFACTo 2020 or ARTECH 2021; two key congresses were exploring state-of-the-art digital media arts. These encounters gather experiences from the academic world, practitioner world, and hybrid praxis, with art practice-based research as the common thread. If we reflect on contemporary technology, science, and art, we can see that technology is pushing more profound changes in sciences and arts than the other way around. Just take your eyes off the screen, look around you, and compare your daily life to what it was twenty or even ten years ago. Digital technology has profoundly changed your everyday life, relationships, possibilities, and how you express, explore, research, share, and do. We could therefore look exclusively into the digital domain to frame the relationship between the elements of this triad as it now stands.
- Drawn onto a skybox: an invitation to collaborative immersive drawing using the spheri platformPublication . Araújo, António; Olivero, Lucas FabianWe describe an installation that invites the audience to collaborate on the performance of immersive drawings that will be visualized on-the-fly using the custom hardware-software platform Spheri. These drawings are made on a flat surface using traditional physical materials and following a modular tracing process that helps the user conform to the rules of cubical spherical perspective. Concurrently with the drawing performance, the Spheri platform captures the drawing and converts it into an immersive VR visualization on-the-fly, while tracking the drawing motion and choosing the camera viewpoint accordingly. The installation explores the new media of immersive handmade perspectives as well as new forms of intuitive and performative visualization. Countering the expectations of digital media as instruments for efficiency and ease of production, it aims instead at leading the user into slow and pondered geometrical thinking through handmade immersive drawing.
- Enhancement of Russian creative education: new post-graduation programme in digital art practicePublication . Marcos, Adérito; Amílcar, Martins; Saldanha, Ângela; Araújo, António; Carvalho, Elizabeth; Bidarra, José; Coelho, José; Shirley, Paulo; Veiga, Pedro Alves da; Cardoso, Vitor; Pais, Carlos CastilhoIn Project TEMPUS “Enhancement of Russian Creative Education: new Master Programme in Digital Arts in line with EU standards” (2014-2016) the Russian students had the opportunity to study in EU Universities for one semester. The Universidade Aberta, in Portugal, didn’t have a master degree in Digital Arts so a pilot programme had to be created: a new postgraduation in Digital Art Practice. This new curriculum, using blearning (based on online and face to face activities) with transdisciplinary methods, aims a practice oriented training on digital art. It started with a deep understanding of Lisbon, the relationship between people, cultural and artistic spaces and their environments. This knowledge inspired the students to produce and to create an artistic artefact presented in exhibition to an audience. With this postgraduation new possibilities started for reflection about global challenges for education in the millennium.
