  • Proceedings of the Tell.Me 2026. 3rd International Symposium on Biographical Narratives in Arts, Media and Society
Publication . Marcos, Adérito; Pereira, Selma; Maneira, António; António
The proceedings of Tell.Me 2026 – 3rd International Symposium on Biographical Narratives in Arts, Media, and Society present a curated collection of the scientific and artistic contributions to be presented during the upcoming symposium, scheduled to take place online on 28 and 29 May 2026. This edition is the result of a significant tripartite collaboration involving institutions in Macau (University of Saint Joseph), Portugal (ISMAT and CICANT), and Brazil (University of São Paulo), uniting a global community of scholars, artists, and practitioners. The volume explores the shifting landscape of the "biographical" in an age defined by algorithmic mediation and rapid digital circulation. Centred on the theme The Power of Biographical Narratives, the contributors move beyond traditional autobiography to examine how documentary, sonic, and hybrid storytelling practices reshape our understanding of identity and memory. These studies do more than describe contemporary culture; they problematize the ethical tensions of authorship, authenticity, and representational agency inherent in modern, participatory media. A recurring theme throughout the volume is the notion that, within our current digital ecosystem, narrative, media, and society do not merely transmit meaning, but actively co-create it. As biographical stories unfold across increasingly networked and interactive formats, they challenge traditional notions of authority and enable the democratisation of narration. By embracing these evolving forms, the collected works position storytelling not merely as a way to preserve the past but as a living, participatory process that actively negotiates and redefines both individual and collective identities.
  • The mountain knows who you are: visual storytelling through autoethnography
Publication . Šnajberková, Jaroslava; Bidarra, José; Tavares, Mirian
This paper discusses the concept of autoethnography used in doctoral research on digital media arts, based on long-term photographic fieldwork in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia. The paper argues that photographic practice and scientific inquiry are forms of knowledge production embedded in landscape and interconnected lived experiences. The mountain landscape is considered a living being by local communities. Places called ‘ezuamas’ function as interwoven realities that preserve memory and are sources of ancestral teaching. Human activity exists in a network connecting people with the environment and spiritual forces. Similarly, various roles, from photographer and artist to researcher, converge in the figure of the author, and ultimately motherhood fundamentally influences the course and outcome of the research. The paper also suggests possible resonances between analogue photographic processes and digital logic. Interviews with local participants revealed parallel perspectives in which technologies may be understood as manifestations of pre-existing cosmological principles. The project was divided into two phases, fieldwork and post-production. The narrative component combines analogue black-and-white photography and digital colour audiovisual material with autobiographical notes written during stays in the region between 2019 and 2022, with subsequent analytical reflections during data processing between 2022 and 2026.
  • Digital narratives as academic projects for resilient and culturally sustainable online teaching
Publication . Maneira, António; Pereira, Selma; Marcos, Adérito
Digital narratives are gaining prominence in academic settings, demonstrating clear advantages for enriching learning environments and fostering deeper engagement, particularly in online education. This paper presents a comprehensive framework for strategically employing digital narratives to cultivate vibrant learning communities through meaningful cultural exchange and to integrate individual perspectives into a broader, interconnected global context. Investigating the nuanced role of personal digital narratives in e-learning, we underscore their significant potential to foster inclusive pedagogical approaches that champion cultural sustainability, promote intercultural understanding, and bolster resilience in the face of globalization’s challenges. Drawing upon a comprehensive and critical review of existing literature, an insightful analysis of student-created projects, and direct feedback from student participants, this study robustly highlights digital storytelling's capacity to facilitate deeper and more empathetic cultural understanding, safeguard intangible cultural heritage by providing platforms for its expression, and shape both individual and collective identities within a globalized world. We advocate for the thoughtful and ethical integration of digital narratives to transform online higher education, fostering more impactful, culturally sensitive, and ultimately transformative learning experiences in globally connected and multicultural learning environments. Additionally, the study examines the growing potential of accessible technologies and AI-assisted pedagogical tools to enhance creativity, inclusion, and reflective practice in online higher education. We advocate for the thoughtful and ethical integration of digital narratives to transform online higher education, fostering more impactful, culturally sensitive, and ultimately transformative learning experiences in globally connected and multicultural learning environments.

  • Hands: reimaginando as tradições artesanais e a expressão urbana
Publication .
  • Feminist reflections on digital media art and urban studies for inclusive cities
    Publication . Carvalho, Isabel Cristina
This article critically examines the intersection of digital media art and urban studies through a feminist lens to co-create more inclusive cities. It focuses on the potential of digital art practices to stimulate women's active engagement in the critical analysis of urban space, thereby supporting participatory urban design. It highlights the opportunities offered by digital media art practices and how they can address the challenges women face on a daily basis, empowering them to express, create and collaborate freely. The study underscores how digital media art practices can counteract daily challenges faced by women, enabling them to express themselves, create, and collaborate freely. It stresses the significance of artistic practices that inspire critical spatial thinking, inciting women to recognise, challenge, and query restrictive social norms in public spaces. As the digital gender gap is one of the main obstacles to women's participation in the digital plan, we point out examples that simultaneously develop urban interventions for women's empowerment and promote digital literacy. Collaborative and participatory artistic interventions are highlighted, which develop mappings of urban experiences, often invisibilised, showing the importance of data visualisation by gender. The main theories and practices that emphasise the inclusion of gender perspectives in the configuration of cities and a reflection on digital media art interventions within and in urban space are presented. Digital media art, when integrated into feminist urban studies, shows potentiality for the identification of weaknesses and co-creation of solutions and innovations for contemporary urban challenges.
  • “UrdiSynth42” e a tecelagem figital
Publication .
