- Business intelligence and of transformational leadershipPublication . Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Duarte, Rogério; Jacquinet, Marc; Pimentel, Fernando; Silva, MariaThe evolution of the twenty-first century has witnessed the raise of management sciences and the sophistication of its tools and methodologies. A critical part of such evolution has been the development of computing science technologies. Under this setting, Quality Management Systems have developed as a fundamental bridge between information systems and the strategic and operational sides of both businesses and of public institutions. The strategic power of information management has been configured as the field of Business Intelligence, which captures the dynamic circuits of business process modelling and of the decision-making flows.
- Collaborative design of case studies applying an adaptive digital learning toolPublication . Isaías, Pedro; Lima, SolangeThis paper explores the use of Smart Sparrow as an authoring tool to explore course content using adaptive case studies that were developed by students. Smart Sparrow is a platform that endows teachers with the possibility to build adaptive learning pathways for their course content. The collaboration process started with students from a previous course within the Students as Partners framework. For the group participants, it was a rich learning opportunity for understanding the course content, the adaptive delivery platform and the course assessment. As students construct the cases, they become creators of content. This paper describes the process of creating the content using a collaborative design process, and the lessons learned.
- Corporate social responsabilityPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Duarte, Rogério; Pimentel, Fernando; Silva, MariaThe context of the digital economy and of the value systems that are prevalent in contemporary societies imply that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is at the core of business strategies, either as a genuine and results-seeking attitude or else as a reductive communication and marketing approach to the market. CSR functions as the other side of the coin of Quality Systems, as both share the same basic philosophy and working paradigm.
- E-assessment systems: an evaluation framework from the perspective of higher education expertsPublication . Isaias, Pedro; Miranda, Paula; Pifano, SaraAssessment represents a central aspect of the learning process. As learning environments become more flexible and unbound by the restrictions of traditional education and as students increase in number and diversity, technology assumes a critical role in the support of a more adequate, scalable and personalised assessment. The employment of eassessment systems can assist teachers in the development of several e-assessment initiatives, especially at a time when there is an unprecedented migration towards online learning. This paper aims to identify the essential characteristics of effective eassessment systems by appraising an evaluation framework to assist teachers to select efficient systems. The learning technology and e-assessment experts, who completed an online questionnaire, validated the identification of the key characteristics of effective e-assessment systems: variety of assessment design options, scalability, security, accessibility and usability, feedback features, personalisation, financial cost and interoperability.
- Emerging boundaries of human rights, conviviality, and social science of globalization: critiques in search of new dynamicsPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Bussotti, Luca; Nhaueleque, LauraThe panel deals with three interrelated issues – even if their commonness does not seem that obvious – of the current transformations of global societies and social sciences across very diverse geographical areas around the globe: human rights, conviviality (Caillé) and the issue of the “global” in social sciences. Each subject is contested. Each has reached a “frontier” and the debate turns around the question of regress or new ways of expansion. So, the question is what are the dynamics of new phenomena that try to cross the frontier.
- Empathic technologies and virtual, contextual and mobile learning in VR/AR/MR environmentsPublication . Isaias, Pedro; Reis, FranciscoStudents’ motivation and interest as well interaction between students and teachers in e-Learning and Mobile Learning environments can be improved through the use of affective technologies and empathic systems. This paper introduces Emphatic concepts, an emphatic platform and an Emphatic Forum approach. It contextualizes this initiative within the Emphatic Products, a EU/ITEA2 research project, and proposes future developments in terms of unique features such as moving to, adapting to, even defining a whole new interaction paradigm in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) immersive environments.
- Extending the social tradition on organisational learning: ethics, gender and citizenshipPublication . Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Duarte, Rogério; Jacquinet, MarcPurpose – to highlight the controversial and potentially rich dilemmas of contemporaneity in organizational settings, including the context of the knowledge economy, the need to promote knowledge management, the structuring role of organizational learning, and the enabling and powerful framing, which emerges from the ethical, gender and citizenship dimensions. Design – an exploratory theoretical inquiry, which acknowledges the importance of capturing the philosophical argumentation behind different epistemic options and schools of thought, including the possibility to understand the empowering potential of concepts such as social innovation. Findings – the acknowledgement of the role of signification is highlighted in a crucial way: according to the social tradition perspective, there are two central items that illustrate the process through which meaning-making emerges spontaneously in human spheres of action, the first one is language use and the second one is the participation in social practices. Practical Implications – ethics, gender and citizenship are direct entry spaces for the understanding of the complexity of how humans organise themselves and create and share knowledge in order to optimise their action. Originality – the full power of human thought and action is achieved when there is enough individual and social motivational alignment in order to promote the best options available; such options do emerge and succeed as a matter-of-fact evidence of the creative and interpretative capacity, which finds in organisations one of the best instances for such human development.
- Flipping the classroom effectively: evaluation results from a course at the University of QueenslandPublication . Isaías, Pedro; McKimmie, Blake; Bakharia, Aneesha; Zornig, JohnThe flipped classroom is regarded as a valuable approach to engage students more deeply in the learning process and as a strategy to promote active learning within the classroom. As more educators resort to it to enhance teaching and learning, it is important to assess its effectiveness and determine its pedagogical value. This paper examines the results of the evaluation of a flipped psychology course. The evaluation process was comprised of interviews, surveys and the analysis of clickstream data. The evaluation included the students, tutors and the course creators and it highlighted the aspects that were successful and the improvements that can be made in future editions of the flipped course.
- Gameful design principles for self-learning in gamified eLearning systemsPublication . Lindley, Marco; Isaias, PedroThis paper explores the field of Gamified eLearning Systems (GeLS), these are a strong educational platform being implemented at all educational levels. Through a study of currently available GeLS, several common attributes contributing to their success are highlighted as well as some common weaknesses, in particular, the problems of linearity, repetitiveness and lack of user freedom. This paper asks whether these weaknesses can be addressed by using design techniques typical of Open World and Rogue Like games. Based on a user survey on Open World and Rogue Like game experience, six new design principles are formulated, alongside a model capable of implementing these design principles in a GeLS.
