- Acquisition of competencies in mathematics through gamesPublication . Ferreira, Maria Cristina; Pereira, José António; Oliveira, AmilcarThe objective of this paper is to present the fundamentals of game theory and illustrate how the theory can be applied in education of Mathematics.Literature specific applications of game theory across all levels of instructor-led education. With a game theory model, we provide a mathematical description of a social situation in which two or more individuals or players interact. We strongly suggestthat traditional teaching techniques of mathematics should be complemented with games.

- Attitudes, barriers and motivators as factors for sustainability of higher education e-Learning programmes at Universidade Aberta, PortugalPublication . Nicolau, Paula Bacelar; Caeiro, Sandra; Martinho, Ana Paula; Azeiteiro, UlissesIn higher education distance learning institutions, where studies are carried on through a variety of distance learning regimes, from the correspondence and earlier forms of distance education to fully online e-learning programmes, and where planners and administrators seize the effective adoption and deployment of technology-enabled education, student attitude and motivation assume considerable significance. Attitudinal pre-dispositions, institutional and allied barriers (including appropriate policy initiatives), besides the scientific and pedagogical quality of degree programmes are assumed to play a crucial role in sustainability of higher education systems. This article reports the findings of a study conducted at Universidade Aberta, Portugal—the Portuguese Distance Learning Education University—to examine student attitudes towards e-learning and to identify barriers and motivators of e-learning adoption, which are key factors for decreasing dropout rates of a 2nd cycle degree e-learning programme, analysed as a case study.
- Black trail in blue oceansPublication . Carapeto, CristinaTourism, as an industry, has been increasing in recent years. The cruise industry might be the best example. Huge ships cross the oceans, offering luxury and amenities to thousands of people. They are real floating cities with short stops at several places where tourists disembark and invade historical areas and fragile ecosystems, taking great pleasure from the contact with different cultures and exotic environments. The cost of this growing industry that is available to only a few is paid by us all with the decrease in the quality of the air and the damage that is inflicted on the oceans. It is therefore urgent to know the true environmental cost of this type of tourism and reflect on choices. It is possible to have both (cruises and environmental quality) as long as regulations are implemented and people moderate their behaviour.

- Catalogue of Cenozoic echinoid type specimens in the Geological Museum (Lisbon, Portugal)Publication . Pereira, PedroThe present catalogue lists the Cenozoic echinoid type specimens housed in the collections of the Geological Museum (Lisbon, Portugal). This material comprises a total of 69 type specimens (seven holotypes, one paratype, 52 syntypes, two lectotypes, and seven paralectotypes) of fifteen Miocene species from Angola and Portugal. Additionally, it is considered that Echinolampas (Echinolampas) maxima de Loriol, 1896 is a valid species and E. (E.) barcinensis Lambert, 1907 is its junior synonym.
- Chatbots scenarios for educationPublication . Virkus, Sirje; São Mamede, Henrique; Rocio, Vitor; Dickel, Jochen; Zubikova, Olga; Butkiene, Rita; Vaiciukynas, Evaldas; Ceponiene, Lina; Gudoniene, DainaEducational chatbots are digital tools designed to assist learners in various educational settings. These chatbots use natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning algorithms to simulate human conversation and respond to user queries in a way that facilitates learning. They can be integrated into various educational platforms such as learning management systems, educational apps, and websites to provide learners with a personalized and interactive learning experience. Our paper discusses different scenarios for educational purposes and suggests in total four scenarios for educational needs.
- Combining sentiment analysis scores to improve accuracy of polarity classification in MOOC postsPublication . Laroca, Herbert; Rocio, VitorSentiment analysis is a set of techniques that deal with the verification of sentiment and emotions in written texts. This introductory work aims to explore the combination of scores and polarities of sentiments (positive, neutral and negative) provided by different sentiment analysis tools. The goal is to generate a final score and its respective polarity from the normalization and arithmetic average scores given by those tools that provide a minimum of reliability. The texts analyzed to test our hypotheses were obtained from forum posts from participants in a massive open online course (MOOC) offered by Universidade Aberta de Portugal, and were submitted to four online service APIs offering sentiment analysis: Amazon Comprehend, Google Natural Language, IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding, and Microsoft Text Analytics. The initial results are encouraging, suggesting that the average score is a valid way to increase the accuracy of the predictions from different sentiment analyzers.
