- The lost photos: archaeothanatology applied to photo documentation from the 1960s reveals new data about Mesolithic burials, Sado valley, PortugalPublication . Stjerna, Rita Peyroteo; Nilsson Stutz, Liv; Cardoso, João LuísThe Mesolithic shell middens in Portugal aggregate some of the largest and earliest burial grounds known, around 8000 years old, arranged and maintained by populations with an exclusive hunting, fishing, and foraging lifestyle. The archaeological material is housed in museums and consists of artefacts, field documentation (written, graphic) and more than 300 human skeletons. This archaeological assemblage is exceptional due to its quality and antiquity, but its early excavation introduces several challenges to the modern research. Here we present an analysis of the burials in the shell middens of Arapouco and Poças de S. Bento in the Sado valley, Portugal following the principles of archaeothanatology to reconstruct past ritual practices as responses to death. Our analysis was based on unpublished photographs from the 1960s and our aims were 1) to identify the nature of the deposits (primary, secondary); 2) to describe the space of decomposition of the cadaver (filled, empty, mixed); 3) to reconstruct the initial position of the cadaver in the feature; 4) to reconstruct the grave features, such as size and shape; 5) to detect the initial presence of perishable materials deposited along with the cadaver, such as structures behind the bodies, or wrappings of the body at the time of disposal; 6) to clearly define the deposits containing more than one individual; 7) to identify post-depositional manipulations of the cadaver. The method, which emerged in the context of field archaeology lays great emphasis on the field situation and it has been argued that assessment of the material may not be possible if key observations are not documented in situ. Despite the limitations, we demonstrate with this case study that archaeothanatology is a robust and reliable method to assess, study, and retrieve new data from the extensive archaeological assemblages of human remains available in museums.

- Combining sentiment analysis scores to improve accuracy of polarity classification in MOOC postsPublication . Laroca, Herbert; Rocio, VitorSentiment analysis is a set of techniques that deal with the verification of sentiment and emotions in written texts. This introductory work aims to explore the combination of scores and polarities of sentiments (positive, neutral and negative) provided by different sentiment analysis tools. The goal is to generate a final score and its respective polarity from the normalization and arithmetic average scores given by those tools that provide a minimum of reliability. The texts analyzed to test our hypotheses were obtained from forum posts from participants in a massive open online course (MOOC) offered by Universidade Aberta de Portugal, and were submitted to four online service APIs offering sentiment analysis: Amazon Comprehend, Google Natural Language, IBM Watson Natural Language Understanding, and Microsoft Text Analytics. The initial results are encouraging, suggesting that the average score is a valid way to increase the accuracy of the predictions from different sentiment analyzers.
- Boxing the visual sphere: towards a systematic solution of the cubical perspectivePublication . Araújo, António; Olivero, Lucas; Rossi, AdrianaCubic perspective is an attractive option for drawing VR panoramas, as it carries with it the familiarity of classical perspective and its ease of drawing line segments. Its simplicity is however only apparent as the transition of line images between the various planes of the cube can be baffling to the draughtsman. We argue that the best way to systematize this perspective is to see it fully as a spherical perspective and start by classifying and rendering its geodesics.
- Extracting actionable knowledge to increase business utility in sport servicesPublication . Pinheiro, Paulo; Cavique, LuísThe increase in retention of customer in gyms and health clubs is nowadays a challenge that requires concrete and personalized actions. Traditional data mining studies focused essentially on predictive analytics, neglecting the business domain. This work presents an actionable knowledge discovery system which uses the following pipeline (data collection, predictive model, loyalty actions). In the first step, it extracts and transforms existing real data from databases of the sports facilities. In a second step, predictive models are applied to identify user profiles more susceptible to dropout. Actionable rules are generated based on actionable attributes that should be avoided, in order to increase retention. Finally, in the third step, based on the previous actionable knowledge, experimental planning is carried out, with test and control groups, in order to find the best loyalty actions for customer retention. This document presents a simulation and the measure of the business utility of an actions sequence to avoid dropout.
