- Adaptação do Communities That Care Youth Survey para Portugal: um estudo pilotoPublication . Henriques, Susana; Rabelo, RachelO questionário Communities That Care Youth Survey (CTCYS) avalia fatores de risco e de proteção, prevendo uma série de problemas de saúde comportamentais, incluindo uso de substâncias psicoativas, violência e delinquência em jovens e adolescentes. Em 2022, o CTCYS foi adaptado para Portugal, incorporando fatores de risco e proteção, associados ao uso de substâncias psicoativas, comportamento antissocial e problemas de saúde mental em quatro dimensões: comunidade, família, escola e indivíduo-pares. O presente estudo investigou as propriedades psicométricas e a aplicabilidade do CTCYS em Portugal. O processo de adaptação envolveu a tradução e o refinamento do US CTCYS complementado de discussões em grupos focais com alunos e especialistas. Realizou-se ainda um pré-teste num dos municípios da Região Autónoma dos Açores (RAA) no sentido de aferir a consistência interna do instrumento. Os resultados indicam que a estrutura do CTCYS adaptado a Portugal capta amplamente os principais fatores de risco e proteção considerados. A versão final foi aplicada a 1218 alunos a da RAA e foi realizada nova análise de confiabilidade e validade dos constructos visando a verificação da confiabilidade dos resultados da pesquisa. De modo geral, a os resultados mostraram-se promissores. Neste artigo apresentamos a análise dos resultados que identificam maiores efeitos para o consumo de substâncias psicoativas nos jovens da RAA. O uso dos resultados do CTCYS na identificação dos fatores de risco mais proeminentes para o consumo de substâncias em adolescentes, demonstra o potencial desta ferramenta para orientação de intervenções comunitárias de prevenção.
- Alcohol consumption and night-time leisure among brasilian studentsPublication . Freitas, Heloisa; Henriques, Susana; Uvinha, Ricardo R.; Lusby, Carolin; Romera, LianaRecreational drug use is recognized by the World Health Organization as the consumption of alcoholic beverages, carried out by a portion of youth during leisure contexts. This research aimed at knowing the types of recreational drug use of a population of young Brazilian university students. This is an exploratory and quantitative research, developed through an anonymous and semi-structured questionnaire. The sample consisted of 217 university students, aged 18 to 24 from a public university in the city of Vitoria- Brazil. The results showed that the recreational uses of substances occur mostly during leisure time. Such scenarios represent, for these young people, the possibility of rupture with daily life and the adult universe, characterized by the imposition of rules. For a young group, night-time leisure represents an important context of sociability and alcohol consumption. Among those surveyed, 63.6% consumed alcoholic beverages at night outings and 45.1% almost every weekend. Regarding the pattern of use, 49% consume binge drinking, especially when drinking in informal spaces such as streets and squares due to the lower regulatory control. The results corroborate that alcohol consumption is related to leisure agendas and address issues such as autonomous expression of identities and lifestyles in contemporary society.
- Before and now: the labour situation of clients in a therapeutic communityPublication . Henriques, Susana; Candeias, PedroThis article aims to identify changes in the work situation among problematic drug users (PDU) clients of an international therapeutic community located in Portugal, after the completion of treatment. In this article, we analyse these changes on the assumption that entry to the labour market is essential for effective social reintegration. To achieve our aim, we carried out a pilot study with an analysis of the administrative records of a therapeutic community and then held telephone interviews with 63 former clients. Different work-related factors were compared, with special attention being paid to the changes registered. We concluded that, after reatment, although there was greater instability, educational qualifications and the number of PDU employees with an occupation increased. There was a decrease in factory workers and an increase in administrative functions. First jobs were obtained via a more formal channel, while the most recent ones were obtained on own initiative. This leads to the conclusion that after an initial period of greater difficulties the PDU participants in this study manage to gain higher autonomy and better integration into the labour market.
- Building a framework based on european quality standards for prevention and e-learning to evaluate online training courses in preventionPublication . Henriques, Susana; Broughton, Natalie; Teixeira, António; Burkhart, Gregor; Miovský, MichaelPrevention practitioners are required to develop their skills and competencies in response to recent advances in prevention science. It is thus important to develop training programmes which ensure the development of a prevention workforce. Aiming to respond to this need, the Specialised Training Course in Addictions Prevention is based on the European Universal Prevention Curriculum (EUPC) and delivered online. In view of this being the first online course based on the EUPC, the absence of training programmes for prevention practitioners in Portugal, and the significance of international guidelines in these two domains (prevention and online distance learning), it was considered important to create a framework which supports the evaluation and monitoring of the course. This paper presents a framework for the evaluation of the specialised training course in prevention based on two models: the European Drug Prevention Quality Standards, and the adaptation of the European Standards and Guidelines to digital programmes and courses – Considerations for Quality Assurance of E-learning Provision. Given the importance of quality assurance in contemporary society, the framework presented in this paper is a tool that may be useful for evaluating other online distance learning programmes which focus on the professional development of prevention practitioners.
- Collaborative management in schools: experiences on the role of ibero-american networks in health educationPublication . In this context, we understand collaborative management as a model in which school leaders promote the involvement of the school community, are based on open communication processes, and are receptive to innovation. Networking, enhanced by digital technologies, is one of the resources of these collaborative practices in the management of schools that, at the same time, reinforce them. Following a methodological strategy of an exploratory and qualitative nature, we analyze in a comparative perspective the public policies that frame health education in schools. The focus is on two experiences carried out in a network, in Brazil and Portugal. The results allow us to (re)think health education strategies in the school context, based on collaborative management strategies and cooperation networks.
- Discriminative characteristics of marginalised novel psychoactive users: a transnational studyPublication . The study was implemented within the framework of a transnational project of six European countries (Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal). Our aim here is to report on the distinct and differentiating characteristics of marginalised NPS users. Three subgroups of a total of 3023 adult NPS users (socially marginalised, night life, online community) were examined regarding their socio-demographic characteristics, substance use, and external motives towards NPS use. Poland and Hungary reported higher rates of NPS use in comparison to traditional controlled drugs. The external/contextual motives did not play a central role in the background of NPS use, the least important motives were alleged legality and non-detectability of these substances. Marginalised (defined as those accessing low threshold harm reduction services) users’ substance use patterns are different from the other two groups in terms of showing more intense and riskier drug use. The most important variables which contributed to be categorised as a marginalised NPS user were lower level education, being older, having an unfavourable labour market position and using drugs intravenously. Contextual motives did not play a decisive role in being categorised as a marginalised user when drug use pattern was controlled. These identified discriminative features of marginalised drug users should inform policy makers to develop and implement tailor-made interventions targeting this user group to successfully tackle the elevated public health concerns associated with NPS use.
- Domestic violence against LGBTI people: perspectives of Portuguese education professionalsPublication . Sousa, Edgar; Neves, Sofia; Ferreira, Mafalda; Topa, Joana; Vieira, Cristina Pereira; Borges, Janete S.; Rodrigo, Costa; André, LiraLesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people are more likely to be exposed to domestic violence than the rest of the population. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, 28 professionals from the educational sector, aged between 28 and 64 years old (M = 44.5), were interviewed to describe and understand their perspectives on the sector’s ability to support, intervene and get involved with LGBTI people and, particularly, with victims or former victims of domestic violence. Through a thematic content analysis, three main themes emerged: (i) life trajectories of LGBTI people; (ii) domestic violence perpetrated against LGBTI people; and (iii) training of the educational sector to intervene with LGBTI people. The results show that Portuguese education professionals are not trained to recognize and intervene with LGBTI people and, in particular, with those who are victims of domestic violence, since they are unaware of the existence of protocols and/or guidelines for detecting and preventing risk situations among students. Furthermore, the curricular plan fails in the coverage of domestic violence and LGBTI-related topics, although the National Strategy for Citizenship Education has been implemented in Portugal since 2017. Findings suggest the need to invest in education professionals’ training.
- Evaluation of the lights4violence program: reduction in machismo and acceptance of violence among adolescents in EuropePublication . Pérez Martínez, Vanesa; Sanz-Aranguez, Belen; Ferrer, Rosario; Bowes, Nicola; Alba Pereira, Alba; Guadaño Sánchez, Miriam; Albaladejo-Blázquez, Natalia; Rosati, Nicoletta; Neves, Sofia; Vieira, Cristina Pereira; Jankowiak, Barbara; Jaskulska, Sylwia; Waszyńska, Katarzyna; Cuadrado Vives, Maria CarmenBackground: Machismo and acceptance of violence (AV) against women are part of the social construction of hegemonic masculinity and are related to the risk of dating violence. This study aims to analyze the efectiveness of the Lights4Violence program in reducing machismo and AV in secondary school students from diferent European cities. Methods: Quasi-experimental longitudinal study using a convenience sample of 1,146 high school students from diferent European cities (12–17 years old) including 575 intervention group students (59.1% girls) and 571 control group students (62.7% girls). We performed linear regression models to identify the efect of the intervention, model‑ling the diference in means in machismo and AV (dependent variables) between wave-2 and wave-1. Results: An interaction was identifed between the group variable and the empathy variable. In wave-2, girls with high empathy at baseline in the intervention group obtained lower mean AV scores (β: -0.131; p=0.004). However, the boys in the intervention group (reference: control group) with low empathy at baseline registered a signifcant increase in the mean values of machismo (β: 0.247; p<0.001). Conclusion: The importance of empathy is shown in the efectiveness of interventions to reduce machismo and AV in adolescents. While the Lights4Violence program focuses on promoting healthy relationships, there were some controversial results. It is possible that some children, especially those with less empathy, may have felt “challenged” during the intervention and/or assessment. This suggests the need for the development of interventions that also consider psychological processes and integrate the promotion of positive expressions of masculinity. - Lógicas de risco na experiência da sexualidade juvenilPublication . Vieira, Cristina PereiraO domínio da contraceção é um campo de ambiguidades entre as forças modernas de racionalização (representadas pelo uso do preservativo aconselhado pela medicina para prevenir o risco de IST/sida), as forças morais subjetivas (representadas pela confiança na fidelidade do/a parceiro/a) e os preconceitos sociais (representados pelo medo da gravidez pré-conjugal). Claramente, a opção de contraceção funciona no modelo relacional. O artigo apresenta dados de estudo empírico com jovens portugueses(as), pela técnica de grupos de discussão. A análise dos dados mostra como nas racionalidades leigas a avaliação dos riscos na sexualidade (aqui referidos relativamente à IST/sida e à gravidez), a lógica da contraceção e as opções que dela emergem aparecem incrustadas a valores, símbolos e significados que ultrapassam a lógica da racionalidade científica e que justificam uma não total adesão à normatividade. O que nos leva pensar que as campanhas de promoção da saúde sexual e reprodutiva, em particular quando dirigidas aos jovens, não devem atender unicamente a um saber pericial, técnico ou especializado que informa o indivíduo, sem ter presente o conhecimento leigo.
- New psychoactive substances: towards a conceptual delimitationPublication . Henriques, Susana; Guerreiro, Maria das Dores; Silva, Joana PaulaNew Psychoactive Substances (nps) are a relatively recent phenomenon characterized by continuous expansion throughout more or less the entire world in the last decade. They include a diversity of natural or synthetic substances that are not yet on official lists and whose great variety and rapid transformations make the nps concept itself hard to define. Methodologically combining qualitative methods in order to present a problematized systematization of national and public policies, and quantitative ones presenting the results of a survey applied to users of nps in Portugal, the paper contributes to a more precise definition of nps and their effects and to know about the evolution of the applicable legal framework.
