- A case for learning sites with video bytes: the hyperscapes experiencePublication . Bidarra, José; Guimarães, Nuno
- Connecting cat: a transmedia learning projectPublication . Rodrigues, Patrícia; Bidarra, JoséIn this paper we present an overview of a transmedia learning project. As part of an ongoing research project, Connecting Cat provides glimpses of a story taking place in the material, physical world, and the imaginary world through image, sound and text. Specifically targeted to English as Second Language students, the project supports entry points for learning through immersion in an adventure story and engagement in multimodal learning activities.
- Digital art, sustainability and design thinking: study of a case in higher educationPublication . Cruz, Sara; Vieira, Célia; Bidarra, JoséAfter a brief overview on the relationship between art and sustainability, in this paper we present a practical case that illustrates the potential of using design thinking in raising awareness towards environmental sustainability in the context of Higher Education. We describe the phases in the application of design thinking by a group of students, and evaluate the impact of this procedure on their vision regarding the relationship between art and nature, and their motivation to find artistic solutions with an impact on society.
- Enhancing learner: centred design of hypermedia artefacts through cognitive and affective indicatorsPublication . Bidarra, José; Chambel, Teresa; Guimarães, NunoThis paper discusses some issues and research findings of the project we call UNIBASE. In order to improve the learning processes through hypermedia technology, we investigated the role of cognitive mapping and the application of certain cognitive ambiguities and breakdowns. The addition of clear learning goals, explicitly expressed through cognitive mapping tools, allowed students to acquire the right knowledge and helped them adopt a productive strategy. Complementary to this elicitation process, video information embedded in hypermedia learning environments was used to increase the levels of attention and motivation, using devices such as movement, novelty and appeal. Our aims were to explore and develop the application of innovative hypermedia artefacts.
- Handling hypermedia complexity: fractal hyperscapes and mind mappingPublication . Bidarra, José; Guimarães, Nuno; Kommers, PietMainstream research on educational technology has focused on the discovery of more effective ways for conveying “relevant” information to students. A problem that we identified is that students often do not engage with the subject matter, especially when dealing with complex domain representations, even when high quality hypermedia resources are available. With the widespread of multimedia content and the emergence of massive information resources there is a need for powerful and effective learning tools that can handle all kinds of media configurations. Our results show that concept mapping, mind mapping and the creation of hyperscapes are very effective means to give learners control over hypermedia materials and improve motivation.
- Insights from a digital diary: exploring the creative process of the game-installation In[The Hate Booth]Publication . Costa, Susana; Tavares, Mirian; Bidarra, José; Silva, Bruno Mendes daThis article proposes an approach to the creative gesture, particularly in digital art, and the methodologies that provide access to the process of creation. It suggests a study on the development of a digital diary to document and reflect on the creative process, with a specific focus on the In[The Hate Booth] project. Through analysing entries in the project's digital diary, the research explores the artistic process and the development of the artwork. The findings highlight how digital diaries may ease idea exploration, the conceptual breakthroughs, and critical insights of the creative work, also emphasizing the importance of documenting the process for digital preservation.
- Integrating sustainability into art and design education: curriculum developmentPublication . Mapar, Mahsa; Bidarra, José; Caeiro, Sandra; Veiga, Pedro Alves da; Nicolau, Paula BacelarSustainability is an important factor in art educa>on. Several ar>sts, in line with the UN Agenda 2030, have embraced the idea of art for sustainability in different ways to reflect the protec>on of natural landscapes, the consequences of industrializa>on and the growth of ci>es, and the use of resources. However, these topics are rarely taught to art students in higher educa>on, considering belonging to science subjects. On the other hand, to change art students' aLtudes toward sustainability, it is essen>al that social conscience and responsibility emerge from both knowledge and values. In this context, the ERASMUS+ ARDES project - Short Learning Programme (SLP) for ARt and DEsign and Sustainability with special focus on environment and climate change (CC) (2022-2024)- has been set up through a strategic partnership among 5 European partners: MyDocumenta (Spain), European University Cyprus (Cyprus), Universidade Aberta (Portugal), EINA (Spain) and the associated partner LABA Valencia (Spain). The project intends to provide open educa>onal resources for art students by integra>ng knowledge and values associated with sustainability and CC through art ac>vi>es, design techniques, and digital solu>ons. This paper aims to present the ini>al results of the curriculum development of this SLP through formal learning modules and extracurricular community work concerning sustainability and CC. The SLP, made of 156 academic hours plus an extracurricular community ac>vity, consists of 3 main modules: i) Module 1- Art, Design, Sustainability, and CC within historical and contemporary contexts; aiming to introduce the concepts of sustainability, the link with art and design, and sustainability assessment methods in art and design context; ii) Module 2- Art and Design for Communica>ng Sustainability and CC; aiming to use art and design as strategic tools for u>liza>on of visual communica>on, thus helping students to compile design projects concerning sustainability and CC; and iii) Module 3- Digital tools for the interac>ve engagement of audiences with Art and Design; aiming to introduce the concepts and applica>on of big data and the principles of audience engagement. Two learning plans were developed: 1) a "Module Plan" containing the modules objec>ves, competencies, essen>al ques>ons, resources, and assessment methods, and 2) a “Lesson Plan” covering the details of the educa>onal materials and ac>vi>es in each lesson. Various learning materials were developed, including text, slides, videos, and engaging tools. Also, diverse individual/collabora>ve ac>vi>es were designed, classified from project-based ac>vi>es, reflec>on on exis>ng art produc>ons, designing artwork, working with European and local databases, and live performance, all in the concept of sustainability and CC. In the next step (Oct 2023), the SLP will be piloted in partner Universi>es, targe>ng postgraduate students in art studies. The effec>veness of the training will be later assessed through a ques>onnaire. It is expected that by the end of the training, the students will be able to recognize how sustainability and CC integrate into the concepts of art and design, to later enhance their mo>va>on, opportunity, and ability for sustainable ac>ons in society, thus contribute to SDG 13, target 13.3 and SDG4, target 4.7.
- Interactive media arts and sustainability: the challenges of human-nature connectionsPublication . Cruz, Sara; Vieira, Célia; Bidarra, JoséThe relationship between art and nature has gained increased prominence over the past few decades, as the concept of sustainability has become more significant. Ultimately, in this equation, art seeks ways to rekindle the connection between human and nature, writing a utopia of happiness that depends on the balance between the human microcosm and the planetary macrocosm. We wonder if technological developments in art provide artists with more resources to facilitate this reconnection. From Van Gogh's "Starry Night", a two-dimensional painting, to "Starry Night" in an immersive exhibition, New Media Arts takes the viewer's experience into a new dimension, virtual, augmented, three-dimensional, immersive. Are these resources more conducive to an aesthetic experience that helps reduce the fracture between human and nature? Throughout this article, after reflecting on the relationship between art, sustainability and new media, we will describe two installations developed with the aim of understanding the challenges facing media arts in the context of an artistic practice committed to environment preservation.
