- Searching a mixed corpus in the light of the new portuguese orthographic normPublication . Carvalho, Gracinda; Falé, Isabel; Matos, David Martins de; Rocio, VitorA mixed corpus of Portuguese is one in which texts of different origins produce different spelling variants for the same word. A new norm, which will bring together the written texts produced both in Portugal and Brazil, giving then a more uniform orthography, has been effective since 2009, but what happens in the perspective of search, to corpora created before the norm came into practice, or within the transition period? Is the information they contain outdated and worthless? Do they need to be converted to the new norm? In the present work we analyse these questions.
- IDEST: International Database of Emotional Short TextsPublication . Kaakinen, Johanna K.; Werlen, Egon; Kammerer, Yvonne; Acarturk, Cengiz; Aparicio, Xavier; Baccino, Thierry; Ballenghein, Ugo; Bergamin, Per B.; Castells Gómez, Núria; Costa, Armanda; Falé, Isabel; Mégalakaki, Olga; Ruiz Fernandez, SusanaWe introduce a database (IDEST) of 250 short stories rated for valence, arousal, and comprehensibility in two languages. The texts, with a narrative structure telling a story in the first person and controlled for length, were originally written in six different languages (Finnish, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish), and rated for arousal, valence, and comprehensibility in the original language. The stories were translated into English, and the same ratings for the English translations were collected via an internet survey tool (N = 573). In addition to the rating data, we also report readability indexes for the original and English texts. The texts have been categorized into different story types based on their emotional arc. The texts score high on comprehensibility and represent a wide range of emotional valence and arousal levels. The comparative analysis of the ratings of the original texts and English translations showed that valence ratings were very similar across languages, whereas correlations between the two pairs of language versions for arousal and comprehensibility were modest. Comprehensibility ratings correlated with only some of the readability indexes. The database is published in osf.io/9tga3, and it is freely available for academic research.

- Fonética e fonologia do portuguêsPublication .
- Prosodic, syntactic, semantic guidelines for topic structures across domains and corporaPublication . Mata, Ana Isabel; Moniz, Helena; Móia, Telmo; Gonçalves, Anabela; Silva, Fátima; Batista, Fernando; Duarte, Inês; Oliveira, Fátima; Falé, IsabelThis paper presents the annotation guidelines applied to naturally occurring speech, aiming at an integrated account of contrast and parallel structures in European Portuguese. These guidelines were defined to allow for the empirical study of interactions among intonation and syntax-discourse patterns in selected sets of different corpora (monologues and dialogues, by adults and teenagers). In this paper we focus on the multilayer annotation process of left periphery structures by using a small sample of highly spontaneous speech in which the distinct types of topic structures are displayed. The analysis of this sample provides fundamental training and testing material for further application in a wider range of domains and corpora. The annotation process comprises the following time-linked levels (manual and automatic): phone, syllable and word level transcriptions (including co-articulation effects); tonal events and break levels; part-of-speech tagging; syntactic-discourse patterns (construction type; construction position; syntactic function; discourse function), and disfluency events as well. Speech corpora with such a multi-level annotation are a valuable resource to look into grammar module relations in language use from an integrated viewpoint. Such viewpoint is innovative in our language, and has not been often assumed by studies for other languages.
- Auditory processing disorder test battery in European Portuguese: development and normative data for pediatric populationPublication . Martins, Jorge Humberto; Alves, Marisa; Andrade, Susana; Falé, Isabel; Teixeira, AntónioThere is an increasing need for state-of-the-art Central Auditory Processing assessment for Portuguese native speakers, applicable as early as possible. As a contribution to answering this need, this paper presents a new battery for Central Auditory Processing assessment for European Portuguese applicable to children aged 5 and above, named BAPA-PE, providing information regarding test selection and development. The battery consists of six behavioral tests: Staggered Spondaic Words (SSW) for European Portuguese, Filtered Speech, Speech in Noise, Detection Interval in Noise, Duration, and Frequency Pattern. The normative data for children aged 5 to 12 are also reported. A sample was obtained of 217 subjects without ear pathology and with typical development. Each age group was composed of at least 30 children. All children were evaluated using pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, impedance, and otoacoustic emissions. Normative scores are reported for each of the six auditory processing tests. The assessment is applicable to young children (aged 5 and 6). The statistical analyses showed significant effects in scores of Age for all tests and of Ear for several tests. The main result from the work presented, the Auditory Processing Assessment Battery—European Portuguese (BAPA-PE), is available for clinical use with normative data. This battery is a new tool for behaviorism assessment of European Portuguese speakers with suspected central auditory pathology and for monitoring the results of auditory training.
