Isaias, Pedro; kommers, Piet; Issa, TomayessIn the twenty-first century, technology plays an important role to users, businesses and higher education to raise performance, productivity and endorse gratification. Technology usage increased collaboration, cooperation and communication among users as easily as to recapture information, entertainment, marketing, political, health information and online shopping. Integrating Internet and social networking in businesses and higher education will improve business performance, productivity, students’ personal and professional skills, as well as to incorporate sustainability and to corporate social responsibility, triple bottom line and stewardship. This special issue of Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society entitled "Internet Technologies and Society" comprises five papers that present developments in the area of Information Systems (IS) and its applications and contribution within society. More and more technologies have been playing an increased role in society. These papers that reflect the contribution from IS to society, helping to shape the term "Information Society", are extended versions of the original conference papers organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society, chosen by the guest editors of this issue, from the following conferences held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, co-located together, and co-organized by the Universiti Putra Malaysia, and co-sponsored by Curtin Business School-Curtin University, Australia: International Conference on Internet Technologies and Society 2013 (http://www.its-conf.org); International Conference on Educational Technologies 2013 (http://www.icedutech-conf.org); International Conference on Sustainability, Technology and Education 2013 (http://www.sustainability-conf.org).

The guest editors selected these papers from the Internet Technologies and Society 2014, which was held in in Taiwan (http://its-conf.org/). The papers have been extended significantly and peer-reviewed further to achieve a final high publication standard.

The conference papers have been extended significantly and all papers have been peer-reviewed further to achieve a final high publication standard.

The guest editors selected these papers from the Internet Technologies and Society 2017 Conference (ITS 2017) and the International Conference on Educational Technologies 2017 (ICEduTech 2017), which were both held in Sydney, Australia. The selection of the papers was based on their conference version’s reviews and their suitability to the purview of the journal. The original conference papers have been extended significantly and resubmitted to peer review to ensure a high publication standard.

Each contribution reports an original research work in the theme of this special issue –“Challenges of implementing data analytics in productive education systems for supporting cognition and exploratory learning in 21st century”.

The guest editors invited the first paper, selected papers 2–5 from the IADIS 9th International Conference on Internet Technologies & Society 2019 and 6th International Conference on Educational Technologies 2019 which was held in Hong Kong, and included the two last papers, originally submitted to the regular issue, owing to their adequacy to the topics of this special issue. The papers from the conferences have been extended significantly and peer-reviewed further to achieve a final high publication standard.

Issa, Tomayess; Isaias, Pedro; Issa, TheodoraIn December 2019, our lives transformed incessantly, as a new virus – a secret and unknown enemy – named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), interrupted and disturbed the lives of people world-wide. The spread of the secret virus affected and impacted all the sectors including the education. Currently world-wide, the education sector is facing a huge impact as a result of the COVID-19, with universities forced to shift their teaching to e-learning and blended learning modes. Academics have had to adapt to this change, both by way of teaching and the assessment process. This has generated several challenges and opportunities for both academics and students. This special issue aims to investigate, assess and examine academics’ perspectives and perceptions with regard how they have handled this challenge as well as highlighting any opportunities and challenges they have experienced during this period. This new issue will add a new theoretical and practical significance to the e-learning literature review, as currently academics are facing new challenges and opportunities by changing their teaching mode from blend teaching to pure e-learning from the COVID-19. This special issue explored the following themes, namely, teaching mode, e-Learning, blended Learning and collaborative technology. The special issue is comprised of seven papers.
