- Artificial wetlands and their importance for water qualityPublication . Carapeto, Cristina; Purchase, DianeThe efficiency of a constructed wetland to remove Cd, Ni and Pb was studied over a six-month period. The distribution of these metals in the sediments was examined using a sequential extraction method. Results showed that high levels of Cd and Pb were present and that each metal has a characteristic distribution in the sediment. There was a significant difference in the removal efficiency of metals during dry weather and during storm events. Although, the removal of Ni and its distribution did not show any consistent trend, it was evident that a significant amount of Ni was removed during the storm event.

It is currently estimated that an unhealthy diet and a sedentary life may be responsible for over 4 million deaths per year in Europe due to cardiovascular diseases. Although people seem to become aware of what healthy eating means, and healthy eating seems to be regarded positively in terms of benefits by general population this may not be translated into practice. Different studies have demonstrated that there is a low level of perceived need among European population to alter their eating habits for health reasons, mainly because people believe that their diets are already adequately healthy. The current article discusses the major barriers to the adoption of a healthy diet and the main factors that influence individual food choice. Different approaches and actions to be taken for modifying consumer’s food intake in the direction of healthy eating are discussed.

- Fresh produce valuation in Portuguese traditional food markets: consumer perspectivesPublication . Sampaio, J.; Cunha, Luís Miguel; Moura, Ana Pinto de; Rocha, A.In Portugal, traditional food markets have shown a decrease in popularity, mostly because of the growth of organized retailing and increased globalization. Attempts have been made to find what motivates consumers to purchase locally produced foods. The objective of this work was the characterization of consumers from Portuguese traditional food markets, and the identification of their attitudes and perceptions towards those markets. The final aim was to identify opportunities and challenges of traditional food markets’ retailers. Interviews were conducted with consumers at traditional food markets from all over Portugal. One hundred forty-four consumers were asked about their shopping profile, reasons to visit the market, overall degree of satisfaction, as well as socio-economic characteristics. The most bought products on traditional food markets are fresh fruits and vegetables followed by fresh fish and flowers. The main reasons pointed out by consumers to visit these markets are produce freshness (60%) price/quality relationship, i.e., a low price for a certain quality (34%) and the price of traditional products (34%). Moreover, results suggest an overall degree of satisfaction with traditional markets, showing that with an adequate communication strategy more consumers could be allured to them.
- Acceptance of fish and fish products by Portuguese young consumers: an exploratory study based on mothers’ evaluationPublication . Moura, Ana Pinto de; Cunha, Luís Miguel; Azeiteiro, Ulisses; Lima, Rui C.Portugal is one of the major fish consuming countries in the World, from where one may collect experiences in order to improve fish consumption in other countries. The aim of this research is to explore the factors that influence the consumption of fish and seafood among 8-14 year old children from the Oporto metropolitan area. A focus group was conducted with mothers of children to gain insights into their knowledge, attitudes and perceptions regarding the inclusion of fish and fish products as a regular part of their children’s diet. Narrative analysis was conducted based on Bardin content analysis. Findings indicated that children eat fish regularly, integrated into the family meal, and that mothers feel confident about their fish buying and preparation skills, leading them to incorporate fish regularly into family meals, with a choice of tastier easy to eat options.
- Synthetic volume from real optical coherence tomography dataPublication . Serranho, Pedro; Bernardes, Rui; Maduro, Cristina; Santos, Torcato; Cunha-Vaz, JoséPurpose: To build a mathematical model to mimic a real OCT b-scan/volume without noise, in order to establish a ground truth for image processing performance metrics. Methods: Current image processing techniques (eg. despeckling filtering methods) with application to optical coherence tomography (OCT) rely on the respective qualitative evaluation of its results. Quantitative approaches are reduced to using synthetic images which consists of an homogeneous background and a set of abstract objects, eg. cubes and spheres. In this work, we suggest a mathematical model to address this issue by creating a synthetic b-scan/volume based on any real OCT data scan, that can be used as ground truth for processing methods testing. Eye scans of healthy volunteers and eyes of patients with age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy were used following Cirrus OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA) scans using both the 200x200x1024 and the 512x128x1024 Macular Cube Protocols. Each of these eye scans was processed in order to extract required parameters. For healthy subjects, only the segmentation of the inner limiting membrane (ILM) and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are needed, though for pathologic eyes, the segmentation of other structures to be preserved might also be needed. In each segmented region, OCT data is surface fitted using appropriate basis functions. Results: A total of 45 scans were processed resulting in the synthetic data representing the major characteristics of the respective real OCT scans. These results have been used for testing the performance of an improved complex diffusion despeckling method proposed by some of the authors. Conclusions: This process allows to automatically compute a synthetic OCT scan mimicking a real one. In this way, this process makes it possible to quantify the result of any processing (eg. filtering) by providing adequate synthetic data as ground truth.
