- A methodology for electronic business initiatives implementation in SMEPublication . São Mamede, Henrique; Amaral, LuísThe World Wide Web technology, supported on Internet, is transforming all business activities into information-based activities. As a result, one can see a radical change in the traditional theoretical models and organisation. The small and medium enterprises (SME) are the type of enterprises that can reap more advantages with the usage of Internet for electronic business. We found that current methodologies present gaps which make them inadequate and unable to help the small and medium enterprises define an effective strategy and follow an plausible implementation path. This being so, we propose a methodology to support the complete implementation lifecycle of electronic business in small and medium enterprises.

In this article we propose a strategy for the introduction of creativity in the information systems planning in order to build more agile and efficient information systems, allowing therefore more competitive business.
- Separating gesture detection and application control concerns with a multimodal architecturePublication . We propose a concernseparation architecture, which mediates the following concerns: gesture acquisition; gesture recognition; and gestural control. It enables application developers to respond to gesture-independent commands, recognized using plug-in gesture-recognition modules that process gesture data via both device-dependent and deviceindependent data formats and callbacks. Its feasibility is demonstrated with a sample implementation.
- Collaboration in 3D virtual worlds: designing a protocol for case study researchPublication . Cruz, Armando; Paredes, Hugo; Fonseca, Benjamim; Martins, Paulo; Morgado, LeonelThree-dimensional virtual worlds (3DVW) have been growing fast in number of users, and are used for the most diverse purposes. In collaboration, 3DVW are used with good results due to features such as immersion, interaction capabilities, use of avatar embodiment, and physical space. In the particular cases of avatar embodiment and physical space, these features support nonverbal communication, but its impact on collaboration is not well known. In this work we present the initial steps for creation of a protocol for case study research, aiming to assert itself as a tool to collect data on how nonverbal communication influences collaboration in 3DVW. We define the propositions and units of analysis, and a pilot case to validate them.

Dois jogadores interagem como timoneiro de uma nau portuguesa e gigante Adamastor. Um joga em realidade virtual controlada por gestos finos, outro usa aumentação contextual com gestos amplos e fi-nos. Pretende o conceito e o protótipo servirem como exemplificadores das potencialidades das novas formas de interação e de como as concretizar.

We present an exploratory study which analysed the user experience with a multimodal interaction game prototype. As a result, we propose a set of preliminary recommendations for combined use of such devices and present implications for advancing the multimodal field in human-computer interaction.
- A game as a tool for empirical research on the shamanic interface conceptPublication . Pinto, Tiago Susano; Coelho, António; Lukosch, Stephan; Morgado, LeonelA Shamanic Interface is a recent concept that posits that the acknowledgment of culture in gestural commands may contribute to richer and more powerful user interaction with abstract concepts and complexity, but has a lack of empirical validation. Hence, this paper presents a game developed as an empirical research tool for data collection and testing on shamanic interfaces. The game is a small maze where users use gestures to control a character to reach the end of each level. The control gestures performed by each user are captured with a Leap Motion controller and recognized through Hidden Markov Models. Three command sets were implemented: Portuguese cultural gestures, Dutch cultural gestures, and a generic set. This paper evaluates the game with different users to check its playability. We conclude that the game can be used as a research data-collection tool as is, but also acknowledge several playability-related improvement recommendations.
- Requirements for the use of virtual worlds in corporate training : perspectives from the post-mortem of a corporate e-learning provider approach of Second Life and OpenSimulatorPublication . Morgado, Leonel; Paredes, Hugo; Fonseca, Benjamim; Martins, Paulo; Antunes, Ricardo; Moreira, Lúcia; Carvalho, Fausto de; Peixinho, Filipe; Santos, ArnaldoBetween 2009 and 2011, a joint academia-industry effort took place to integrate Second Life and OpenSimulator platforms into a corporate elearning provider’s learning management platform. The process involved managers and lead developers at the provider and an academic engineering research team. We performed content analysis on the documents produced in this process, seeking data on the corporate perspective of requirements for virtual world platforms to be usable in everyday practice. In this paper, we present the requirements found in the documents, and detail how they emerged and evolved throughout the process.
- SimProgramming : the development of an integrated teaching approach for computer programming in higher educationPublication . Pedrosa, Daniela; Cravino, José; Morgado, Leonel; Barreira, Carlos Manuel Folgado; Nunes, Ricardo Rodrigues; Martins, Paulo; Paredes, HugoComputer programming courses in higher education tend to have high rates of academic failure and students struggle, particularly so in the transition from entry-level programming to advanced programming. Some of the reasons given in the literature relate to the type of teaching approach and the strategies used by students and their attitudes towards computer programming. The literature also mentions that educational approaches are not always appropriate to the needs of students and to the development of skills required in the job market. We developed a teaching approach to try to address some of these issues and support students learning computer programming in the transition from entry-level to advanced computer programming: the SimProgramming approach. This approach was introduced at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (Portugal), within the scope of the course “Programming Methodologies III”, part of the second curricular year of the programmes of studies in Informatics Engineering and in Information & Communication Technologies. We present in detail the origins of the SimProgramming approach, starting from the first trials that introduced, in two iterations, learning activities based on problem-based learning, and up to the third iteration where the current SimProgramming approach was implemented. We describe the reasoning, design and implementation of these three iterations, to show how the approach evolved. The SimProgramming approach is based in four conceptual foundations: business-like learning environment, self-regulated learning, co-regulated learning and formative assessment. For each of these conceptual foundations, we explain the teaching strategies adopted. In SimProgramming, the learning activity process develops in four phases, and students have specific tasks in each phase. We analyse interview data regarding student perceptions about the SimProgramming approach, and registration grids data on team work dynamics and final assessment of the assignment, noting the impact of SimProgramming in student grades. The application of SimProgramming revealed promising evidences in the overall results of student learning in the activities proposed in this approach. The average grades improved, and did the number of students regularly submitting their tasks on schedule. The perceptions of students regarding the SimProgramming approach are very positive: they recommend using it in the following years, and provided some suggestions to improve the approach. We conclude with reflections and recommendations for subsequent development of the SimProgramming approach in its application to the teaching of computer programming and potential for using it in other educational contexts.
- Exploração do high fidelity para desenvolvimento de jogos em mundos virtuais imersivos multi utilizadorPublication . Martins, José; Morgado, Leonel; Cardoso, VitorApresentamos o resultado de uma exploração prática da tecnologia de mundos virtuais imersivos multiutilizador High Fidelity, baseada em tecnologia Web. Esta tecnologia permite criar mundos virtuais cujas formas de interligação, controlo e interação tiram partido de uma Interface de Programação de Aplicações em JavaScript. Através do caso prático de desenvolvimento de um protótipo de jogo educativo simples, descrevemos a tecnologia High Fidelity, incluindo o tipo de scripts, a arquitetura inerente e as suas características de desenvolvimento e utilização. Destacamos as dificuldades inerentes ao estado atual da plataforma, em constante reformulação e algumas peculiaridades.
