  • Critical reflections on tourism: phenomenological perspectives on global-South, degrowth and the role of visual aids
Publication . Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Gameiro, Amandine; Duarte, Rogério; Jacquinet, Marc; Pérez, Rafael
From a critical phenomenology perspective, it is possible to interpret tourism as an open arena where different players interact, thus illustrating the rationale behind their epistemic positioning. Tourism, as an economic sector, is both a product and a producer of what is happening at global level. This to-and-from mutual determinations may be exemplified by visual aids that help to map the conceptual models that shape scientific debate. The research objective of the present study is to critically explore the theoretical potential of the global-South paradigm in order to bring a better understanding of tourism, illuminating the creative tensions that are shaping this dynamic, complex, multifactorial and structuring sector. The global-South paradigm involves degrowth theories and other non-orthodox economic perspectives that determine how cities, communities and territories manage their symbolic and intangible heritage that, in turn, determine decision-making, political debate and, ultimately, the living conditions of their population. The contribution of the present research is to draw together a plethora of academic schools of thought that may help to critically identify the active forces in the tourism sector. The goal is not to offer detailed scientific evidence of the social, economic and political strains in tourism but to indicate and to highlight the potential that is already there to be explored in open reflection and in theoretical incursions, contributing to expand the horizons of thought and action of contemporary societies.

  • “Three white men walk into a bar” – TQM’s vanguard pluralistic intersectionality and Maine de Biran’s open-process
Publication . Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Duarte, Rogério; Gameiro, Amandine; Almeida, Fernando; Jacquinet, Marc; Lima, Miguel
In the rich, educated and industrialised world, with high levels of concentration of technology, Total Quality Management has successfully allowed industries, organizations and institutions to gradually adapt to the new circumstances of the past 20th century, including the gradual transition from industry-based societies to a focus on services. In the 21st century, facing the radical changes in contemporary societies, and the necessary responses to the double challenge of growing economic inequality and the rapid deterioration of environmental conditions, a test that is already being faced by avant-garde institutions, especially designed to promote exploratory, provisional, and heuristic, trial-and-error actions.
  • Visually supported curriculum development
Publication . Duarte, Rogério; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Jacquinet, Marc; Pimentel, Fernando
Curriculum development processes are of paramount importance for the preparation of future professionals. An impediment to these processes lays in stakeholders’ communication difficulties. This study considers the combination of information and data science techniques namely, the use of classification, natural language processing and network graphs, to make curriculum representations self-explanatory, bridging communication gaps and helping stakeholders to articulate their expert knowledge.
  • Broader terms curriculum mapping: using natural language processing and visual-supported communication to create representative program planning experiences
Publication . Duarte, Rogério; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Pimentel, Fernando; Jacquinet, Marc
Accreditation bodies call for curriculum development processes that are open to all stakeholders, reflecting viewpoints of students, industry, university faculty, and society. However, communication difficulties between faculty and non-faculty groups leave an immense collaboration potential unexplored. Using the classification of learning objectives, natural language processing, and data visualization, this paper presents a quantitative method that delivers program plan representations that are universal, self-explanatory, and empowering; promoting stronger links between program courses and curriculum development open to all stakeholders. A simple example shows how the method contributes to representative program planning experiences and a case study is used to confirm the method’s accuracy and utility.

  • Ferramenta de apoio ao desenvolvimento curricular
Publication .
  • Rethinking curriculum development through design thinking
Publication . Duarte, Rogério; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Pimentel, Fernando; Jacquinet, Marc
Higher education institutions must be aware of the transformations that occur in societies in order to innovate and to offer revised educational curricula. Design Thinking is a tool that helps to foster innovation in business contexts. Could this methodology be used in higher education for curriculum development? The present article considers this question by presenting the Design Thinking methodology, establishing links with outcome based education, constructive alignment principles, and discussing the context specific to higher education institutions.
  • Corporate social responsibility and management in a glocal context
Publication . Silva, Maria; Jacquinet, Marc; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a recurrent and global concept used by international and local corporations, with its supporters, skeptics, and critics. It is also a growing area of concern and practice for businesses for answering the challenges of the present century, such as fighting poverty or promoting sustainable development goals. There is need—almost consensual—for clarifying the impact and the policy setting related to complex areas, such as climate change, environmental issues, social responsibility and a whole array of ethical issues, at global and at the local level (i.e., through an unavoidable glocal perspective). The purpose of this chapter is, first, to review the literature and the main issues related to corporate social responsibility; second, to identify the current challenges this scientific area is facing; and, third, to pinpoint its relevance at the level of the digital economy setting, for the management of the emergent business models and of the information systems management of businesses.
