- Machine learning in software defined networks: data collection and traffic classificationPublication . Amaral, Pedro; Dinis, João; Pinto, Paulo; Bernardo, Luís; Tavares, João; São Mamede, HenriqueSoftware Defined Networks (SDNs) provides a separation between the control plane and the forwarding plane of networks. The software implementation of the control plane and the built in data collection mechanisms of the OpenFlow protocol promise to be excellent tools to implement Machine Learning (ML) network control applications. A first step in that direction is to understand the type of data that can be collected in SDNs and how information can be learned from that data. In this work we describe a simple architecture deployed in an enterprise network that gathers traffic data using the OpenFlow protocol. We present the data-sets that can be obtained and show how several ML techniques can be applied to it for traffic classification. The results indicate that high accuracy classification can be obtained with the data-sets using supervised learning.

- Enabling distributed SMEPublication . Trovao, Hugo; São Mamede, Henrique; Silva, Miguel Mira daIn some industries, recruiting qualified resources can be a problem for SMEs, one option is to start a transformation process, and move from a traditional team to a distributed team, gaining access to a much larger base of possible human resources and business opportunities. Digital transformation can be used to help SMEs in taking the steps needed to become distributed companies. This paper shows how applying a lightweight TOGAF-based methodology to an ongoing digital transformation process, specifically targeting a SME information system, can create opportunities for the company.
- Predictive industrial maintenance with a viable systems model and maintenance 4.0Publication . Camara, Rafael Albuquerque; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor Duarte dosIn face of the continuously growing process of the fourth industrial revolution, the industries are forced to innovate their industrial manufacturing process to remain competitive and active in the market, perfecting the manufacturing process through new interconnected and autonomous technologies. Since time reduction, quality enhancement and cost reduction for manufacturing of industrial products are the major catalysts of a successful company for the current Era called Maintenance 4.0, this paper proposes to illustrate an Information Systems Architecture where, using the Viable Systems Model, it is possible to perform automatic adjustments in the subsystems related to Cyber-Physical Systems and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) within the Digital Manufacturing model and, in addition, to mitigate machine failures through predictive analyzes of massive volumes of data using algorithms with intelligent functions and Data Mining (DM) in order to automatically stabilize the entire system chain quickly and efficiently.
- Research priorities in immersive learning technology: the perspectives of the iLRN communityPublication . Gaspar, Horácio; Morgado, Leonel; São Mamede, Henrique; Oliveira, Teresa; Fernandez-Manjon, Baltasar; Gütl, ChristianThis paper presents the perspectives of the immersive learning research network community on the relevance of various challenges to the adoption of immersive learning technology, along three dimensions: access, content production, and deployment. Using a previously validated questionnaire, we surveyed this community of 622 researchers and practitioners during the summer of 2018, attaining 54 responses. By ranking the challenges individually and within each dimension, the results point towards higher relevance being placed on aspects that link immersive environments with learning management systems and pedagogical tasks, alongside aspects that empower non-technical users (educational actors) to produce interactive stories, objects, and characters.
- Viable system architecture applied to maintenance 4.0Publication . Câmara, Rafael Albuquerque; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor Duarte dosDisruptive requirements that currently drive the so-called Industry 4.0 (I4.0) are increasingly present in today's industries, where factories are forced to innovate in search of improvement in the quality of manufacturing of products aligned with the reductions of: manufacturing time, environmental and cost impacts with the manufacturing process. For this, an Information Systems (IS) architecture is proposed to reduce the negative impacts on an industrial operation caused by manual configuration failures in manufacturing systems, machines that are worn out in the production process and unstable integrations between industrial subsystems. The suggested SI model uses the Viable Systems Model adapted to Maintenance 4.0 technologies (Cyber-physical Systems (CPS), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Data Mining and Digital Manufacturing concepts/technologies) with the goal to create an automatic purchase flow to replace parts by mitigating impending failures in industrial equipment through data mining and predictive analysis.
