  • Creativity in prototypes design: the case of social organizations
Publication . Silveira, Clara; Santos, Vitor; Reis, Leonilde; São Mamede, Henrique
The role of creativity techniques in the design of prototypes is of particular interest given its potential for innovation. At same time, despite the efforts of decades in terms of policies and programs of action, humanity has not yet come close to global sustainability. Sustainability design must involve society and creatively employ all available knowledge sources for creating sustainable software. This paper proposes a prototype design approach rooted in employing creativity techniques, while being guided by the dimensions and principles of the Karlskrona Manifesto. This approach is applied to the development of a multidisciplinary aggregator for the optimization of social services. As a result. guidelines for the use of creativity in requirements engineering will be presented, as well as on how to include sustainability issues, namely the Sustainable Development Goals and the five dimensions of sustainability in the design of prototypes.
  • Management model and capture of benefits integrated into the practice of project management
Publication . Almeida, André; Santos, Carolina; São Mamede, Henrique; Malta, Pedro; Santos, Vitor
An attempt has been made to address the difficulty of identifying and measuring the benefits derived from investment projects and capturing capital gains for an organization, focusing on developing and implementing a management model and realizing benefits for a leading company in its activity sector. Thus, the objective is to understand how it is possible to achieve the expected benefits of an investment project: A model characterized as generalist was developed (applied to all areas of the company), with the objective of optimizing the realization of benefits, measuring them and thus create value for the organization. Among the methods used, we highlight, in a first phase, the research of some existing Frameworks, which later enabled the development of a proposed framework, validated internally using the existing Business Intelligence platform. Subsequently, based on a satisfaction questionnaire about the framework proposed to users, data related to its development and implementation were collected, with the aim of understanding its acceptance among the users and employees of the company. With the data from this questionnaire, an artifact was developed: a PowerBI dashboard that reflects the benefits identified and captured. In summary, the artifact made it possible to identify, measure, and achieve the benefits generated by the project in question, but also to motivate its use in other existing investment projects, by adapting it to each of the other ones.
  • An integrated approach using robotic process automation and artificial intelligence as disruptive technology for digital transformation
Publication . Araújo, Anderson; São Mamede, Henrique; Filipe, Vítor; Santos, Vitor
Digital transformation is a phenomenon arising from social, behavioral and habitual changes due to global economic and technological development. Its main characteristic is adopting disruptive digital technologies by organizations to transform their capabilities, structures, processes and business model components. One of the disruptive digital technologies used in organizations’ digital transformation process is Robotic Process Automation. However, the use of Robotic Process Automation is limited by several constraints that affect its reliability and increase the cost. Artificial Intelligence techniques can improve some of these constraints. The use of Robotic Process Automation combined with Artificial Intelligence capabilities is called Hyperautomation. However, there is a lack of solutions that successfully integrate both technologies in the context of digital transformation. This work proposes an integrated approach using Robotic Process Automation and Artificial Intelligence as disruptive Hyperautomation technology for digital transformation.
  • Clarification of the present understanding of the assessment of an organization’s digital readiness in SMEs
Publication . Silva, Rui; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor
The role of digital transformation (DT) in economic development is a vital and recurring point of research. It is particularly relevant if we consider the high percentage of digital transformation initiatives that fail to deliver the expected results, particularly in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This paper analyzes what is needed to make this transformation successful from an implementation perspective and, simultaneously, from the standpoint of obtaining the company’s expected results. This phenomenon is even more critical to decipher and understand when we look at the small and medium enterprises that face more significant challenges due to the scarcity of resources and needed skills. This work reviews a large variety of models through an extensive systematic literature review (SLR) that assess the readiness and maturity of the digital transformation of enterprises, with a focus on SMEs, with its primary objectives being (1) to review the existing studies and models that assess an organization’s maturity and readiness in the context of digital transformation, focusing on SMEs; (2) to identify if there are gaps considering the importance of the SMEs; and (3) to propose a standardized set of dimensions that should always be considered in a digital transformation assessment. The outcome of this research provides an essential contribution by identifying apparent gaps in the assessment of digital transformation in SMEs and proposing a scalable and standardized set of categories and subcategories that can be used across any future assessment model. These contributions are even more relevant when referencing minimal deep research in the context of SMEs and Digital Transformation.
  • Architecture for a creative information system
Publication . São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor
Considering that the capacity to innovate is increasingly becoming a decisive factor in the competition between organisations, the study and conception of systems that help the birth of new ideas, products and solutions is rising in importance. In this article, the authors consider the concept of Creative Information Systems and present a proposal for the development of architecture for such a system based on the creative technique of brute thinking.
  • Information technologies in social entrepreneurship
Publication . Esteves, Vera; Malta, Pedro; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor
Social organizations are usually subject to a high number of requests. In addition, it deals with a variety of problems to which an answer is needed. In this context, it is important to understand how these organizations can better support their process activity: Can technologies help to solve the problems of social orga- nizations in a more efficient way, bringing greater benefits to the community? This paper presents a study on the use of information technologies in Portuguese social organizations to meet the needs of these organizations in responding to current challenges.
  • Reference model for academic results certification in student mobility scenarios: position paper
Publication . Cardoso, Sergio; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor
The exchange of academic marks between HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) is mandatory in every student mobility programs (i.e. the EU Erasmus Program) but that process remains to present date with insufficient technological support and the absence of a comprehensive reference model that allows the integration of potential technological solutions for the exchange of academic data with existing Academic Information Systems seems to limit greatly the possibility of adopting solutions of this type referred to in the existing literature. This work addresses this issue, conducting an initial bibliographic review aimed at the identification of the fundamental requirements of such an architecture as well as explores some of the technologies that are showing potential for usage in the safe exchange of academic results between partner HEIs, with particular interest in blockchain technology applied in an educational context.

  • A reference model for artificial intelligence techniques in stimulating reasoning, and cognitive and motor development
Publication . Santos, Vitor; São Mamede, Henrique; Silveira, Clara; Reis, Leonilde
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being discussed as something essential and pressing in all aspects and areas of society. Its potential use in education is no exception. Artificial Intelligence, in particular, and technologies, in general, are unavoidable elements to be considered in the teaching-learning process at all levels of education and training. There are many initiatives, essentially exploratory in nature, for the application of Artificial Intelligence in this process. Therefore, it is imperative to understand how they can be used for this purpose and how they relate to pedagogical methods. In the present study, and within this context, we address how Artificial Intelligence can be used in software to support cognitive and motor development and stimulate reasoning. We propose a reference model for techniques for this purpose. Concrete cases of existing applications are presented to better illustrate the potential of Artificial Intelligence in education.
  • Developing a computer system prototype to support aphasia rehabilitation
Publication . Nogueira, Nuno; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor; Malta, Pedro Maia; Santos, Carolina
The purpose of this study is to describe the construction process and the evidence of content validity of SCARA, a prototype of a technological system to support language and communication rehabilitation in people with aphasia, providing a tool that serves both patients and health professionals who accompany the respec- tive recovery process. The process followed four stages: internal phase of the program’s organization, with research in the literature and analysis of the materials available in the Portuguese market; construction of the SCARA prototype; evaluation by experts; and data analysis. A Content Validity Index was calculated to determine the level of agreement between the experts. The level of agreement between experts showed the validity of SCARA. SCARA has shown to help the work of the speech-language pathologist and persons with aphasia, contributing to a higher therapeutic quality, enhancing linguistic recovery, and compensating for the impossibility of direct support more frequently and/or prolonged intervention.
