- Clarification of the present understanding of the assessment of an organization’s digital readiness in SMEsPublication . Silva, Rui; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, VitorThe role of digital transformation (DT) in economic development is a vital and recurring point of research. It is particularly relevant if we consider the high percentage of digital transformation initiatives that fail to deliver the expected results, particularly in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This paper analyzes what is needed to make this transformation successful from an implementation perspective and, simultaneously, from the standpoint of obtaining the company’s expected results. This phenomenon is even more critical to decipher and understand when we look at the small and medium enterprises that face more significant challenges due to the scarcity of resources and needed skills. This work reviews a large variety of models through an extensive systematic literature review (SLR) that assess the readiness and maturity of the digital transformation of enterprises, with a focus on SMEs, with its primary objectives being (1) to review the existing studies and models that assess an organization’s maturity and readiness in the context of digital transformation, focusing on SMEs; (2) to identify if there are gaps considering the importance of the SMEs; and (3) to propose a standardized set of dimensions that should always be considered in a digital transformation assessment. The outcome of this research provides an essential contribution by identifying apparent gaps in the assessment of digital transformation in SMEs and proposing a scalable and standardized set of categories and subcategories that can be used across any future assessment model. These contributions are even more relevant when referencing minimal deep research in the context of SMEs and Digital Transformation.
- When in Memeland, speak in memes: contributions of design towards the betterment of online behavior regarding public healthPublication . Alvelos, Heitor; Pereira, J. F. B.; Chatterjee, Abhishek; Barreto, Susana; Lima, Cláudia; Santiago, Eliana; Veiga, Pedro Alves daThis research tackles a current tendency towards scientific mistrust among segments of the population: we posit that channels traditionally employed by scientists and policy-makers may not be sufficient to reach skeptical individuals and communities, as exponentially and pervasively evident in social media circles. We thus propose to explore informal online channels and formats such as memes, short videos, and forums, where the involved demographics tend to obtain information they deem reliable and relatable: in fact, formal channels of scientific communication are often regarded by skeptics as authoritarian and driven by obscure agendas. In this research, we focus on health policy behavior as a locus of conflict in recent years due to the pandemic, with Portugal as a case study. Informed by both online field work and in-person interviews with health policy skeptics, the project has so far produced a collection of visual artifacts for social media circulation. Validated specimens aim to become templates for the adoption of health policies.
- Visions of ecological transition in Europe: comparing perceptions, unveiling pluralityPublication . Vidal, Diogo Guedes; Alves, Fátima; Freitas, Helena; Habuda-Stanić, MirnaThe wide dissemination of the Ecological transition concept, without the integration of different views, understandings and constraints, could undermine the collective efforts to pursue it. Therefore, in the scope of the H2020 European project “PHOENIX”, this work aims to contribute to providing different visions on Ecological Transition across 6 European countries – Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Hungary and Estonia - through the application of 41 interviews with policymakers, scientists, NGO actors, representatives of economics groups and citizens. From the interviews, it was clear that the adoption of pro-ecological behaviors is not only dependent on individual choices – lack of awareness or giving up on personal comfort. The interviewees highlight the financial barriers as the main constraints – both at an individual level and the macro level, i.e. the economic interests of companies -, as well as the lack of support of institutions as role models in this ecological transition. More importantly, a general perception of the ineffectiveness of traditional participation models was visible, limiting the possibility of intervention, especially for vulnerable social groups. People want to make part of this transition, but this can only be achieved through mechanisms of participation grounded in fair, inclusive and plural processes. The transformative policy postulated by the ecological transition must be based on in-depth knowledge of the biophysical and socio-economic-cultural characteristics of territories, which is a prerequisite that requires transformative processes at individual and structural levels.
