  • Assessment of organizational readiness for digital transformation in SMEs
Publication . Silva, Rui Pedro; Saraiva, Célia; São Mamede, Henrique
Finding the right strategy enabled by a solid digital transformation is a key challenge that Small and Medium Enterprises face. With a high number of transformations that fail, there is a significant investment in research to identify critical factors that ultimately drive a more successful journey, and at the same time, quite a few different models to assess the digital transformation maturity. There is, however, a gap in assessing how ready a SME is, to successfully embrace the transformation, and an even bigger gap in assessing it from employee’s perspective. This work is proposing a model to assess that readiness. The organizational readiness assessment aims to enable SMEs to better understand the foundations that need to be set, to successfully deliver the transformation. A user-friendly model that assesses the non-technological aspects of an organization, from the employee ́s perspective, indicating the clear gaps that ultimately might negatively impact the future of the organization when digitally transforming.
  • Enabling distributed SME
Publication . Trovao, Hugo; São Mamede, Henrique; Silva, Miguel Mira da
In some industries, recruiting qualified resources can be a problem for SMEs, one option is to start a transformation process, and move from a traditional team to a distributed team, gaining access to a much larger base of possible human resources and business opportunities. Digital transformation can be used to help SMEs in taking the steps needed to become distributed companies. This paper shows how applying a lightweight TOGAF-based methodology to an ongoing digital transformation process, specifically targeting a SME information system, can create opportunities for the company.
  • Learning analytics to close the gap in digital literacy of SMEs
Publication . Silva, Rui Pedro; São Mamede, Henrique
To transform an organization, it isn’t possible to ignore the people aspect and the significant impact of talent development in any transformation process. While in larger organizations, there is often access to more resources that ultimately could bring the needed competencies to successfully run such a complex program, in small or medium enterprises, the resources are more limited and the access to talent more difficult, forcing a potential more aggressive strategy in developing the digital skills needed to enable their transformation. This work aims to review some of the literature and better comprehend the role of learning analytics as a practice that could potentially be used to enhance the learning process within Small and Medium Enterprises and support the improvement of digital literacy within these companies.
  • Transforming physical enterprise into a remote organization: transformation impact: digital tools, processes and people
Publication . Saraiva, Celia; São Mamede, Henrique; Silveira, Maria Clara; Nunes, Marco
This paper aims to define a problem to be studied and summarize previous research work done. Remote work or telework enterprise model has been a growing trend. The Covid-19 pandemic forced businesses to adopt a temporary remote-working mode. Now managers are investigating whether this “new” working-mode is, or not, a better approach than the traditional working mode known as the “office model”. The proposed framework will support the transformation process from a physical into a remote work model supported by applying digital tools and methods. Furthermore, the framework proposed in this work aims to help business decision makers to decide which organizational model they should adopt after Covid-19: full-remote; “hybrid” or partially remote; or physical, also known as “going back to the office”. A simple and pragmatic framework is proposed to help organizations: understand if it’s possible to transform a business from a physical (“at the office”) to a full or partial remote model; define the main goals of this transformation; create a simple template to map the new digital enterprise architecture in terms of tools, data management, business processes and human resources (job functions and digital skills).
  • Business process automation in SMEs
Publication . Moreira, Silvia; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Arnaldo
Business Process Automation has been gaining increasing im- portance in the management of companies and organizations since it reduces the time needed to carry out routine tasks, freeing employees for other more crea- tive and exciting things. The use of process automation seems to be a growing trend in the business's operational restructuring, combined with digital trans- formation. It can be applied in the most varied business areas. Organizations from any sector of activity can also adopt it. Given these benefits, the granted success in transforming business processes would be expected. However, 30 to 50% of automation initiatives with Robotic Process Automation technology fail. In this work, a set of guidelines will be proposed that will constitute, after validation, a framework capable of guiding organizations, with a focus on SMEs, in the procedure of automating their processes, thus obtaining the maxi- mum return of this transformation.
  • The software architecture driving a successful digital transformation within small and medium enterprises
Publication . Silva, Rui Pedro; São Mamede, Henrique
The process of transforming an organization to face the new digital challenges, is a complex topic, and several research lines have been studying the different factors that might have a significant impact in delivering it with a higher success rate. We haven´t found yet, a clear success formula, although great progress has been noted over the past years in this field. The transformation of a small or medium enterprise isn´t necessarily the same process of a larger enterprise, especially due to more limitations in available resources and digital literacy. Common practices such as Software Architecture are widely used in larger organizations, this work aims to review some of the literature and better comprehend the role of software architecture as a possible mechanism to improve the digital transformation within small and medium businesses.
  • Clarification of the present understanding of the assessment of an organization’s digital readiness in SMEs
Publication . Silva, Rui; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Vitor
The role of digital transformation (DT) in economic development is a vital and recurring point of research. It is particularly relevant if we consider the high percentage of digital transformation initiatives that fail to deliver the expected results, particularly in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This paper analyzes what is needed to make this transformation successful from an implementation perspective and, simultaneously, from the standpoint of obtaining the company’s expected results. This phenomenon is even more critical to decipher and understand when we look at the small and medium enterprises that face more significant challenges due to the scarcity of resources and needed skills. This work reviews a large variety of models through an extensive systematic literature review (SLR) that assess the readiness and maturity of the digital transformation of enterprises, with a focus on SMEs, with its primary objectives being (1) to review the existing studies and models that assess an organization’s maturity and readiness in the context of digital transformation, focusing on SMEs; (2) to identify if there are gaps considering the importance of the SMEs; and (3) to propose a standardized set of dimensions that should always be considered in a digital transformation assessment. The outcome of this research provides an essential contribution by identifying apparent gaps in the assessment of digital transformation in SMEs and proposing a scalable and standardized set of categories and subcategories that can be used across any future assessment model. These contributions are even more relevant when referencing minimal deep research in the context of SMEs and Digital Transformation.
  • The role of digital marketing in increasing SMEs' competitiveness
Publication . Silva, Rui Pedro; São Mamede, Henrique; Santos, Arnaldo
With the significant increase of technology-based newer competitors and the digital economy reshaping the global economic environment, it is undoubtful that the market is becoming aggressively more demanding for small and medium enterprises, which is a strong driver of their need to adopt new digital technologies and transform their businesses.
