- An algorithm to condense social networks and identify brokersPublication . Cavique, Luís; Marques, Nuno C.; Santos, Jorge M. A.In social network analysis the identification of communities and the discovery of brokers is a very important issue. Community detection typically uses partition techniques. In this work the information extracted from social networking goes beyond cohesive groups, enabling the discovery of brokers that interact between communities. The partition is found using a set covering formulation, which allows the identification of actors that link two or more dense groups. Our algorithm returns the needed information to create a good visualization of large networks, using a condensed graph with the identification of the brokers.
- An approach to GDPR based on object role modelingPublication . Gonçalves, António; Correia, Anacleto; Cavique, LuísThe General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) is a set of legal rules to attain the privacy of people in the handling of their personal data and the movement of such data across countries. When those rules are considered in the operation of information systems, the one becomes attainable for legal approval within that scope. This paper presents a model we are developing to help enterprises do align their information system with the GDPR requirements. The model shall serve the purpose of analyzing the enterprises in what concerns the use of the subject’s personal data, allowing to capture and improve data protection capabilities placed in the GDPR. The main issue of our approach is to set a baseline to define the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving data protection management system on organizations.
- Aquarium as a tool for teaching sciences at all grades levelsPublication . Seixas, Sónia; Martinho, Marco
- ARK: augmented reality kioskPublication . Pereira, Pedro; Matos, Nuno; Marcos, AdéritoThis paper aims at presenting a very first prototype of an Augmented Reality (AR) system that as been developed in recent months at our research group. The prototype adopts a kiosk format and allows users to directly interact with an AR environment using a conventional data glove. The most relevant feature of this environment is the use of a common monitor to display AR images, instead of employing specific Head-Mounted Displays. By integrating a half-silvered mirror and a black virtual hand, our solution solves the occlusion problem that normally occurs when a user interacts with a virtual environment displayed by a monitor or other projection system.
- Attitudes, barriers and motivators as factors for sustainability of higher education e-Learning programmes at Universidade Aberta, PortugalPublication . Nicolau, Paula Bacelar; Caeiro, Sandra; Martinho, Ana Paula; Azeiteiro, UlissesIn higher education distance learning institutions, where studies are carried on through a variety of distance learning regimes, from the correspondence and earlier forms of distance education to fully online e-learning programmes, and where planners and administrators seize the effective adoption and deployment of technology-enabled education, student attitude and motivation assume considerable significance. Attitudinal pre-dispositions, institutional and allied barriers (including appropriate policy initiatives), besides the scientific and pedagogical quality of degree programmes are assumed to play a crucial role in sustainability of higher education systems. This article reports the findings of a study conducted at Universidade Aberta, Portugal—the Portuguese Distance Learning Education University—to examine student attitudes towards e-learning and to identify barriers and motivators of e-learning adoption, which are key factors for decreasing dropout rates of a 2nd cycle degree e-learning programme, analysed as a case study.
- Axiomatic design applied to CRUD matrix in information systemsPublication . Cavique, Luís; Cavique, MiguelIn Information Systems (IS), the search for a good design is still a relevant issue. In IS, two sub-systems coexist, applications and data. To articulate these sub-systems, some authors opt for the CRUD matrix. Similarly, Axiomatic Design (AD) theory studies how functional requirements are related to design parameters using a design matrix. In this paper, the application sub-system corresponds to the functional requirements, the data sub-system to the design parameters, and the CRUD matrix to the design matrix. The goal of the CRUD matrix is to maintain the independence of its items to minimize the information content of the design. Similarly, AD uses the design matrix to define a good design. This work aims to develop a theory to create object-oriented elements based on the CRUD matrix aligned with the business strategy.
- BIZZY : a social game for entrepreneurship educationPublication . Fonseca, Benjamim; Gonçalves, Ramiro Manuel Ramos Moreira; Nunes, Ricardo Rodrigues; Teixeira, Mário Sérgio; Paredes, Hugo; Morgado, Leonel; Martins, PauloEntrepreneurship education is increasingly being promoted, driven by a wide consensus in modern societies concerning its benefits in fostering the development of several professional and personal attitudes and skills, such as business expertise, creativity, risk assessment or responsibility. In this context, several authorities have been actively developing policies and activities to empower entrepreneurship culture in young people. Serious Games are recognized as having an important role and potential in education and social networks emerged in the last decade as the platform preferred by many people to socialize, play games or conduct professional activities. This paper presents a proposal for BIZZY, a serious game to be developed and implemented as a Facebook application, to enable young people in the range 12-18 years old to learn entrepreneurial skills progressively, by guiding them to develop a business project from the early idea to the business plan.
- Black trail in blue oceansPublication . Carapeto, CristinaTourism, as an industry, has been increasing in recent years. The cruise industry might be the best example. Huge ships cross the oceans, offering luxury and amenities to thousands of people. They are real floating cities with short stops at several places where tourists disembark and invade historical areas and fragile ecosystems, taking great pleasure from the contact with different cultures and exotic environments. The cost of this growing industry that is available to only a few is paid by us all with the decrease in the quality of the air and the damage that is inflicted on the oceans. It is therefore urgent to know the true environmental cost of this type of tourism and reflect on choices. It is possible to have both (cruises and environmental quality) as long as regulations are implemented and people moderate their behaviour.
- Bringing underused learning objects to the light: a multi-agent based approachPublication . Behr, André; Cscalho, José; Mendes, Armando B.; Guerra, Hélia; Cavique, Luís; Trigo, Paulo; Coelho, Helder; Vicari, RosaThe digital learning transformation brings the extension of the traditional libraries to online repositories. Learning object repositories are employed to deliver several functionalities related to the learning object’s lifecycle. However, these educational resources usually are not described effectively, lacking, for example, educational metadata and learning goals. Then, metadata incompleteness limits the quality of the services, such as search and recommendation, resulting in educational objects that do not have a proper role in teaching/learning environments. This work proposes to bring an active role to all educational resources, acting on the analysis generated from the usage statistics. To achieve this goal, we created a multi-agent architecture that complements the common repository’s functionalities to improve learning and teaching experiences. We intend to use this architecture on a repository focused on ocean literacy learning objects. This paper presents some steps toward this goal by enhancing, when needed, the repository to adapt itself.
- Clique communities in social networksPublication . Cavique, Luís; Mendes, Armando B.; Santos, Jorge M. A.Given the large amount of data provided by the Web 2.0, there is a pressing need to obtain new metrics to better understand the network structure; how their communities are organized and the way they evolve over time. Complex network and graph mining metrics are essentially based on low complexity computational procedures like the diameter of the graph, clustering coefficient and the degree distribution of the nodes. The connected communities in the social networks have, essentially, been studied in two contexts: global metrics like the clustering coefficient and the node groups, such as the graph partitions and clique communities.
