- Artificial intelligence in recruitment: a multivocal review of benefits, challenges, and strategiesPublication . Trovão, Hugo; São Mamede, Henrique; Trigo, Paulo; Santos, VitorThis study investigates the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in recruitment, with a specific emphasis on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and cultural diversity, two dimensions frequently underrepresented in existing research. The objective is to evaluate the benefits, challenges, and strategies for the responsible adoption of AI in recruitment. To achieve this, a Multivocal Literature Review (MLR) was conducted, systematically synthesising peer-reviewed studies and grey literature published from 2018 onwards. Following Kitchenham’s systematic review guidelines and Garousi’s multivocal extensions, academic and practitioner perspectives were analysed to capture both theoretical insights and real-world practices. The findings indicate that AI can streamline recruitment processes, improve decision-making accuracy, and enhance candidate experience through tools such as résumé screening, predictive analytics, and generative AI applications. However, issues of algorithmic bias, limited transparency, data quality, regulatory compliance, and workforce scepticism persist, particularly in SMEs that face resource constraints. Although much of the available evidence reflects Western contexts, this review broadens the scope by integrating global perspectives and highlighting how cultural and regional factors influence AI acceptance. The novelty of this study lies in combining academic and industry evidence to propose actionable strategies—such as bias audits, explainable AI frameworks, and human-in-the-loop approaches—for more inclusive, sustainable, and globally relevant adoption of AI in recruitment.
- Educational practices and strategies with immersive learning environments: mapping of reviews for using the metaversePublication . Beck, Dennis; Morgado, Leonel; O'shea, PatrickThe educational metaverse promises fulfilling ambitions of immersive learning, leveraging technology-based presence alongside narrative and/or challenge-based deep mental absorption. Most reviews of immersive learning research were outcomes-focused, few considered the educational practices and strategies. These are necessary to provide theoretical and pedagogical frameworks to situate outcomes within a context where technology is in concert with educational approaches. We sought a broader perspective of the practices and strategies used in immersive learning environments, and conducted a mapping survey of reviews, identifying 47 studies. Extracted accounts of educational practices and strategies under thematic analysis yielded 45 strategies and 21 practices, visualized as a network clustered by conceptual proximity. Resulting clusters “Active context”, “Collaboration”, “Engagement and Scaffolding”, “Presence”, and “Real and virtual multimedia learning” expose the richness of practices and strategies within the field. The visualization maps the field, supporting decision-making when combining practices and strategies for using the metaverse in education, highlights which practices and strategies are supported by the literature, and the presence and absence of diversity within clusters.
- Finding the gaps about uses of immersive learning environments: a survey of surveysPublication . Beck, Dennis; Morgado, Leonel; O'shea, PatrickAdvancing the field of research in Immersive Learning Environments requires avoiding the pitfalls of previous educational technologies. Studies must consider the actual use of these environments and the context where it occurs, not simply the technocentric perspectives on these environments. This paper provides an overview and analysis of surveys on this topic, in order to map the field and find out which information on actual uses of Immersive Learning Environments are reported, and hence which gaps need to be covered towards a robust, encompassing knowledge on their relationship with learning. Collected accounts of use were clustered via thematic analysis and contrasted with research areas in learning and technology, highlighting the gaps in the field and serving as a blueprint for research agendas on uses of immersive learning environments.

- Research priorities in immersive learning technology: the perspectives of the iLRN communityPublication . Gaspar, Horácio; Morgado, Leonel; São Mamede, Henrique; Fernandez-Manjon, Baltasar; Gütl, Christian; Oliveira, Teresa A.This paper presents the perspectives of the immersive learning research network community on the relevance of various challenges to the adoption of immersive learning technology, along three dimensions: access, content production, and deployment. Using a previously validated questionnaire, we surveyed this community of 622 researchers and practitioners during the summer of 2018, attaining 54 responses. By ranking the challenges individually and within each dimension, the results point towards higher relevance being placed on aspects that link immersive environments with learning management systems and pedagogical tasks, alongside aspects that empower non-technical users (educational actors) to produce interactive stories, objects, and characters.
