- An on-line teacher training course on education for sustainability: assessment of open (mooc) and closed versions of the coursePublication . Caeiro, Sandra; Paz, João; Carmo, MárioThis paper reports the experience of a first edition of an on-line teacher training course on education for sustainability both for open (MOOC) and closed versions, and the respective assessment. The course was implemented by the Portuguese Distance Learning University (Universidade Aberta – UAb) under a protocol with the General Secretariat of Education and Science of the Portuguese State in an Open EdX platform (NAU). The results show that the planning, preparation of own materials suitable for the target audience and the validation of this type of open/massive and certified closed courses by different actors, before the course taking place is fundamental. It was also confirmed by the positive participation and feedback from the participants. In addition, the collaborative component in both course versions were fundamental to ensure success in this type of training actions. Differences in both versions were discussed as well as recommendations for future editions.
- Multi-layer stream mapping as a combined approach for industrial processes eco-efficiency assessmentPublication . Lourenço, E. J.; Baptista, A .J.; Pereira, J. P.; Ferreira, Célia
- A new approach to soil remediation: coupling nanotechnology with electrically induced particle transport (Electrokinetics)Publication . Gomes, H.; Ferreira, Célia; Ribeiro, A. B.; Loch, G.; Ottosen, Lisbeth M.Traditional remediation technologies for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) such as Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) have serious limitations and high costs. Zero valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) represent a new generation of environmental remediation technologies that could provide cost-effective solutions. However, the limited transport of nZVI through soils has been identified to be a major drawback for in situ applications. The main research objective of this study is to find out if coupling electrokinetics and reactive iron nanoparticles can be an effective method for treating PCBs contaminated soils, through electrically induced nanoparticle transport. To understand the fundamental aspects of the coupled technology the authors suggest dividing the overall problem into three submodels (transport of nanoparticles by electroosmosis and by electrophoresis and degradation of PCB) which are then integrated into a macroscale transport/degradation numerical model. This paper presents the experimental approach suggested for each submodel under study. Testing this innovative solution using the suggested approach will allow for a deeper understanding of both the electrokinetically enhanced transport of nZVI and PCBs dechlorination.
- Nutrient recovery from digestate using gas-permeable membrane technology and struvite formationPublication . Riaño, B.; Oliveira, V.; Molinuevo-Salces, B.; García-González, M. C.; Ferreira, CéliaThe performance of gas-permeable membrane (GPM) technology for nitrogen (N) recovery from digestate with subsequent struvite formation is evaluated in this work and compared with the recoveries obtained by centrifugation or direct struvite formation. Nearly 68% of the digestate N was recovered using GPM technology, which was almost 2-times higher than the recoveries achieved in solid form by centrifugation or direct struvite formation. In addition, the use of GPM as a first stage improved the P recovery by struvite formation from the N-trapping digestate up to 100%.
