Abstract(s)

The Grand Tour was a trip with an eminently cultural and educational purpose that began in Great Britain in the 17th century. It was to maximize the experience that young people, guided by a master, were introduced to the culture of the visited territory. Previously established itineraries, which have increased over time, were followed in this quest to see, and contact with different realities. The marriage of Queen Maria II to the future King Fernando II allowed a cultural and educational change in the Portuguese royal family. This change extended to the future generations, including their sons (Pedro and Luís), the grandson (Carlos), and the great-grandchildren (Luís Filipe and Manuel), who enjoyed these trips to various parts of Europe. The present work thus focuses on the Grand Tour held in 1903 by Queen D. Amélia and the princes D. Luís Filipe and D. Manuel. The trip included several parts of the Mediterranean Sea, having as highpoints the stays in Egypt and Southern Italy. The trip was initially prepared for the queen to get away from the exhausting institutional reality. However, it included later some close friends and the children. The main goal of the present work is to follow the itinerary of the Grand Tour of D. Luís Filipe, focusing on the main visited places and respective activities, as well as highlighting the sea as a “road to knowledge” and, in this case, a preparation for the exercise of royal power (through its cultural and diplomatic component). Keywords: Grand Tour; sea; D. Amélia; Portuguese royal family.
