Is the Sea the Enemy?: occupation and anthropogenic impacts at Costa da Caparica (Portugal)

This article explores the development of human occupation and the anthropogenic impacts at Costa da Caparica, a Portuguese coastal town that faces several challenges concerning coastal erosion processes. A historical long-term analysis was made, mainly through medieval and modern writing sources, crossing such textual data with geology, geography, and other related scientific disciplines studies regarding the coastal erosion problems of the study area. Therefore, from the Middle Ages to the present, human actions concerning this area were examined. The sea was first seen as an income, due to tourism, and later seen as a danger. It is argued that human behaviors were the main cause of historical problems and also the present vulnerabilities and risks associated with this coastal stretch of the Portuguese littoral. We must search the past for answers to understand present problems and think about the future. This is the main purpose of this paper: to contribute to a better knowledge concerning coastal sustainability based on the results of past human actions, as a way to avoid such mistakes in the future.

Um príncipe real em trânsito: a viagem de D. Luís Filipe pelo Mediterrâneo (1903)

A realização de uma viagem com uma finalidade eminentemente cultural e educacional, designada por Grand Tour, surgiu na Grã-Bretanha no século XVII. De modo a maximizar a experiência, os jovens eram guiados por um mestre que os introduzia na cultura do território visitado, percorrendo alguns roteiros previamente estabelecidos que foram aumentando ao longo do tempo, na busca de verem e contactarem com realidades diferentes. Em Portugal, o casamento da rainha D. Maria II com o
futuro rei D. Fernando II permitirá uma mudança cultural e educacional na família real que se prolongará nas gerações futuras,
nomeadamente nos filhos (Pedro e Luís), no neto (Carlos) e nos bisnetos (Luís Filipe e Manuel), que usufruíram destas viagens
por várias partes da Europa. O presente trabalho incide, assim, no Grand Tour realizado, em 1903, pela rainha D. Amélia e pelos
príncipes D. Luís Filipe e D. Manuel. A viagem incluiu várias partes do mar Mediterrâneo, tendo como pontos altos as estadias
no Egito e no Sul da Itália. Inicialmente preparada apenas para a rainha, com a finalidade de a abstrair da esgotante realidade
institucional, a viagem será, no entanto, alterada, passando a incluir alguns amigos mais próximos e os filhos. O principal objetivo
do presente trabalho é acompanhar o roteiro do Grand Tour de D. Luís Filipe, destacando os principais pontos de paragem e
respetivos programas a eles subjacentes, bem como relevar o mar enquanto “estrada do conhecimento” e, no caso concreto, uma
preparação para o exercício do poder real (componente cultural e diplomática).

Empowering conscious citizenship: lessons from historical climate evolution

This research centers on a short-term e-Learning course titled “Climate change, human adaptations and entrepreneurship in historical tourism”. This course explores the diachronic impact of climate on human communities, the Anthropocene concept, its chronology, and predictive models. It aims to foster a conscious entrepreneurial mindset and promote sustainable historical tourism, respecting historical memory at social, urban, and environmental levels. Developed by interdisciplinary trainers from Universidade Aberta in Portugal, the course follows its e-learning model and targets Portuguese citizens with at least a 12th-grade education interested in historical tourism and climate change. Funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan through the T.I.A. – Tourism International Academy project, the course is free for trainees, with over 90% completion rates. Spanning from prehistory to the present, the course focuses on climate impacts over time and the Anthropocene. It emphasizes sustainable tourism, conscious entrepreneurship, and respect for historical memory. We analyzed a sample of 80 trainees to assess the impact of our pedagogical methods on their awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the promotion of Sustainability Transition addressing primarily SDG 13 (Climate Action). Our research also connects with SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 10 (Reducing Inequalities), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 15 (Protecting Life on Land). Now in its fourth edition, the training underscores the importance of opening the Academy to the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches to enhance awareness of SDGs and encourage entrepreneurial action, democratizing the discussion of this critical topic. Conclusions highlight the significant impact of the training on enhancing trainees’ awareness, specific knowledge, opinions, and future behaviors regarding sustainable historical tourism. The training effectively increased understanding of the importance of sustainable tourism in achieving SDGs and inspired actionable steps towards this goal.
