  • The epic discourse as an expression of “Homesickness” for a mediterranean world: Jerónimo Corte-Real and the Battle of Lepanto
Publication . Avelar, Ana Paula; Tavim, José Alberto da Silva, Cunha, João Teles e; Cunha, João Teles e
This essay examines how a specific epic discourse, Jerónimo Corte Real’s Felicissima victoria concedida del cielo al senor don Iuan d’Austria, en el golfo de Lepanto de la poderosa armada Othomana. En el anno de nuestra salvacion de 1572 (1578), embraces the “homesickness” for a “Mediterranean World”, where the unchallenged power of Christianity would prevail. We follow the Braudelian perspective of how “the Inland Sea” had become another place for Philip II’s Spain, with the Atlantic Ocean acquiring the status of “centre of the Earth”, in order to raise the question of whether the Battle of Lepanto was embodied as a sign of a nostalgic Mediterranean World. Anchored in concepts such as “homesickness”, nostalgia, and memory, we analyze the shaping of an epic discourse, through one military action: Lepanto’s battle. In Corte-Real’s poetic account of a historical event, the ideas and emotions built upon the notion of belonging, hospitality and loss are also revealed.

  • Leceia, Moita da Ladra e Outeiro Redondo: similarities and differences between three walled sites of Portuguese Extremadura
    Publication . Cardoso, João Luís
The three major walled sites where the author conducted archaeological excavations - Leceia (Oeiras), between 1983 and 2002; Moita da Ladra (Vila Franca de Xira), between 2003 and 2006; and Outeiro Redondo (Sesimbra), between 2005 and 2016 - yielded a body of information of unquestionable relevance to our knowledge of architectures, stratigraphies and absolute datings. This data became essential for understanding the economy and social organisation of the populations that occupied this vast region, with its own cultural significance: the socalled ‘Chalcolithic of Extremadura’. In addition to this remarkable wealth of information, the exhumed archaeological remains have been thoroughly studied and published in detail. This paper will describe the main architectural features, both defensive and residential, of each site. Moreover, the archaeological assemblages will be enhanced based on the identification of artefacts that, given their typology, could provide objective information about the most relevant economic activities carried out by the sites’ inhabitants. Such conclusions, combined with the sites’ features, including their geographical location and size, led, for the first time, to conclusions on their functional nature and how they fitted into the demographic and economic fabric of the densely populated Lisbon/Setúbal peninsulas during the 3rd millennium BC.

  • Snu Abecassis (Copenhague, 1940 – Lisboa, 1980)
    Publication . Melo, Daniel
  • Politics, culture, and religion in modern times: the Catholic Church and the restructuring of censorship
Publication . Melo, Daniel; Barros, Júlia Leitão de
This article analyses the restructuring of Catholic Church censorial practices in the historical context of questioning and erosion of the sacred in the Western world. We defend that the international action by the Vatican in the public sphere and its potential for shaping cultural processes at a transnational level were only possible through national ramifications/mediations. We analyse its dual offensive/reactive strategy within culture and the media, which promoted worldviews and reacted to mass culture adverse to those views, and how it was carried out by a particular structure, Catholic Action. We focus on its activity in Portugal and on the scrutiny applied to cinema and the reading materials which were allowed to circulate. For that purpose, we surveyed the most relevant catholic “reading guides” published over this period and described their modes of reception across diverse public audiences. We intend to show how one of the longest dictatorships in Europe in the 20th century shaped the modus operandi of the Vatican, contributing to a global Christian culture, to a transnational censorship system, and to the maintenance of an authoritarian regime. We therefore seek to contribute to the reflection on the articulation of censorship practices of the Church and the State.
  • El conjunto de la cueva de Correio-Mor
    Publication .
