- Teaching environmental history in higher education: an innovative e-Learning approach at Universidade Aberta, PortugalPublication . Introduced in the 2023–2024 academic year, this course represents the first formal integration of environmental history into an undergraduate history degree program in Portugal. Delivered entirely through an asynchronous, student-centered e-learning model, the initiative aligns with contemporary pedagogical principles underpinning Open, Distance, and Digital Education (ODDE). Drawing on empirical data, including enrollment figures, assessment results, and pedagogical analysis, the study evidence both robust student engagement and noteworthy academic achievement, as illustrated by a 79% increase in enrollment and an average grade of 15.3/20 among successful participants. Situating the course within the broader historiographical evolution of environmental history as an interdisciplinary field, the paper interrogates the intellectual foundations, thematic scope, and regional trajectories of the discipline. It further explores the challenges inherent in teaching a complex, interdisciplinary subject in a digital environment, including issues related to student retention, linguistic accessibility, and the cognitive demands of integrating scientific and historical methodologies. The findings underscore the pedagogical efficacy of continuous assessment mechanisms and collaborative digital learning strategies in fostering critical engagement and environmental literacy. The article concludes by reflecting on the implications of this initiative for education for sustainable development, advocating for the further expansion of environmental history within academic curricula and highlighting the potential for international collaboration in the co-creation of open-access, multilingual learning resources.
- Empowering conscious citizenship: lessons from historical climate evolutionPublication . This course explores the diachronic impact of climate on human communities, the Anthropocene concept, its chronology, and predictive models. It aims to foster a conscious entrepreneurial mindset and promote sustainable historical tourism, respecting historical memory at social, urban, and environmental levels. Developed by interdisciplinary trainers from Universidade Aberta in Portugal, the course follows its e-learning model and targets Portuguese citizens with at least a 12th-grade education interested in historical tourism and climate change. Funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan through the T.I.A. – Tourism International Academy project, the course is free for trainees, with over 90% completion rates. Spanning from prehistory to the present, the course focuses on climate impacts over time and the Anthropocene. It emphasizes sustainable tourism, conscious entrepreneurship, and respect for historical memory. We analyzed a sample of 80 trainees to assess the impact of our pedagogical methods on their awareness of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the promotion of Sustainability Transition addressing primarily SDG 13 (Climate Action). Our research also connects with SDGs 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 10 (Reducing Inequalities), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 15 (Protecting Life on Land). Now in its fourth edition, the training underscores the importance of opening the Academy to the promotion of interdisciplinary approaches to enhance awareness of SDGs and encourage entrepreneurial action, democratizing the discussion of this critical topic. Conclusions highlight the significant impact of the training on enhancing trainees’ awareness, specific knowledge, opinions, and future behaviors regarding sustainable historical tourism. The training effectively increased understanding of the importance of sustainable tourism in achieving SDGs and inspired actionable steps towards this goal.
- Tutankhamon em Portugal. Relatos na imprensa portuguesa (1922–1939): o impacto da descoberta do túmulo de Tutankhamon em PortugalPublication . Sales, José das Candeias; Mota, Susana; Sillva, Luiza; Pires, Guilherme; Torres, Inês; Lemos, RennanA descoberta do túmulo do faraó Tutankhamon por Howard Carter e pelo seu patrocinador lord Carnarvon, a 4 de Novembro de 1922, foi noticiada pela imprensa de todo o mundo, de forma inusitada e sem precedentes, tornando este faraó e os principais intervenientes nessa “maravilhosa descoberta no Vale” conhecidos de milhões de leitores. O projecto de investigação, na área da Recepção do antigo Egipto, Tutankhamon em Portugal. Relatos na Imprensa Portuguesa (1922-1939), procurando perceber qual o impacto da descoberta e subsequente escavação do túmulo do em Portugal, levou a cabo a identificação, recolha e análise das notícias publicadas pelos jornais portugueses sobre esta descoberta arqueológica que marcou de forma indelével a Egiptologia e a Egiptomania. O corpus reunido permitiu perceber de que de que forma foi transmitida, aos leitores portugueses, a informação sobre o que à época se passava no Egipto, destacando-se o interesse pelo saber histórico, pelas riquezas artísticas e pela suposta ‘maldição do faraó’. Paralelamente, esta investigação, cujo cerne foram as notícias dos periódicos nacionais, permitiu identificar diferentes expressões de Egiptomania e Tutmania em Portugal, assim como os primeiros passos de trabalhos de natureza Egiptológica. É objectivo deste texto apresentar uma súmula deste projecto, começando por sistematizar as fontes e o corpus reunido, contemplando as temáticas principais das notícias, e concluindo com a identificação das manifestações egiptológicas e de Egiptomania emanadas da descoberta do túmulo do faraó Tutankhamon.

- Meeting the judge: the late medieval Portuguese peripheral justice in geographical and cronological contextPublication . Justice and communities in a transitional period (Portugal, 1481-1580). It aimed to answer one question: analyze how the sporadic nomination of royal judges operating with local governments in the Middle Ages evolved into systematic and permanent institutions of erudite officials in the main Portuguese cities and towns of the Modern Age? The presented texts go beyond this, by contributing to better understand the process of expansion of the Portuguese Crown’s peripheral judicial apparatus (in number and complexity), which entailed an irreversible loss of autonomy for the communities. The book has ten chapters providing: (I) state of the art and problematization on this subject; (II) an organogram of central and local judicial instances; (III) the Crown’s use of peripheral magistrates; (IV) the intense legislative activity involved in defining the competences of royal judicial agents, which prevailed from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Although concentrated mainly in Portugal, there are four texts that focus on other territories. Two texts about Castilian judicial norms and agents in the Late Middle Ages have been included, enabling a comparison to be made of the institutional experiences of the two neighboring kingdoms. Two other contributions focus on vestiges of medieval local justice organization and royal control in North Africa and in the Orient. The authors resorted to different types of sources and methodologies, from case study analysis to the observation of groups of officers using a prosopographic method. The book provides in the end a glossary of the offices, institutions and rules of central, peripheral and local justice in medieval Portugal and Castile, as well as seven maps on the topics studied.

Após uma residência itinerante por vários palácios de Lisboa , a história e toponímia do local escolhido para sua residência ficariam, assim, para sempre ligadas a esta Rainha. Este texto analisada a evolução do edifício nas diferentes campanhas de obras, assim como o programa decorativo azulejar do seu interior. Douglas; Cunha, EugéniaAs one of the most important Mesolithic sites in Europe the Muge shell middens have been known for 150 years. Much information has been published about the hundreds of human burials, but not much about the lithic and faunal assemblages. Although the osseous materials present in the Muge shell middens are a very important part of the material culture, their technological analysis is yet to be done. We present here the results of the technological analysis of a sample of antler artefacts that were recovered from Moita do Sebastião and Cabeço da Arruda shell middens in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and deposited in the Geological Museum in Lisbon. We have registered two fracturing techniques and three wear techniques employed in the manufacture of this osseous industry and four categories of tools made by the Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.

Em 1901, José de Souza Larcher (1821-1913), pela mão de Mello d’Azevedo Editor, publicou, em Lisboa, Impressões de Viagem. O que eu vi e ouvi atravez do Egypto e da velha Europa, em dois tomos. O livro resultou das duas viagens que fez ao Egipto, ambas a convite do seu filho Alberto de Sousa Larcher (1848-1929), então juiz nos Tribunais Mistos do Egipto: a primeira, no início de 1894 e, a segunda, na primeira metade de 1898.
