- Bullying homofóbico: crenças e práticas de estudantes do ensino superior em PortugalPublication . Neves, Sofia; Borges, Janete; Vieira, Cristina Pereira; Sousa, AnaO presente estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar as crenças e as práticas de um grupo de 369 estudantes do Ensino Superior português, 282 do sexo feminino e 84 do sexo masculino, com uma média de idades de 21.49, relativamente ao bullying homofóbico. A partir do preenchimento de uma ficha sociodemográfica e de três Inventários, concluiu-se que os homens praticam e sofrem mais bullying homofóbico do que as mulheres. Os/As estudantes portugueses/as que praticam comportamentos violentos contra pessoas lésbicas e gays (LG) apresentam crenças mais conservadoras sobre a orientação sexual LG e sobre o género do que os/as que não praticam. As pessoas que revelam crenças sobre a orientação sexual LG mais conservadoras são também aquelas que revelam crenças de género mais conservadoras (r=0.423, p<0.001). Os homens revelam crenças sobre a orientação sexual LG mais conservadoras (t(102.046)=-4.908,p<.001), sendo também os que praticam mais violência contra pessoas LG.
- Climate change and societyPublication . Alves, Fátima; Schmidt, LuísaClimate change represents the greatest challenge of the 21st Century and will affect human societies in multiple ways. Our knowledge about the nature and physics of climate change, its causes and its consequences, is far greater than our understanding of the societal changes it poses. Climate change is a social production, a complex process of societal transformations, which we all need to understand to better cope with the challenge it presents. Climatic conditions play a significant role in people's lives and can interfere with lives in multiple ways. The causes are known, and they put human action at the center of the debate. The consequences of climate change to ways of life are complex, diversified, inevitable, and will likely become worse over time. The nations that contributed most to the problem are often those that least suffer the consequences while those who contributed the least are often the most affected, vulnerable and unprepared. In addition to the expected impacts in the most diverse economic and environmental sectors, human health has emerged as an important area associated with climate change. Although not frequently mentioned or targeted as a key political concern, it is expected that the impact of climate change on human health will be severe, both in the distribution and incidence of diseases. Moreover, climate change will have extensive implications to human well-being, which will reflect on social structures and ways of life. The aim of this E-Book is to highlight and share knowledge on the social, economic, political and cultural implications of climate change, as well as reflect upon the required transformations in policy, governance and social-cultural strategies to mitigation, adaptation and prevention. To understand the multiple dimensions of climate change and their interdependencies, we need to bring together various sciences, knowledges and powers. The social sciences, and sociology, play a central role in analyzing the effects of human activities on natural systems. Social Sciences can scrutinize those phenomena and relations that, within human societies, produce social structures that ultimately have negative impacts on the environment. This E-Book also aims to provide an overview of social sciences literature and research on climate change, identifying key areas for further research and development.

- Domestic violence against LGBTI people: perspectives of Portuguese education professionalsPublication . Sousa, Edgar; Neves, Sofia; Ferreira, Mafalda; Topa, Joana; Vieira, Cristina Pereira; Borges, Janete S.; Rodrigo, Costa; André, LiraLesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people are more likely to be exposed to domestic violence than the rest of the population. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, 28 professionals from the educational sector, aged between 28 and 64 years old (M = 44.5), were interviewed to describe and understand their perspectives on the sector’s ability to support, intervene and get involved with LGBTI people and, particularly, with victims or former victims of domestic violence. Through a thematic content analysis, three main themes emerged: (i) life trajectories of LGBTI people; (ii) domestic violence perpetrated against LGBTI people; and (iii) training of the educational sector to intervene with LGBTI people. The results show that Portuguese education professionals are not trained to recognize and intervene with LGBTI people and, in particular, with those who are victims of domestic violence, since they are unaware of the existence of protocols and/or guidelines for detecting and preventing risk situations among students. Furthermore, the curricular plan fails in the coverage of domestic violence and LGBTI-related topics, although the National Strategy for Citizenship Education has been implemented in Portugal since 2017. Findings suggest the need to invest in education professionals’ training.

Henriques, SusanaÉ com um sentimento misto de orgulho e responsabilidade que, através do presente editorial, vos apresento o mais recente número da Revista Refas – Revista Fatec Zona Sul. Responsabilidade, porque se trata de uma revista científica prestes a completar uma década de existência. Durante este período temporal reuniu um arquivo de quase três centenas de artigos, em língua portuguesa, mas também em língua espanhola e em língua inglesa. A autoria destes artigos é igualmente diversa entre docentes, investigadores, discentes, colaboradores, tendo por base programas de mestrado, doutorado, cursos de graduação e tecnológicos. Enfim, uma enorme diversidade que se traduz em riqueza de conhecimento produzido e aqui partilhado. Orgulho por apresentar mais uma edição de elevada relevância científica. A presente edição mantém a organização dos artigos em função das áreas definidas no “Foco e Escopo” da Refas – Revista Fatec Zona Sul. A saber: Análise e Desenvolvimento de Sistemas, Gestão Empresarial, Logística e Temas Relacionados.

It will massively affect human societies in complex and multiple ways. And it seems to be almost uncontrollable in the near future. Our knowledge of the chemistry and physics of climate change, its causes and its consequences for planetary systems, is far greater than our understanding of the societal changes it poses. Climate change results from a complex process of societal transformations, which we all need to understand to better cope with the challenges it presents. Climatic conditions play a significant role and interfere with people’s lives in multiple ways. The causes are essentially known, based on unequivocal human action. All solutions also involve human decision and action. It is social and human action in both individual and social settings that are decisive for the future pathways of climate change and its disentanglement. There is also a factor of climate injustice that must be addressed. The nations that contributed most to the problem are often those that experience more limited and manageable consequences while those who contributed the least are often the most affected, vulnerable and unprepared. With climate change, the risk of conflicts, disasters and internal displacement increases so exacerbate existing inequalities and poverty. This presents a moral conundrum of the highest order. At the ecological level, the destruction or disintegration of nature/nurture is more visible, with strong impacts on the availability and reduction of natural resources. In terms of social systems, climate change breaks down social organization, housing, the food system, generates migration, increases economic losses, hunger and public health breakdowns. In a more invisible way, climate change destroys cultural belonging and individual and collective identities. In addition to these expected impacts in the most diverse social, cultural, economic and environmental sectors, human health has emerged as an important area of considerable alarm. Although not frequently mentioned or targeted as a key political concern, it is expected that the impact of climate change on human health will be severe, both in the proliferation and incidence of diseases. Moreover, climate change will have extensive implications to human wellbeing, which will reflect on social structures and ways of life.
- Educação digital, pandemia e desigualdades de géneroPublication . Daremos ainda destaque ao contexto de crise gerado pela pandemia da Covid-19, e às consequentes transformações ocorridas no ensino, que trouxeram a público alguns dos constrangimentos e potencialidades da educação digital, contribuindo para o debate sobre o papel deste tipo de educação no empoderamento das mulheres.
- Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the lives of women with different socioeconomic backgrounds and victimization experiences in PortugalPublication . Teixeira, Ana Lúcia; Cerejo, Dalila; Rosa, Rosário; Lisboa, ManuelThe heavy economic, social, and psychological toll of pandemic lockdowns around the world and their disproportionate effect on women are widely acknowledged, but different socioeconomic backgrounds and contexts may influence the degree to which stay-at-home measures impact their lives. Additionally, knowing that violence against women tends to increase during times of crisis, we are testing if the additional burden of victimization represents an added load to the perceived social impacts of the lockdown. Using 2021 survey data from a random sample of 1541 Portuguese women, the paper explores, through logistic regression models, the social impact of the lockdown on the lives of women, its socioeconomic determinants, and the role played by violence against women during the pandemic. The results show that the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown did not equally affect all facets of women’s social lives, and women with higher education status and that experienced income reductions due to the measures taken to control the pandemic are more prone to experience a more severe negative impact of the lockdown on the various facets of their lives. Additionally, having been a victim during the pandemic partially mediates the effect of education and income reduction on the social outcomes of the lockdown.
- Evaluation of the lights4violence program: reduction in machismo and acceptance of violence among adolescents in EuropePublication . Pérez Martínez, Vanesa; Sanz-Aranguez, Belen; Ferrer, Rosario; Bowes, Nicola; Alba Pereira, Alba; Guadaño Sánchez, Miriam; Albaladejo-Blázquez, Natalia; Rosati, Nicoletta; Neves, Sofia; Vieira, Cristina Pereira; Jankowiak, Barbara; Jaskulska, Sylwia; Waszyńska, Katarzyna; Cuadrado Vives, Maria CarmenBackground: Machismo and acceptance of violence (AV) against women are part of the social construction of hegemonic masculinity and are related to the risk of dating violence. This study aims to analyze the efectiveness of the Lights4Violence program in reducing machismo and AV in secondary school students from diferent European cities. Methods: Quasi-experimental longitudinal study using a convenience sample of 1,146 high school students from diferent European cities (12–17 years old) including 575 intervention group students (59.1% girls) and 571 control group students (62.7% girls). We performed linear regression models to identify the efect of the intervention, model‑ling the diference in means in machismo and AV (dependent variables) between wave-2 and wave-1. Results: An interaction was identifed between the group variable and the empathy variable. In wave-2, girls with high empathy at baseline in the intervention group obtained lower mean AV scores (β: -0.131; p=0.004). However, the boys in the intervention group (reference: control group) with low empathy at baseline registered a signifcant increase in the mean values of machismo (β: 0.247; p<0.001). Conclusion: The importance of empathy is shown in the efectiveness of interventions to reduce machismo and AV in adolescents. While the Lights4Violence program focuses on promoting healthy relationships, there were some controversial results. It is possible that some children, especially those with less empathy, may have felt “challenged” during the intervention and/or assessment. This suggests the need for the development of interventions that also consider psychological processes and integrate the promotion of positive expressions of masculinity.
