- Corporate social responsibility and management in a glocal contextPublication . Silva, Maria; Jacquinet, Marc; Nobre, Ângela LacerdaCorporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a recurrent and global concept used by international and local corporations, with its supporters, skeptics, and critics. It is also a growing area of concern and practice for businesses for answering the challenges of the present century, such as fighting poverty or promoting sustainable development goals. There is need—almost consensual—for clarifying the impact and the policy setting related to complex areas, such as climate change, environmental issues, social responsibility and a whole array of ethical issues, at global and at the local level (i.e., through an unavoidable glocal perspective). The purpose of this chapter is, first, to review the literature and the main issues related to corporate social responsibility; second, to identify the current challenges this scientific area is facing; and, third, to pinpoint its relevance at the level of the digital economy setting, for the management of the emergent business models and of the information systems management of businesses.
- Critical reflections on tourism: phenomenological perspectives on global-South, degrowth and the role of visual aidsPublication . Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Gameiro, Amandine; Duarte, Rogério; Jacquinet, Marc; Pérez, RafaelFrom a critical phenomenology perspective, it is possible to interpret tourism as an open arena where different players interact, thus illustrating the rationale behind their epistemic positioning. Tourism, as an economic sector, is both a product and a producer of what is happening at global level. This to-and-from mutual determinations may be exemplified by visual aids that help to map the conceptual models that shape scientific debate. The research objective of the present study is to critically explore the theoretical potential of the global-South paradigm in order to bring a better understanding of tourism, illuminating the creative tensions that are shaping this dynamic, complex, multifactorial and structuring sector. The global-South paradigm involves degrowth theories and other non-orthodox economic perspectives that determine how cities, communities and territories manage their symbolic and intangible heritage that, in turn, determine decision-making, political debate and, ultimately, the living conditions of their population. The contribution of the present research is to draw together a plethora of academic schools of thought that may help to critically identify the active forces in the tourism sector. The goal is not to offer detailed scientific evidence of the social, economic and political strains in tourism but to indicate and to highlight the potential that is already there to be explored in open reflection and in theoretical incursions, contributing to expand the horizons of thought and action of contemporary societies.

- Emerging boundaries of human rights, conviviality, and social science of globalization: critiques in search of new dynamicsPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Bussotti, Luca; Nhaueleque, LauraThe panel deals with three interrelated issues – even if their commonness does not seem that obvious – of the current transformations of global societies and social sciences across very diverse geographical areas around the globe: human rights, conviviality (Caillé) and the issue of the “global” in social sciences. Each subject is contested. Each has reached a “frontier” and the debate turns around the question of regress or new ways of expansion. So, the question is what are the dynamics of new phenomena that try to cross the frontier.
- From bubbles, financial and credit crises to regulation: the issue of innovation and the legal nexusPublication . Jacquinet, MarcThe current crisis and the Great Depression of the 1930s have several parallels (and differences) that several economists have pointed out. Here what interest me are two common and systemic aspects between the two crises: the emergence of technological, financial, and legal innovations both during the upswing and the downturn and the creation of new regulatory institutions, changing the rules of the game, just after the outset of the recessions.
- Generation Z and smart cities: a bibliometric exploration of their contribution to urban sustainabilityPublication . Negas, Mário Carrilho; MárioThis presentation examines how Generation Z is addressed in the scientific literature at the intersection of smart cities and urban sustainability. Through a critical review of recent research, it identifies recurring themes and dominant approaches that frame Generation Z both as a driver of innovation and as a critical social actor within contemporary urban transformations. The literature highlights Generation Z’s advanced digital skills and technological fluency as key enablers of eco-efficient urban practices and data-driven sustainability initiatives. At the same time, strong emphasis is placed on participatory, co-creation, and bottom-up approaches, positioning young people as active contributors to the design, governance, and evaluation of smart city strategies. Beyond this optimistic framing, the analysis also reveals a growing body of critical scholarship that problematizes smart city technologies when they reinforce social inequalities, exclude marginalized voices, or lack ethical and democratic grounding. Overall, the presentation argues that Generation Z is increasingly represented not only as a beneficiary or user of smart city technologies, but as an engaged and reflexive social group capable of both shaping and contesting prevailing models of urban sustainability.
- HEI in the context of global citizenshipPublication . Jacquinet, Marc; Nobre, Ângela Lacerda; Duarte, Rogério; Silva, Maria Luisa; Pimentel, FernandoThe last decades have seen an expansion of the application of Quality Systems in the service sectors and in the public service sectors, including in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Taking into account the fact that educational institutions are the incubators of future societies, it is critical to understand the role played by Quality Systems in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of such sector. HEI replicate or else reject and innovate the basic settings of each society. HEI both repeat and strengthen the social norms, the social conventions and the belief systems of each society or else they renovate and create new operational modes of existence. Global change happens as a result of the cumulative effect of such partial changes.
