  • Firefighters’ leadership and well-being in rural fires: study in virtual reality environments

    In this study, we analysed the effects of team leadership style on the well-being of firefighter teams operating under conditions of a simulated rural fire. Twenty teams of firefighters (composed of five elements each) took part in a computer‐based fire‐fighting simulation task and were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (leadership style: directive vs. empowering). Our results showed that directive leadership style was negatively associated with team members levels of stress and anxiety, while an empowering leadership style did not have a significant effect on team members levels of stress and anxiety. The distinct effects of team leadership style remain unchanged when we controlled for the levels of stress and anxiety before the simulation. Through moderated regression analyses we observed that the effect of directive leadership styles in reducing stress and anxiety was stronger for participants with higher levels of previous stress and anxiety. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

  • A reflexão ética na investigação em educação digital deve ser uma coisa viva

    Este ebook surge como resposta às questões e interrogações que têm emergido na discussão que a Comissão de Ética do LE@D tem tido com os investigadores sobre os desafios éticos quando estão em causa contextos digitais de investigação. Neste contexto, este volume recolhe contributos variados, procurando apresentar um conjunto de diretrizes que ajudarão a fundamentar o processo de tomada de decisões éticas em futuras investigações na área. Abordam-se i) algumas das questões éticas que se levantam no âmbito das comunidades de investigação; ii) os problemas éticos que se colocam ao investigador em Educação, quando recorre a tecnologias digitais para a recolha de dados ou quando o foco de investigação se situa em contextos digitais; iii) os desafios éticos que se apresentam nos estudos dos media sociais e os meios para garantir a proteção dos participantes; iv) as novas e importantes questões legais e éticas associadas às tecnologias emergentes que permitem processos de captura, preservação e utilização de dados em larga escala. É, ainda, disponibilizada em apêndice a tradução para português de Ethical Guidelines 3.0, da Association of Internet Researchers, que gentilmente consentiu na sua tradução para este volume.

  • The challenges behind the development of an e-Mentoring model for online distance education: a pilot experience

    Different higher education institutions (HEI) have broadly adopted peer mentoring as a strategy to pro vide initial and continuous support for new students, to promote their academic inclusion. In Distance Education HEI, peer e-mentoring assumes a crucial role in the promotion and maintenance of social and cognitive presence and in the creation of a sense of belonging to the academic community. Thus, it is assumed as a crucial support for the overcoming of online students’ specific difficulties and as a fac tor for his success. After a theoretical framework, this chapter presents the case of a pilot e-mentoring project implemented in a European open university based on the paradigms of virtual learning commu nities and the model of the community of inquiry (CoI). To conclude, it presents a set of assumptions for the construction of an e-mentoring model adapted to online DE and further research to be conducted
