Abstract(s)
Using data from 130 texts of the“Estudo Geral da Universidade de Coimbra” (2003–2012), this paper proposes an adaptation of current PhD theses’ typologies (Swales, 2004; Hyland, 2009). Following the framework of the “Interactionnisme Sociodiscursif” (Bronckart, 1996), it is assumed that discursive practices reflect social choices of disciplinary areas and academic communities. Compositional properties from indexes and introductions were analyzed according to their status as genre parameters, mechanisms of textual realization or genre markers (Coutinho e Miranda, 2009). According to our data, there are four types of PhD plans: IMRDC (16%), anthology (33%), topic-based (32%) and mixed (19%). Conventional IMRDC and anthology plans prevail in technological or experimental research areas, whereas occasional adaptations of topic-based or mixed plans prevail in Humanities and Social Sciences.
