- Analysis of scientific production aligned with the food and nutrition security strategy of Portuguese-Speaking African Institutions: a systematic scoping reviewPublication . Miquitaio, Augusto Mário; Crisp, Alex Harley; Zuliani, Daniela Queiroz; Moura, Ana Pinto de; Oliveira, Maria Rita Marques deThis systematic scoping review aimed to map and characterize the scientific production of researchers from Portuguese-speaking African institutions that align with the Food and Nutrition Security Strategy of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The literature search was conducted using six electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Scopus, and Web of Science), with no restrictions on the year of publication nor language. Through the search strategy, 10,061 records were identified, of which 502 documents and 654 researchers were selected by Food and Nutrition Security specialists along three axes: 1) Policy governance; 2) Access to food; 3) Availability of food. Institutional researchers from Mozambique (66.9%), Guinea-Bissau (15.9%), and Angola (11.4%) presented the most publications and international collaborations. Researchers from Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, and Equatorial Guinea institutions added only 5.8% of the total production. A greater number of publications (61%) was related to axis two of the Food and Nutrition Security Strategy of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries. The most studied themes were sustainable development, child malnutrition, and agricultural production for the first, second, and third axis, respectively. In general, scientific publications have shown limitations in their approaches due to the challenge imposed by the complexity of the food system. However, there has been a quantitative evolution in publications in the last decade, with a greater participation of researchers from Portuguese-speaking African institutions.
- Assessing the relation between career satisfaction in psychiatry with lifelong learning and scientific activityPublication . Afonso, Pedro; Ramos, Maria do Rosário; Saraiva, Sérgio; Moreira, Cátia Alves; Figueira, Maria LuísaLifelong learning (LLL) is an essential feature for the doctor to keep clinically updated and has been described as an indicator of competence and professionalism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between career satisfaction in psychiatry, lifelong learning, and commitment in scientific activities, taking into account other personal and professional effects. The survey was sent to 453 national psychiatrists and 190 surveys (41.9%) were completed online and validated. The Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning (JSPLL) was used to assess the level of LLL for each doctor. The results of the analysis of JSPLL showed that participants more satisfied with their career have greater motivation and invest more in the LLL. Furthermore, participants who were more satisfied with their career had a higher percentage of scientific activity in the last year. Multiple linear regression with these two effects in the model revealed a positive association between career satisfaction in psychiatry, LLL and the publication of scientific papers, leading to the main conclusion that satisfaction with a career in psychiatry has a significant correlation with LLL and with involvement in scientific activities.
- Food choices among Portuguese teenagers: a case studyPublication . Guimarães, Maria de Fátima; Carapeto, CristinaThe Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MDP) is currently accepted as being protective against some of the most worrisome chronic non-communicable diseases in today's society. It is important to instil this nutritional pattern in young people as it is at this point in life that healthy eating habits are created and later maintained. Assessing the adherence of students to the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MDP). A case study was carried out with 463 students aged between 14 and 20 years old. Parents of the youngsters were also surveyed to find out about the accuracy of the youth's answers and to determine the type of food preparation practiced in the family. Those who participated in this study had an informed consent, previously signed by their parents and voluntarily expressed their willingness to participate, although they could drop out at any time if they so wished. The results showed a good adherence to the Mediterranean Dietary Pattern (MDP) by the respondents (46.47%) and their knowledge about the concept of the Mediterranean Diet can be classified as “good” (39.7%) and “reasonable” (36.6%). The main conclusions of the study are that the students participating in the study have a good knowledge about the Mediterranean Food Pattern and show a high level of adherence to it.
- Food consumer science post-graduate courses: comparison of face-to-face versus online delivery systemsPublication . Moura, Ana Pinto de; Cunha, Luís Miguel; Azeiteiro, Ulisses; Aires, Luísa; Graça, Pedro; Almeida, Maria Daniel Vaz dePurpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare face-to-face versus online course delivery systems in the area of food consumption and to analyse the students’ expectations and experiences. It aims to analyse the following dimensions: general expectations, learning organization and interactions in students’ discourses. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology adopted is of interpretative nature using semi-structured qualitative interviews. An interview guide was designed taking into account the learning modalities (styles and strategies), materials and learning tools, teacher-student interaction and peer interaction dimensions. The students of both courses were interviewed in the second semester of the curricular year of the respective MSc degrees. Findings – This study has shown that face-to-face and online students are equally satisfied with their courses revealing the same confirmed general expectations. Comments for both course delivery systems are the need for more laboratory and practical classes. Results from this study also indicated that face-to-face and online educations are effective training food consumer sciences students suggesting, however, that both systems should evolve to blended-learning. Practical implications – Both course delivery systems (face-to-face and online) contributed to the competencies acquisition in Food Consumer Sciences. B-learning appears as the natural convergence of students needs. Originality/value – The online course results of the discourse analysis suggest the success developing a learning community pointing out the role of the online instructor and the course coordinator. The paper provided useful data and knowledge on which further research can be carried out.
- A food product development project with humanitarian character: an exploratory studyPublication . Lucca, G. L.; Fonseca, S. Caldas; Moura, Ana Pinto deVulnerable livelihood groups, such as the Fulanis in Guinea-Bissau, are affected by the consequences of inequality, as they lack access to healthy food, a healthy environment and adequate primary health care. Coordination between sectors can be key to building resilient food and health systems by integrating and scaling up preventive and emergency nutrition services, especially in the context of malnutrition. In 2021, a cashew-based food product was launched in Portugal in partnership with an NGO and a Portuguese food retailer. This study aims to explore the development and marketing of the product with humanitarian objectives, assessing its impact on the different stakeholders of the project. A mixed methodology was applied, combining the evaluation of consumer behavior, assessed through self-reported electronic questionnaires and in-depth interviews with the actors involved in the project. According to the retailer group stakeholders, a great opportunity for the future lies in developing new products with a humanitarian character. The results show that consumers are indeed interested in buying a product associated with a humanitarian cause, and that the product “100% Cashew Nut Butter” has a favorable consumer acceptance in terms of sensory attributes. The long-term nature of the project and the financial return were cited as strengths by all NGO stakeholders involved, but all stakeholders agreed that innovation was needed to sustain donations. Thus, this may be a cyclical process: businesses can create demand through product development, while management and consumers, in turn, drive demand. These findings can be used to improve the design of future projects that might use this as an example.
- Reasons for the increase in the incidence of Diabetes Mellitus in Pemba, Mozambique: case studyPublication . Carapeto, Cristina; Michal, SoaresIntroduction: Despite diabetes mellitus being a condition which treatment, causes, and consequences are well-known, its prevalence continues to increase, with an incidence comparable to that of epidemics. Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMII) who visit the Pemba Hospital in Mozambique adhere to the recommended treatment and have the socioeconomic conditions to follow the diet recommended for controlling their condition. Results: This case study included 28 patients, using a food frequency questionnaire and questions related to the patients' daily lives. The results were related to the dependent variable of social class. It was found that patients adhere to the recommended treatment but there is a general difficulty in accessing food regardless of the respondents' social class. It was also found that there is a high level of awareness among the respondents regarding DMII and its treatment. Conclusion: The socioeconomic conditions of the study population determine their level of adherence to DMII, especially regarding adopting a diet favourable to controlling the condition.
