- Diferenças entre marcas nos serviços multiple-play em PortugalPublication . Moreira, Antonio; Silva, Pedro Miguel Freitas da; Moutinho, Victor FerreiraA concorrência entre operadores do mercado das telecomunicações em Portugal tem sido intensa. Os serviços «multiple-play» têm vindo a conquistar a preferência dos portugueses e a oferta tem vindo a aumentar ao longo dos anos. Face ao aumento da competitividade dos principais concorrentes, seria de esperar que os desempenhos das suas marcas fossem muito equilibrados. O objetivo deste artigo é o de analisar as diferenças entre as três principais marcas «multiple-play» em Portugal. Para tal, foi efetuada uma revisão de literatura e medidas as perceções dos clientes relativamente a cinco dimensões do marketing: lealdade, satisfação, qualidade do serviço, comunicação e experiências da marca. Foram obtidas 745 respostas de clientes «multiple-play» através de um questionário, tendo os dados sido analisados com recurso a estatística descritiva, análise confirmatória de fatores (CFA) e análise de variâncias (ANOVA). Os resultados indicam: uma diferença clara de uma das marcas para as restantes duas; a marca com melhores índices na satisfação, qualidade do serviço e comunicação não é a que tem a maior lealdade dos seus clientes; as experiências da marca podem ser um fator que ajuda a explicar a lealdade à marca.
- Internationalization in business-to-business markets: the importance of new product developmentPublication . Thus, to face the new competitive challenges of globalized markets, industrial small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need to implement new organizational approaches to take on new challenges in international markets. Based on a case study, this chapter reviews the literature on internationalization theories. Drawing on the network-based approach and on the resource-based view of the firm, we examine how collaborative new product development processes played a fundamental role in the internationalization process of a SME using a relationship-based perspective. The featured case concerns to a successful ex-small technical textile firm that leveraged its competitive strategy, climbed up the value chain, and extended its international activities following a technology-based path.
- Inward internationalization: important challenges among SMEsPublication . Moreira, Antonio; Ferreira, Luis Miguel D. F.; Silva, Pedro Miguel Freitas da; Pérez-Uribe, R.; Salcedo-Pérez, C.; Ocampo-Guzman, D.The existing literature on internationalization and purchasing is vast; however, the inward internationalization perspective is an under-researched topic. In this chapter, the authors review the literature on internationalization of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to understand the main reasons behind international purchasing and the role of experience on internationalization. Using a survey and descriptive statistics, the results from 56 respondents show that SMEs source from a small number of countries and hold those relationships for several years. The main reasons underlying international purchases are lower prices and better product quality, regardless of goods availability on the domestic market. This chapter has some limitations concerning its exploratory nature, pertaining to its sample size. Some future research avenues are presented such as a deeper look on how internationalization processes differ when SMEs begin their activity by inward rather than by outward activities.
- National culture and Its relationship with innovation and corruptionPublication . Silva, Pedro Miguel Freitas da; Moreira, Antonio; Nedelko, Z.; Brzozowski, M.Innovation is a driver of economic growth, wealth and prosperity. On the other hand, corruption emerges as a worldwide problem responsible for sapping resources, inequality, human suffering and poverty. This study hypothesizes that national culture, measured using Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions, have an impact on corruption and innovation, and that highly corrupt nations are less innovative. Data were obtained from Hofstede’s, Transparency International, and Global Innovation websites for the year 2012. The findings support the claim that most national culture aspects have an impact on corruption, although their impact on innovation is less measurable. Corruption was found to have a strong and negative effect on innovation. Our results draw attention to the usefulness of Hofstede’s six-dimension framework in research and the need for further analysis on how corruption influences innovation through mechanisms other than national culture.

As a consequence and in order to face the new competitive challenges of globalized markets, industrial small and medium-sized enterprises must be able to adapt to new organizational approaches, to innovate and to further develop their networks. Based on a case study, this chapter reviews the literature on internationalization and networks and addresses a less researched topic of supplier-clients relationships in the value chain referring to the importance of the networks, resources and collaborative new product development on the internationalization process of firms. The case reports a successful ex-small technical textile company that leveraged its competitive strategy based on technology-based paths and is thriving in both domestic and international markets.
