Abstract(s)
A dominant theme of a urban History is the relationship between public and private space. The way both interconnected throughout History is a clear reflection of the development of societies, particulary with regard tothe evolution of thinking.
The idea of public spaces as an outdoor and anonymous place setting of informal and casual encounteres as we understand is today, emerged in eighteenth century Europe an, in the particular case of Portugal, became apparent in the rebuilding of Lisbon after 1755 earthquake the same can be aplied to the evoltuin of concep of private space, in particulary. in its domestic expression. In Lisbon the layout of house interiores suffrered important changes responde simultaneously to demand of sociability and privacy. Through the example of Lisbon, this paper will analyse the conceptual and physical formulations of public space and domestic space in construction with the securarization of society and the development of Enlightenment town planning ideias.
