Abstract(s)
acompanhando a tendência nacional.
In the last decade, Vocational Education has recorded higher success rates and lower dropout rates than Regular Education, with the exception of the year 2020 (data from Direção-Geral de Estatísticas da Educação e Ciência). When comparing the national statistical data with the statistical data of Agrupamento de Escolas de Salvaterra de Magos, regarding completion, retention and dropout rates of professional courses since 2009 it is clear that there is no regular pattern in the school data, not following the national trend. In this sense we intend to give voice to the students of Vocational Education and to the school management, considering that with the study and knowledge produced, we can identify and reflect on the causes and possible solutions that can contribute to the completion rates improvement and the dropout reduction in this type of education at school. In methodological terms, we chose for a case study, with a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. As data collection techniques and instruments, we used document analysis, applied a questionnaire survey to 129 vocational education students and carried out semi-structured interviews. The first interview was conducted in a focus group with 6 finalyear students and the remaining semi-structured interviews included the participation of the School’s Director/Head Teacher, the Non-Regular Education Coordinator, two Course Directors and the school Psychologist. Subsequently, the analysis was carried out using statistical treatment of the quantitative data and content analysis of the qualitative data. As main results, we have identified were on the one hand, the general satisfaction of students who attended Vocational Education, in terms of school choice, professional area and this type of education, and on the other hand, the management action in searching for an offer for all its students. We have identified motivational and interest weaknesses in some students of this type of education, gaps in material resources, training and timely funding, and the need to carry out mechanisms to monitor the results and internal and partnerships satisfaction, in order to provide actions/strategies to apply methodologies that promote Vocational Education quality at school and promote the improvement of students’ results/success.
