Devem-se a Carlos Ribeiro (1813-1882) as primeiras descobertas dos vestígios das mais antigas actividades humanas no baixo Tejo, em 1863.
Neste trabalho descrevem-se as primeiras etapas dessas investigações, que conduziram à identificação dos primeiros concheiros mesolíticos dos vales das ribeiras de Magos e de Muge. Descrevem-se igualmente as primeiras escavações realizadas no célebre concheiro do Cabeço da Arruda e publicadas em 1865.
Carlos Ribeiro (1813-1882) was responsible for the first discoveries of the traces of the oldest human activities in the lower Tagus, in 1863. This work describes the first stages of these investigations, which led to the identification of the first Mesolithic shell middens in the Magos and Muge rivers valleys. The first excavations carried out in the famous Cabeço da Arruda shell midden and published in 1865 are also described.
