Abstract(s)
Manuel Teixeira Gomes (1860-1941), master of a vast artistic culture, art lover and consumer, throughout his life acquired – during his time as a diplomat in London (1911-1923) from auction houses, antique dealers and marchands – a significant collection of medals, art objects and decorative pieces (Western and Eastern). Part of this collection was sold in four auctions held in the English capital in the last months of 1923, and the rest was sent to Portugal to fill the mansion he bought in Caxias (the Gibalta house), where he intended to live after his post as Head of State ended. However, his unexpected resignation from office in December 1925 and his self-exile led to the dismemberment of this collection through offerings to friends and, to a large extent, donations to Portuguese public institutions such as the Casa da Moeda and museums such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Museum of Ancient Art, the National Museum of Machado de Castro, the Municipal Museum of Porto and the Municipal Museum of Lisbon. After his death in October 1941, the remainder of the collection that remained at Gibalta was moved to Portimão and, between 1999 and 2007, part of this was bought at auction by the Portimão Museum, which has the Manuel Teixeira Gomes - traveller, politician and writer centre, where fourteen of the one hundred and six pieces from the collection are on display, and which will be part of the new Manuel Teixeira Gomes House Museum Nucleus in the future.
