Abstract(s)
The study of the representations of the Other in literature for young people becomes an important research field especially taking into account the characteristics of young readers and the socialization and cultural role that literature assumes. Through the contact with the social and cultural images of the Other presented in books, young people are creating themselves availability for an effective dialogue with other cultures, acquiring, through reading, new ways of seeing the world and to dialogue with the Other. This article examines the representations of Amazonia and its inhabitants in Portuguese books for young people. We identify the socio-cultural visions and ideological values transmitted by these images and reflect on how these portraits contribute (or not) for the (de)construction of stereotypes and prejudices and to the discovery of the Other overseas.
