No concelho de Vila Franca de Xira, entre os séculos XVI e XIX, membros da aristocracia implantaram dezenas de quintas de recreio/quintas agrícolas que ainda conservam parte do seu património artístico testemunho da História da Arte Portuguesa. A Quinta Municipal de Subserra, localizada na União das Freguesias de Alhandra, São João dos Montes e Calhandriz, fundada em 1633 pelo capitão D. Diogo da Veiga ficou na família durante séculos passando pelos Condes de Subserra, Marqueses da Bemposta-Subserra, Marqueses de Rio Maior e Marqueses do Lavradio até ser vendida na década de 40 do século XX. Mais tarde, em 1980, é adquirida pela Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira (CMVFX) a João Guedes de Sousa, continuando a funcionar como espaço de exploração agrícola, de alojamento local e de dinamização cultural.
A Quinta Municipal de Subserra conserva um importante património artístico, designadamente a pintura “Os Desposórios da Virgem” de Bento Coelho da Silveira, do final do século XVII, os embrechados figurativos na fonte parietal e os embrechados de motivos geométricos e arquitetónicos da casa de fresco, ambos da segunda metade do século XVII. Para além destas manifestações artísticas, ressalta a sua azulejaria datada dos séculos XVII ao XX, nomeadamente do século XVII um padrão raro de influência têxtil da Capela de São José, os painéis figurativos e ornamentais da fonte parietal e os painéis de cenas mitológicas da casa de fresco. O estudo e a inventariação do azulejo em Portugal cresceram ao longo do tempo, entre vários contributos, foram marcados pelo trabalho de João Miguel dos Santos Simões. Considerando a riqueza artística dos azulejos e a necessidade de salvaguarda do património, perante a ausência de investigação académica sobre o tema, apresentamos um estudo e uma proposta de inventariação do património azulejar da Quinta Municipal de Subserra para possível integração no catálogo em linha Az Infinitum – Sistema de Referência e Indexação de Azulejo.
In the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, between the 16th and 19th century, members of the aristocracy established dozens of recreational and agricultural country estates, many of which still preserve part of their artistic heritage as a testimony to the history of Portuguese art. The Subserra Municipal Estate, located in the União das Freguesias de Alhandra, São João dos Montes and Calhandriz, was founded in 1633 by Captain D. Diogo da Veiga. It remained in the same family for centuries, passing successively through the Counts of Subserra, the Marquises of Bemposta-Subserra, the Marquises of Rio Maior, and the Marquises of Lavradio, until it was sold in the 1940s. Later, in the year of 1980, it was acquired by the Vila Franca de Xira Municipal Council (CMVFX) from João Guedes de Sousa and has since then, continued to operate as a agricultural estate, tourism and cultural activities The Subserra Municipal Estate preserves an important artistic heritage, particularly the painting “Os Desposórios da Virgem” by Bento Coelho da Silveira, from the late 17th century; the figurative shellwork (embrechados) of the wall fountain; and the shellwork with geometric and architectural motifs in the garden pavilion (casa de fresco), both from the second half of the 17th century. In addition to these artistic pieces, stands out as well its tilework, dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Notably from the 17th century are a rare textile-influenced pattern from the Chapel of São José, the figurative and ornamental panels of the wall fountain, and the panels depicting mythological scenes in the garden pavilion (casa de fresco). The study and cataloguing of tiles in Portugal have developed over time and, among many contributions, were notably shaped by the work of João Miguel dos Santos Simões. Considering the artistic richness of tiles and the need for Heritage preservation, and to face the lack of academic research on the subject, we present a study and a proposal for the catalogue of the tile heritage of the Subserra Municipal Estate, with a view to its possible inclusion in the online catalogue Az Infinitum – Azulejo Indexation and Referencing System.
