Abstract(s)
The aim of this paper is to present an ongoing research project on aca- demic genres. Following the framework of the “Interactionnisme Sociodiscursif” (Bronckart, 1996) and Text Linguistics contributions (Adam, 2001, 2008), the analysis relies on genre parameters, mechanisms of textual realization and genre markers (Coutinho & Miranda, 2009). Data from corpora are selected and organ- ized according to Adam’s genre criteria: enunciation (author’s stance and voice), pragmatic goals, compositional structure (text plan, sequence types); semantics (contents); stylistics (lexical selection and sentence structures); metatextual, peri- textual and material features (self-references, textual boundaries, formatting and editing devices). PhD dissertations, Master theses and abstracts are similar to already reported models (Swales, 2004; Hyland 2009; Martín-Martín, 2005 i.a.), but genre criteria show a wide variety of adjustments according to disci- plinary areas, institutional restrictions, individual choices and language con- straints. Evidence points to a Portuguese adaptation of international genres and to a dynamic discourse that may well reflect a changing paradigm in knowledge dissemination.
