Abstract(s)
This text, written in the scope of our research project Tutankhamon em Portugal. Relatos na imprensa portuguesa (1922-1939), aims to show the importance given by the national press to the discovery of the tomb of the pharaoh Tutankhamun by Howard Carter and his patron Lord Carnarvon on the 4th of November of 1922, and the facts that arose from this discovery, especially during the years of 1923 and 1924. The newspapers and the magazines in Portugal widely reported not only the works undertaken on the tomb and the artefacts found there, but also the episodes with a strong superstitious nature linked to the death of the patron Lord Carnarvon (5th of April of 1923). Through a selection of texts concerning the topic of “the curse of the mummy”, we intend to show how the Portuguese authors, or the translation of foreign texts, expressed the keenness in bringing the ancient Egypt to the Portuguese public in the 20s of the 20th century. With the almost daily spread of news, the Portuguese press was a powerful agent in magnifying the mystery and the fascination that the ancient Egyptian civilization had upon the Portuguese readers. At the same time, it helped transforming the pharaonic Egypt into a closer and concrete reality, never losing, though, its subjective and mythical side.
