Camilo Pessanha é amplamente considerado um dos mais relevantes poetas da modernidade portuguesa. Uma das características que desde logo se destaca na sua obra é o contributo dado à poesia simbolista portuguesa. Outra das particularidades do autor que o tornam distinto dos seus pares relaciona-se com o facto de Camilo Pessanha ter vivido em Macau e se ter dedicado ao estudo da língua e cultura chinesas, chegando a ser mencionado como “o mais chinês dos poetas ocidentais, antes de Ezra Pound” (Sá Cunha, 1999, p. 72). Essa devoção de âmbito intercultural levou-o à tradução de poesia chinesa, nomeadamente à tradução de “As oito elegias chinesas”, um conjunto de poemas da Dinastia Ming compilados por Long-Fong-Kong. Durante a Conferência sobre Literatura Chinesa que, segundo levantamento biográfico feito por Daniel Pires, teria sido proferida por Camilo Pessanha a 13 de março de 1915 e publicada oito dias depois no jornal macaense O Progresso, Pessanha analisa e caracteriza os seus próprios conhecimentos de língua chinesa, descrevendo-os da seguinte forma: “o intenso prazer espiritual que o seu estudo, por superficial que seja, dessa língua e dos seus monumentos proporciona a quem a ele se dedica, pelas belezas que encerra, pelas surpresas que causa e, principalmente, pelos vastos horizontes que entreabre ao espírito sobre a condição geral da humanidade e pela luz que projeta sobre o modo de ser das civilizações extintas” (Pessanha, 1992, p. 159). Nesta comunicação percorreremos com Pessanha uma rota lírica e linguística em busca de um entendimento maior entre duas civilizações.
Camilo Pessanha is widely considered one of the most important poets of modern Portugal. One of the characteristics that immediately stands out in his work is his contribution to Portuguese symbolist poetry. Another of the author’s particularities that set him apart from his peers is the fact that Camilo Pessanha lived in Macau and devoted himself to the study of the Chinese language and culture and was even referred to as “the most Chinese of Western poets, before Ezra Pound” (Sá Cunha, 1999, p. 34). This intercultural devotion led him to translate Chinese poetry, in particular the translation of “The Eight Chinese Ele- gies”, a collection of poems from the Ming Dynasty compiled by Long-Fong-Kong. During the Conference on Chinese Literature, which, according to a biographical survey conducted by Daniel Pires, was given by Camilo Pessanha on March 13, 1915 and published eight days later in the Macanese newspaper O Progresso, Pessanha analyses and characterizes his own knowledge of the Chinese language, describing it as follows: “the intense spiritual pleasure that the study, however superficial, of this language and its monuments provides to those who dedicate themselves to it, for the beauty it contains, the surprises it causes and, mainly, for the vast horizons it opens to the mind about the general condition of humanity and the light it sheds on the way of being of extinct civilizations.” (Pessanha, 1992, p. 159). In this talk, we will follow Pessanha on a lyrical and linguistic journey in search of a greater understanding between two civilizations.
