Abstract(s)
ferramentas digitais. Igualmente, estas instituições sofrem do fenómeno cost-disease, pois
Non-profit cultural institutions are not usually linked to technology, especially due to the uncommon relationship between performing arts and digital tools. Henceforth, this type of institutions suffer from cost-disease, since efficiencies enabled by technology adoption – with accumulated costs over the years - are not as significant in the cultural sector as in commercial or industrial sectors. Despite being non-profit organizations, they are increasingly forced to act as if they pursued profits, in order to maximize efficiencies and enabling more productivity and returns, as well as reaching a broader audience with quality programs, thus justifying the public grants received. With the development of electronic business (e-business), many organizations searched for solutions that would enable them to obtain not only strategic and financial advantages, but also more efficiencies in production, communication and distribution of products/services. However, adopting an e-business model requires significant investments and resources, two factors that are usually scarce in non-profit cultural institutions, making the adoption of e-business even more difficult. In this research we aim to understand the levels of adoption and impact of e-business among non-profit cultural institutions and which benefits we might expect. Using multiple case study, we analyze the data obtained from open interviews and questionnaires to different institutions in order to understand both benefits and difficulties inherent to electronic business in the cultural area, as well as to comprehend the strategies and reasons behind the adoption of this model.
