A presente investigação tem como objectivo analisar a história, o papel cultural e o legado dos antigos cinemas de “reprise” em Lisboa, nomeadamente o Cine Oriente, Cinema Popular, Cine Pátria, Royal Cine, Paris Cinema e Cinema Pathé. Estes espaços relevantes para a vida social e cultural da cidade ao longo do século XX, desempenharam funções centrais na construção da identidade cultural urbana, ao proporcionar momentos de fruição colectiva e acesso democrático ao cinema. Contudo, a conjugação de transformações tecnológicas, urbanísticas e sociais conduziu progressivamente ao seu declínio e encerramento, resultando numa perda significativa para a memória cultural lisboeta.
Este estudo justifica-se pela necessidade de resgatar a importância histórica destes cinemas e de reflectir sobre os mecanismos de preservação da sua memória num contexto de crescente desvalorização do património imaterial. Para tal, a metodologia adoptada organiza-se em três eixos: revisão histórica, recorrendo ao levantamento e análise documental em arquivos e bibliotecas; estudo das causas do desaparecimento destes espaços, considerando factores sociais, económicos e culturais; e análise de possíveis estratégias de salvaguarda patrimonial, com particular atenção às oportunidades de preservação digital e colaborativa.
Os resultados esperados passam por uma compreensão mais aprofundada sobre o papel destes cinemas na vida cultural de Lisboa e pelo desenvolvimento de propostas inovadoras de preservação, capazes de manter vivas as memórias colectivas associadas a estes espaços. Desta forma, a investigação pretende contribuir para o debate sobre o património cultural urbano e as práticas de salvaguarda da memória no século XXI.
This research aims to analyze the history, cultural role and legacy of Lisbon’s reprise cinemas, focusing on Cine Oriente, Cinema Popular, Cine Pátria, Royal Cine, Paris Cinema and Cinema Pathé. These venues, highly significant for the city’s social and cultural life throughout the twentieth century, played a central role in shaping urban cultural identity by providing collective experiences and promoting democratic access to cinema. However, the combined effects of technological, urban and social transformations gradually led to their decline and eventual closure, resulting in a substantial loss for Lisbon’s cultural memory. This study is justified by the need to recover the historical importance of these cinemas and to reflect on mechanisms for preserving their memory in a context of growing undervaluation of intangible heritage. The adopted methodology is structured around three axes: a historical review based on archival and bibliographic research; an examination of the reasons underlying the disappearance of these venues, considering social, economic and cultural factors; and an analysis of potential strategies for heritage safeguarding, focusing on the opportunities for digital and collaborative preservation. The expected outcomes include a deeper understanding of the role these cinemas played in Lisbon’s cultural life, as well as the development of innovative preservation proposals capable of sustaining the collective memories associated with these spaces. This research seeks to contribute to the broader debate on urban cultural heritage and contemporary practices of memory safeguarding in the twenty-first century.
