Abstract(s)
individual e social do homem.
The motivation for this study is an attempt to answer some questions related to the relevance of the word ‘hand’ in the Portuguese language under the framework of Cognitive Linguistics. From that perspective, the mind is embodied, and the meaning of the words is the result of the hypothesis of the embodied meaning. Therefore the meaning of some words and expressions relates to some parts of the human body, like eyes, head, foot, hands, and so on. These parts are reason for the figurative, which contributes to the language’s enrichment and mirrors the human individual and social experience. To reach the purpose of our study, we propose to analyse and discuss the data from four dictionaries (cf. Dicionários), and then from the journalistic online sources (the website Linguateca) that use the word ‘hand’ as a part of everyday language. The data collected is the starting point for the construction of global networks of meaning for each one of the proposals. The comparison of the two proposals will lead us to the final conclusions. It is crucial for our study to analyse mechanisms that generates polysemy, as specification, generalization, metonymy and metaphor, considering that they do not only represent the way we express ourselves through language, but also the way human beings conceptualize the world.
