Abstract(s)
In various environments, times and contexts, and especially within the family, ties of solidarity and identíty are built, relationships are constructed, privileged kinship and competences are formed. Practices, forms of solidarity, moral and educational values, social and cultural rights are transmitted. The gene-rations are carriers of collective and family memories, discourses and representa-tions, taking part in the transmíssion of values, and in the construction of new identities, as well as of individual and group trajectories. Among the relations and practices of intergenerational family solidarity, particular emphasis will be given to the relationship between grandparents and grand-children. The grandparents are sources of emotional and educational support, for both, the grandchildren and the parents, and have been playing this role in varied ways. With regards to the use of image, we analyze the film Grands-Parents et Petits-Enfants - Le renouveau du Printemps (Ramos, 1995), which highlights the ímportance of grandparents in the intergenerational family relationships, parti-cularly in the education and transmission of intergenerational culture and memory, as well as the quality of the affective, relational and communicational ties between the younger and older generatíons. The involvement of the grandparents in childcare, education and socialization are fundamental features in the develop-ment of not only the children's well-being and their quality of life but also the adulfs, contributing to the promotion of new forms of intergenerational relations and solidarity. Portuguese culture and law recognizes the Ímportance of grandparents and in Portugal, as in other countries, International Day of the Grandparents is recognized and celebrated on the 26 July.
