Abstract(s)
Como alcançar um desempenho superior tem sido uma preocupação de muitos
pesquisadores de gestão estratégica. Na maioria dos casos, os estudiosos investigam a
influência dos recursos, do conhecimento e das capacidades dinâmicas per se na
vantagem competitiva. Esta tese argumenta que existe um construto mediador – a
alostasia – que congrega os diferentes construtos mencionados, mais o treino,
permitindo à organização “mudar através da estabilidade” em direcção a um
desempenho superior.
Na sequência de trabalhos sobre recursos, conhecimento, capacidades dinâmicas, e da
literatura específica sobre fisiologia, treino desportivo e desempenho, esta tese avalia
um modelo baseado na alostasia e no desempenho. O modelo postula o efeito da
alostasia do qual salienta-se a aprendizagem e treino na renovação dos recursos,
capacidades dinâmicas com consequências no desempenho da organização. O
desenvolvimento do modelo de pesquisa incluiu as definições teóricas e operacionais
dos constructos, um método apropriado de identificação e recolha de dados, o design
da amostra, e todas as fases inerentes a um estudo confirmatório. Para testar o
modelo, os dados foram recolhidos a partir de uma amostra cross-sectional de 477
inquiridos ligados à gestão das organizações desportivas. As ferramentas descritivas e
analíticas – modelagem de equações estruturais / SEM – foram utilizadas para testar a
medição e o modelo estrutural.
Os resultados da investigação revelam: i) a relação entre recursos e capacidades
dinâmicas; ii) a relação entre recursos e conhecimento e treino; iii) a relação entre
conhecimento e treino e capacidades dinâmicas; iv) a influência do conhecimento e
treino sobre a alostasia; v) a influência das capacidades dinâmicas sobre a alostasia; vi)
a influência da alostasia no desempenho.
A principal contribuição desta investigação consiste em avaliar ”a mudança através da
estabilidade” ou alostasia constituído por diferentes factores interligados e a sua
eficácia para o desempenho superior. Os gestores podem beneficiar dos resultados
deste trabalho para a tomada de decisão acerca de como mudar e preparar a
organização em mercados turbulentos e voláteis, assim como compreender melhor o
efeito da utilização sistemática da aprendizagem e treino na cadeia de valor da
organização.
How to achieve superior performance has been a concern of many researchers of Strategic Management. In most cases, scholars investigate the influence of resources, knowledge and dynamic capabilities per se on competitive advantage. This thesis follows an alternative direction and argues that there is a mediating construct - the allostasis - which brings together the fusion of the constructs mentioned above, allowing the organization to " maintain stability through change" towards superior performance. Following work on resources, knowledge, dynamic capabilities, and based on the literature on physiology, athletic training and performance, this thesis proposes and empirically tests a model based on the constructs mentioned and performance. The proposed model postulates the effect of allostasis and the importance of learning and training in the renewal of resources, dynamic capabilities and consequent changes in organizational performance. The development of the research model followed a research project that included theoretical and operational definitions of the constructs, an appropriate method to identify and collect data, the design of the representative sample, and all phases inherent in a confirmatory study. To test the model, data were collected from a cross-sectional sample of 477 respondents linked to the management of sports organizations. The descriptive and analytical tools - structural equation modeling / SEM - were used to test the measurement and structural model. The results show the model developed: i) the relationship between resources and dynamic capabilities, ii) the relationship between resources and learning and training; iii) the relationship between learning and training and dynamic capabilities iv) the influence of learning and training on allostasis v) the influence of dynamic capabilities on allostasis; vi) the influence of allostasis on performance. The main contribution of this PhD thesis is to fill a gap in research through the development and empirical testing of a complex model that includes both the antecedent factors that build the effectiveness of allostasis as well as the effect of this on the performance. Managers can benefit from the results of this work in terms of contribution to the decision making about how to change and prepare the organization in turbulent and volatile markets, as well as on the systematic use of learning and training in the value chain of the organization.
